Just playing devils advocate here, but...

If someone is able to hit you more than a couple of times in the plates, then most likely you're going to continue getting hit over and over and over in the plates, and other unprotected areas, until you're dead. It's not like someone that has you lined up in their sights to where they can hit you multiple times is just going to land all hits in the exact same spot on the same plate or only shoot like 2 rounds at you, they're gonna be blasting away hitting you like 10+ times before you realize what's happening. Many of those hits will probably be in your guts or other extremities. So having plates that can take more than the few that ceramic can take in the same area I think isn't necessary. But then I'm just a jack ass so what do I know

If you are in a gunfight standing still enough to be hit multiple times in the same spot on your plate...you already done goofed.

Again, there is a reason the mil uses ceramic plates and not steel

Less getting hit multiple times in one shoot out, and more (also playing Devils advocate) getting hit in one shoot out, then later another, later another.. ect.

If SHTF I doubt replacing a ceramic plate would be an option, so longevity is what I'd prefer.

That shouldn't be a concern either. Ceramic plates are multi hit rated. Besides, do youreallythink you're going to get shot, by a rifle (but not one that defeats your plate), in the plate (but nowhere else), inmultipleshootouts?

I can bank on my luck, usually works out for me. Short of legit AP or incendiary rounds there really isn't much that people will realistically be using that would defeat III plates.

Hate to break it to you, standard m193 55gr at velocities above 2800fps will punch clean through AR500 III plates like a hot knife through butter. Speed kills.

I had the misconception that ceramic somehow just stopped bullets on the surface.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but ceramic is a "one and done" type armor. Once the surface, and the interior of the armor is compromised (by a bullet), it's has to be replaced? I'm looking at ceramic plates as well, I just want to know what's out there.

They certainly take damage when they stop a bullet, moreso than a good stop by steel, but they are not one and done. They are multi hit rated. Even "III+" ceramic plates that weigh 5 lbs or under are rated for several hits from M193, M855, API x39, or M80 and good ones test for 4-6 hits easy.

And let's face it, if somebody is shooting at you with a rifle and they hit you more than 4-5 times in a 10"x12" plate, they're probably hitting you somewhere else too, and getting shot by a rifle in SHTF is pretty much you're fuked not "I hope I can take 5 more shots from a rifle into the plate tomorrow when I get into another gunfight"

Take it seriously, if not for yourself, for others, so that everybody who will need high level care when they get it, doesn't get it all at the same time.

I haven't watched a damn thing from the mainstream media about this, or anything. Don't have cable, don't watch live TV, don't go to the mainstream websites except by direct link to specific article sometimes if somebody points me there. Don't have a clue WTF POTUS has said or not about it But I've been all over this for a bit.

Take it seriously.

This is not a nothing will happen.

It may not be a huge deal, and it may slink away without getting ugly. Hopefully it does. Maybe even probably it does. But it's not nothing, it's not "just the flu" and it's not "Just wash your hands [while doing nothing else differently]"

It's time everybody start voluntarily limiting their exposure wherever possible. No kids in public parks and playgrounds, wandering around the mall aimlessly, extra curricular school gatherings, going on a cruise, taking the kids to visit great grandma in the nursing home...limit exposure, limit transmission, not just soyoudon't get sick, but to slow the rate that other people get exposed and get sick because there are plenty of people out there for whom this could be very serious and the more who get it at once, the more likely we are to come short of the available care when they need it. Even if you are asymptomatic or get mild regular cold symptoms, if you expose yourself and go about your business as usual, you're going to expose others, and that's the problem.'

And yes wash and sanitize your hands compulsively, don't touch your face with unwashed hands if you're not at home, don't go out if you're coughing or sneezing, etc

You're behind the curve.

You need to stay home and keep the kid home and have your wife basically decon herself every time she comes home and watch herself like a hawk for any symptoms because you're the target

Right now I am "in" to a 50 count box of N95 surgical masks that I put on the shelf literally during the swine flu pandemic (or right after, not sure, the box has a 2010 date but not sure if manufacture date or some kind of expiration date or what). The media has done such a good job on the sheep though that I'd probably be looked at as evil if I wore one of my literally a decade old masks in public because how dare I have a mask when there are shortages for healthcare professionals now

YOUNG AND UNAFRAID OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC? GOOD FOR YOU. NOW STOP KILLING PEOPLE | OPINION

I'm a doctor in a major hospital in Western Europe. Watching you Americans (and you, Brits) in these still-early days of the coronavirus pandemic is like watching a familiar horror movie, where the protagonists, yet again, split into pairs or decide to take a tour of a dark basement.

The real-life versions of this behavior are pretending this is just a flu; keeping schools open; following through with your holiday travel plans, and going into the office daily. This is what we did in Italy. We were so complacent that even when people with coronavirus symptoms started turning up, we wrote each off as a nasty case of the flu. We kept the economy going, pointed fingers at China and urged tourists to keep traveling. And the majority of us told ourselves and each other: this isn't so bad. We're young, we're fit, we'll be fine even if we catch it.

