I didn't like Isaacson's DaVinci. I only got through about half of it. Never read either Isaacson's Franklin treatment, nor Ben's autobiography. I'm sure both are terrific.

On Economics:The Worldly Philosophersby Heilbroner is a great, quick history of the great economic theories over the past 400 years or so.

On Philosophy:The History of Western Philosophyby Russell. It's a big book, but each chapter is manageable. It has its flaws, but it covers what is the basis of much of our society (in the Occidental world, at least) today.

Reader/Self improver checking in on thread(highlighter crew and uses pen to correlate with what other authors said on the topic) reps coming OP's way, gonna check out the books he recommended, and advice for OP that he already knows...Anybody that's not fcuking with the idea of self improving via reading, just let them rock back and forth in their straightjacket.

Saw a cracked.com article about reading which made sense, they explained that reading was fun at first to alot of us via bookfairs but around high school and onward, reading got wack because we were reading chit that we didn't really like. We were reading it just to pass and around college it's the same recipe to where when you're out of school, the last thing anybody wants to do is open a book...They'll open up 20 tall cans of beer costing them 60 bucks/month before reading why about quitting beer for good for less than 15 bucks one time.

OP of the plethora of books you've read across your time, what percentage would you say have actually been worth the time of reading? I'm finding the pool of nonfiction books increasingly diluted by rubbish as the years go by. The quality of editing and proofing is also dropping, seems like every 2nd book is full of basic spelling and grammar errors nowadays.


Wood recommend Steve McQueen's biography for an interesting read. Also for important general knowledge, imo Dressing The Man by Alan Flusser. Anyone who's going to wear a suit at some point in their life needs an authoritative understanding of how tailored clothes should fit correctly.
