We are a super power because we don't do things like let vital sectors of our economy collapse while we have the wherewithal to do something about it. Especially when it is some act of nature out of everyone's control.

There are other countries that do that. Maybe you'd be more comfortable and happy living somewhere else.

Except for that:

The four biggest U.S. carriers — Delta, American, Southwest and United — have collectively spent about $39 billion over the last five years buying back shares.

I agree with this. Yes, it will cause massive pain and damge short term, but new companies will rise to take the olds place. Making bailouts (for any industry) the norm is a bad bad idea, especially the fuking BANKS. Yes still mad from 08, bailing out some of the most greedy evil coksuckers on the entire planet

Just under what is cost to operate Delta in 2019. Amazing. I wonder what the logistics looks like for allocating 40billion over 12 months and actually making a profit. Probably much more complex than this thread.

Try again.

Airlines are a low-margin business, not that far away from grocery stores (1%). Getting shut down for 2 months with 0 income and tens of billions in capital sitting idle will kill them.

If you want to fly a plane AFTER this all blows over, it's going to require a 9/11-ish stimulus.
This. Too many people who listen to everything the media says and don't do their own research in this thread. Airline industry is an extremely difficult and capital intensive business. Margins are crazy low and extremely prone to recessions. Should they have held more cash on the balance sheets? Probably. But guys, they don't have the free cash flow (even if they didn't return it to shareholders or buy back shares) to withstand almost NO REVENUE for an indefinite period of time.

Airlines are extremely low margin, lots of airlines operate at a loss. In my opinion tickets are relatively cheap...People who are saying that they should have cash reserves on hand to pay for this know nothing about banking or finance. These companies have such high operating costs there would be no way to sustain that. They need to be financed right now and just so you know...in 08 General Motors and BOA paid back their federal bailout money with interest! Its not a gift its a loan

If you think Starbucks and airlines have similar overhead expenses or provide anything even remotely similar as a necessity, you're in no position to have any opinion on this scenario.

Timmy and Joan are here acting like retards building up a 6 month emergency fund in case there's a crisis. "Better safe then sorry."

Meanwhile our Soviet leaders dump cash on whatever degenerate industry struggles during the recessions that come around once a decade.

answer the question: which privately held companies do you bail out and which do you not? because a lot of them do provide necessary goods and services to the general public, arguably much more so than airlines..

You already admitted that you don't know what you are talking about. This is just prattle out of you now.

Give you a break? Your in a thread dumping on other people (that operate airlines) because they said they need s break. You voluntarily came in here. You're not entitled to a ****ing break, bro.

Not saying they should be bankrupt, but shareholders and bondholders should get crushed. They are risk assets not guaranteed to go up by government. Those companies have been buying back stock constantly and giving amazing bonuses to their leaders.

No, there will be a sale of unused planes to new owners who will respond to market demand when people want to fly.

Let them fail. There will always be demand for air travel and maybe the next airlines will operate like businesses instead of trust fund children.

Easy solution:

UPS and Fedex shuttling service.

They put you in a box and ship you to your destination via truck.

Everyone in cardboard = not touching each other.
