Just about every major city in the US will be under a 2-3 week quarantine by months end. Watch.

Not that I'm ok with it, but....srs question: what the fk is the alternative to stopping the spread when you don't know you have it for 1-2 weeks and people are too god damn dumb to just cancel things on their own and stay home?

Edit: LMAO @ the cope of downplaying this virus with some of you.

Kinda seems like UBC isn't registration kind of thing.

I guess the soft word now is "containment center"?

More government boots on the ground just opens up a can of worms. We already saw waht they'll do in Louisiana after Katrina.

New Rochelle. That's a huge cluster for this early. I wonder what the relation between the people is

We need summer weather sooner rather than later. Schools hit spring break and go online heavy after that and we mostly cancel large gatherings and there is some financial hardship from lack of spending/travel/going out plus the market until summer hits, then we can facepalm about the idiocy that is election runup.

Most likely.

Yea, apparently right now, their definition of containment is closing all schools and large, non-essential businesses, and gathering places for 2 weeks. But they're rather skimpy on the finer details of what is frowned upon and what will be acted upon.

The only way to stop it dead is martial law for 3 weeks and no travel into or out of the country. Anything beyond that and it's just going to have to work it's way through the population because you're not stopping it otherwise. And does it really make sense to do that based on 80% of cases being mild or even asymptomatic?

This may not be "just the flu"--but it's not freaking Ebola either.

This. Doctor friend basically said it's a bad upper respiratory infection. If youre not afraid/afraid of the flu then you should feel the same about this.

The real problem is it spreads fast and could flood hospitals with patients and people will die because of overcrowding and not getting care. And those will be people with already poor health conditions.

This isn't the fukking walking dead lite here and it's being treated like it.

There's more and more info coming from other countries that this is kicking younger people's asses and causing more deaths than what was originally being thrown out.

We have had almost no testing at all since the first cases so the numbers being reported are absolutely not accurate to what the real infection numbers are. Hopefully by weeks end we will have a better idea. I suspect we will be in the thousands by then "officially". I personally believe we're already in the thousands. It has been here for way too long with too many people unknowingly spreading it IMO.
Doctors were denying people tests because they didn't have the perfect symptoms. Many of them were later found to be positive. Many places STILL don't have test kits. The entire thing is a nightmare.
I'd wager all the deaths (in the US) are reported, and I agree infections are largely underreported. So 28 out of thousands.
I'm so scared. Like, literally shaking. /s

I mean, just take normal precautions. Just LOL if it takes a flu+ scare to make you wash your hands.

Lmao, more downplaying.

Ebola is extremely deadly, yes. But it's alsoextremelyeasy to contain and put a stop to fast compared to the flu, which is airborne. Ebola requires direct physical contact with bodily fluids of someone infected.
COVID-19 would have been done and a thing of the past in January if it was anything like Ebola.

I'm really not trying to be argumentative with you, but you make it hard. Deaths fromcurrent caseswon't be happening for another week or two... It takes about 2 weeks after symptoms for you to either gtf over it or die. Just lmao at assuming the death rate reported as I type this is all there will be knowing there's thousands more, just not official.
You can't downplay 3-4 out of 100 people dying. Period. Especially now that there's info coming from other places besides the lying fukers in China saying that this virus is indeed kicking young people's asses and killing them at a higher rate than first thought too.

The other end of things some of you can't wrap your minds around for some reason: What happens when already busy hospitals are flooded with COVID-19 patients? Doctors and nurses will inevitably get sick too. People already hospitalized or future hospitalizations from non COVID-19 emergencies will begin to not get the attention needed slowly, but surely - which will also lead to more deaths as a byproduct of the virus.

Some of you can't wrap your mind around the big picture.

Like I said . . . the only way to clamp this down 100% and do it fast to absolutely avoid the above worst-case scenario is martial law. So, do that then? It would 100% work. Might be one or two downsides to that approach, but what the heck.

EDIT: Of course, you need a few million solderis to do that and they'd probably get it, too. Then you have the irony of the hospitals being filled with soldiers and LEO who were supposed to keep people confined to prevent them filling up the hospitals.

Wouldn't have to be so extreme if flights in and out of China were stopped several weeks prior like they should have been.
Mandatory 2 week quarantine for anyone coming off of a cruise.
We should have been ready to test anyone with cold and flu symptoms weeks sooner than we were.
The situation playing out right now for us would be much, much different. Gov't fuked around on this for so long that now extreme lock downs are basically all that can be done to stop further spread.