Fast-forward two months, and we are drowning. Statistically speaking—judging by the curve in China—we are not even at the peak yet, but our fatality rate is at over 6 percent, double the known global average.

Put aside statistics. Here is how it looks in practice. Most of my childhood friends are now doctors working in north Italy. In Milan, in Bergamo, in Padua, they are having to choose between intubating a 40-year-old with two kids, a 40-year old who is fit and healthy with no co-morbidities, and a 60-year-old with high blood pressure, because they don't have enough beds. In the hallway, meanwhile, there are another 15 people waiting who are already hardly breathing and need oxygen.

The army is trying to bring some of them to other regions with helicopters but it's not enough: the flow is just too much, too many people are getting sick at the same time.

We are still awaiting the peak of the epidemic in Europe: probably early April for Italy, mid-April for Germany and Switzerland, somewhere around that time for the UK. In the U.S., the infection has only just begun.

But until we're past the peak, the only solution is to impose social restrictions.

And if your government is hesitating, these restrictions are up to you. Stay put. Do not travel. Cancel that family reunion, the promotion party and the big night out. This really sucks, but these are special times. Don't take risks. Do not go to places where you are more than 20 people in the same room. It's not safe and it's not worth it.

Here's why:Fatality is the wrong yardstick. Catching the virus can mess up your life in many, many more ways than just straight-up killing you. "We are all young"—okay. "Even if we get the bug, we will survive"—fantastic. How about needing four months of physical therapy before you even feel human again. Or getting scar tissue in your lungs and having your activity level restricted for the rest of your life. Not to mention having every chance of catching another bug in hospital, while you're being treated or waiting to get checked with an immune system distracted even by the false alarm of an ordinary flu. No travel for leisure or business is worth this risk.

Now, odds are, you might catch coronavirus and might not even get symptoms. Great. Good for you. Very bad for everyone else
, from your own grandparents to the random older person who got on the subway train a stop or two after you got off. You're fine, you're barely even sneezing or coughing, but you're walking around and you kill a couple of old ladies without even knowing it. Is that fair? You tell me.

My personal as well as professional view: we all have a duty to stay put, except for very special reasons, like, you go to work because you work in healthcare, or you have to save a life and bring someone to hospital, or go out to shop for food so you can survive. But when we get to this stage of a pandemic, it's really important not to spread the bug. The only thing that helps is social restriction. Ideally, the government should issue that instruction and provide a financial fallback—compensate business owners, ease the financial load on everyone as much as possible and reduce the incentive of risking your life or the lives of others just to make ends meet. But if your government or company is slow on the uptake, don't be that person. Take responsibility. For all but essential movement, restrict yourself.

This is epidemiology 101. It really sucks. It is extreme—but luckily, we don't have pandemics of this violence every year. So sit it out. Stay put. Don't travel. It is absolutely not worth it.

It's the civic and moral duty of every person, everywhere, to take part in the global effort to reduce this threat to humanity. To postpone any movement or travel that are not vitally essential, and to spread the disease as little as possible. Have your fun in June, July and August when this—hopefully—is over. Stay safe. Good luck.

If SHTF I doubt replacing a ceramic plate would be an option, so longevity is what I'd prefer.
Steel plates are for poor LARPers who only wear their plates for 5 minute intervals in the living room.

These are pretty good, and the price is very good.

Masks are the one thing I did not have . . . wish I would have jumped on that way back.

I did manage to find some online late last night on a random search. Ordered 2 boxes of 10 each (wanted to have "some" if legit and not be hosed if not or they didn't ship for a long time). Will see if that comes through. Seems all legit and they claimed in stock . . . and I already got a shipping notification. But we all know what that can mean.

Well, hoping they don't get more than a 2 consecutive hits. Mitigating damage of bullet holes is the idea. The chances of surviving 1 single hit to the chest with a plate greatly increases than a single shot to the chest without a plate.

In the scenarios I play in my head, I'm breaking contact in any prolonged fire fight that lasts more than 10 rounds. Quicker if I get hit once, regardless of placement on my body. I'll take the gamble covering 10% of my body with armor than 0% coverage.

In SHTF scenarios, I'm playing ambush, not the other way around. Reduce contact or even awareness to anyone outside my trust.

I'm just wondering the durability of plates when the supply is only what I have on hand.

Never heard of that seller, are they GTG and if so how's the shipping speed?

Interesting. I bought another couple boxes Jan 21st (checked order history to verify) and awhile later when I looked again they were allllll gone absolutely everywhere well before hand sanitizer even

I think the short version is, if you take one hit from a rated threat in the ceramic plate, it will be fine to keep using and should work the next time too. And if you plan on being able to pick your fights, and you take a round in the front plate, flip it with the rear plate later? Seriously.
