You don't need a chest rig to carry a mag or two. Unless you're planning on getting in a protracted firefight, a chest rig is an unnecessary number of mags to be carrying around. Try a pocket.

Waited about 2.5 hours trying to pickup my gun from the OP today, the background checks were going really slow then the system stopped working so wasn't able to pick it up.

By the way, something you probably want is a sling.

Magpul MS4, Blue Force Gear, Vickers, hopefully some others chime in

Update: went in again today, had about a 1.5 hrs worth of people in front of me and the background check website went down again with only 3 people in front of me. Ended up sticking around for a little over 2 hours after it went down but it was down the whole time.

The guys working behind the counter said it's been happening since last week, the system will be up and running for a few hours then it gets overloaded and they're down until the next day. I'm going to try and get there before they open on Tuesday morning so I'm one of the first they process and hopefully get the background check done. Already spent about 6 hours just trying to get a background check done, so frustrating.

It depends on what a person is preparing for. For home defense and common scenarios, then no a chest rig is not needed and is more of a problem than a solution.

If a person wants to be prepared for potential militia service, community security in SHTF breakdown of law and order, however rare those things might be, then either a chest rig or plate carrier are a good idea. It certainly should not come before other more basic stuff like ammo, mags, sling/light/optic, etc though.

bingo

I bought the Magpul MS4 for my 18" SPR rifle and the Blue Force Gear Vickers unpadded for my 12.5" pistol because I wanted to try both and see which I like better.

Both are certainly usable and somewhat similar in a few respects but I much prefer the pull tab of the BFG over the plastic grabber of the Magpul. It's easier and quicker and more intuitive to grab the tab of the BFG than the Magpul plastic slider - but the Magpul isn't bad or anything if someone still wants that one.

Anymore slings I buy will be BFG Vickers. 'This message brought to you by Blue Force Gear lol.'

I'm also using Magpul QD anchors because I trust them to not let go under stress. I'm also using a Magpul MLOK QD mount for the rail, on the rear end of the left side of rail

With the MS4 I ended up taking the single point attachment extra part off because it was extra crap I didn't need and wasn't gonna use, in effect making it a MS1 sling. Unless someone is really sure they're gonna be using it in single point mode, then just get the MS1 to use 2 point only - if they want to go with a Magpul sling

Lights

What are your favorite lights?

I went with the Streamlight HLX with an Arisaka mlok mount. It's a very popular combination. I've got both rechargeable 81650(Surefire USB rechargeable) and regular CR123's(Streamlight) for it.

Streamlight Pro Tac Railmount. Pick one. The HLX is the brighest but the bezel is so wide it won't work with all mounts and all rails. If you aren't sure your exact combination will clear, get the model 1 or 2. The main advantage of the model 1 is it will run on a CR123 or a AA. You need 2 CR123 for the other two.

The nuke it from orbit option is a Cloud Defensive Optimized Weapon Light (OWL), it's heavy but it has great throw (beam distance) and is built stronger than anything else on the market. It's an absolute fukin unit (and weighs like it). Even has a pressure switch without the frailty of a wire running in between. Installs and uninstalls with no tools (tool is built into the tailcap). Reversible/ambidextrous. Stock levels and quick shipping might be its downfall and it also requires 18650 battery but it comes with two of them and a charger. $$$

The Inforce WML are pretty good too. They had some battery self drain problems early on that made my shy away from them (once bitten, twice shy) but reportedly they've been good now and I have one of the early ones from when they had drain problems, and it's good (like, I've left the same battery in it for 2 years in the safe and it's still as bright as ever). They aren't too expensive and have many of the OWL benefits in that they are really simple, no wires, just clamp it on and the momentary button is built in and pretty easy to use. Have to put it over on the side though so ambi use isn't as good as a pressure switch on the top

FTR I have and use all of the above lights I just mentioned, including all three of the Railmounts.

Edit: If your setup allows don't be afraid to just throw a Streamlight TLR-1 HL on it

Fark. I didn't get an AR but so glad I got my 9mm a couple weeks ago and my cheap Chinese shotgun last weekend (because when will we ever be able to get anything cheap/Chinese ever again?). I have some ammo on order but feel like I'm gonna have to stay on top of it to get any sort of minimal stockpile to at least stay a bit ahead of the curve.

I wouldn't expect to get any kind of a 'stockpile' until 2021, and then only if Trump wins.

I wouldn't expect to get any kind of a 'stockpile' until 2021, and then only if Trump wins.

Dry Fire. It will be your friend.
This. The previous, I don't know, 8 (?) threads I made along this theme were the time to buy, especially ammo. Right now 9mm is TIGHT. We're going to see brass 9mm prices going over 25cpr for case quantities. 5.56 is already consistently over $375/case for anything that is actually in-stock.

You can backorder at lower prices but you won't be getting that anytime soon. I don't know that I'd be depending on a cheap Chinese shotgun...