I don't believe 3-4 out of 100 are dying. How do you get accurate numbers if you can have it and not show symptoms? How many show symptoms and get over it and don't ever identify it as flu+? The panic is based on too many unknowns. Doctors and nurses are regularly in close proximity to sick persons with a wide range of illness. They wear PPE and take other precautions, so how is this different?

Company I work for cancelled all unnecessary travel as of last week. We have operations in about 20 states and a dozen countries, so I think that's appropriate. They're also questioning visitors (any non-employees) of their travel history at the security gate.
I'm calling out sick the rest of the week, but only because I don't feel like going to work.

Yes, I have been keeping up and I'm open to sources. What are these alarming rates, exactly?

This is from 7 hours ago . . . I don't see anything in there about a sudden and startling increase in youth deaths. Is there some source you have that says this? Below they point to Italy having a particularly aged population as the cause of so many more deaths which jives with what has been said up to now that the elderly are ht hardest hit.

https://www.livescience.com/why-ital...s-so-high.html

Deaths from the new coronavirus in Italy have soared in recent days, with the country reporting 463 total fatalities from the virus, out of 9,172 confirmed cases, as of Monday (March 9). But why are deaths in the country so high?

Outside of mainland China, Italy now has the highest number of deaths in the world from COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. And the country's fatality rate from COVID-19 — at 5% — is much higher than the global average of 3.4%, according to the World Health Organization.

One factor affecting the country's death rate may be the age of its population — Italy has the oldest population in Europe, with about 23% of residents 65 or older, according to The New York Times. The median age in the country is 47.3, compared with 38.3 in the United States, the Times reported. Many of Italy's deaths have been among people in their 80s, and 90s, a population known to be more susceptible to severe complications from COVID-19, according to The Local.

This is from 4 hours ago.

One of the few mercies of the spreading coronavirus is that it leaves young children virtually untouched — a mystery virologists say may hold vital clues as to how the virus works.

In China, only 2.4 percent of reported cases were children and only 0.2 percent of reported cases were children who got critically ill, according to the World Health Organization. China has reported no case of a young child dying of the disease covid-19.

Meanwhile, the new coronavirus has proved especially deadly on the other end of the age spectrum. The fatality rate in China for those over 80 is an estimated 21.9 percent, per the WHO. For ages 10 to 39, however, the fatality rate is roughly 0.2 percent, according to a separate study drawing on patient records of 44,672 confirmed cases. And fatalities and severe symptoms are almost nonexistent at even younger ages.

Previous coronavirus outbreaks have also mysteriously spared the young. No children died during the SARS outbreak in 2002, which killed 774 people. And few children developed symptoms from the deadly MERS coronavirus, which has killed 858 since 2012.

So whole world is lying about their death rates?

Uhh....because it's a strand of flu that no one on the planet has ever been exposed to which means you will essentially guaranteed contract it if you come into contact with it.

Ok . . . so then we have three basic options and I'll let you guess which one is most realistic.

(1) Invent a time machine and go back to January and stop all travel into the US from any source and destination (you can't just exclude from China). This includes military complete embargo of the northern and southern borders and ports.

(2) Martial Law and lock down the populace for 3 weeks.

(3) Wash your hands a lot, reduce unneeded travel and interaction in large groups, quarantine yourself if sick or you think you're exposed and ride it out.

The the in between can reduce the rate at which people contact it and become infected so that the health system can handle it

You don't want everybody to get it all at once

This is exactly what Fauci was saying originally. As fast as it spreads, what the symptoms actually are/range from, and that no one is really testing much, you could have *significantly* more people infected/managing it than you realize. Therefore that (2-3)/100 could be (2-3)/1000 or (2-3)/10000. Remember, it's actually a SARS related virus, but magically you aren't hearing that anywhere because then people wouldn't panic....

It's the flipside that isn't getting reported by the media when you go looking. He wrote an article for the new England journal of medicine about it. When i went looking, you could only find the negative sides of his articles.

Ill take my tinfoil hat off now.

All fantastic on paper
Wash your hands a lot- Wonder if any other places in the world tried this?
reduce unneeded travel and interaction in large groups- Most humans are way too dumb to do that and insist on continuing to live their lives like normal. Most are convinced it's just the flu bro.
quarantine yourself if sick or you think you're exposed and ride it out- That's great and all, but by the time you're symptomatic, you've already infected unknown amounts of people. Riding it out (as already discussed on previous page) is ok...until it isn't. The virus can go from mild cold symptoms to ICU and on a ventilator in 24 hours.

I'm just the panic dude in the group though brahs. Do your thing and keep convincing yourselves that what's happening everywhere else in the world isn't going to happen here because somehow we're more special than the other countries that have it.
