I started posting here when I was stationed in Japan. Can confirm that place is awesome. Never had any blatant racism directed towards me. If anything its the older people just not liking Americans period.
You commit to learning the language and they will embrace you with arms wide open. The only downside I see there is that they literally work themselves to death and its expensive as hell. If you plan on dating there you should have no issue finding an attractive woman.

Best place I have ever been and would move back there in a heartbeat if I had an alternate life.

Not always but most of the times, people see themselves in others like a reflection in the mirror. I truly believe what you saw in those people you spent time with were exactly what they saw in you.

I follow 'black youtube', and it's pretty common to see people who have either moved to a country in Africa or have moved to Brazil (in case you don't know, 51% of the population of Brazil openly identifies as part black or black, despite what you see in the media).

I also see a lot of black dudes, who talk about dating black women (and I'm not talking about the self hating black men, who talk chit about black women constantly).

In the US white and East Asian women seem to be the ideal women, so it's not surprising to see black dudes gravitating towards them too. Here in the UK East Asian women are not held up like they are in the US, so it's rare to hear any black dudes talk about liking East Or South East Asian women.

Also, the primarily white woman dating or chasing black men tend to have bigger youtube channels.

Well, this thread did evolve, from a very naive sounding OP to something more realistic (thanks Kaz).

One tip I'd give to anyone going there is tonotthink that Japan is some 'manga, anime, hot chicks, ramen' fest. Japan has an ancient history and a very distinct culture when compared (because of the OP) with what the average American thinks of the place. And, like with any distinct culture, trying to learn the local language and making an effort to understand the history and culture are extremely important unless you want to live in an expat bubble.

And those expat bubbles are often vilified by local populations for good reason - drunken stooges on 'vacation' (or deployment) thinking they will be treated like celebrities.

On the 'work' comments - it is 'work hard, play hard'. Some banking friends of mine were a bit taken aback as to how often there'd be some 'after work' social gatherings.

What I'm trying to say is 'be respectful of what you find', rather than going there with the preconceived notions like the ones in the OP.

i think white people can get away with the not giving a **** about the culture. had a coworker who worked in japan for a big company and he said the white people were pretty much excused or given the "well whatever" from any strict cultural or social etiquette while the asian people were pretty much on lock down if they ****ed up. country is a white worshipping nation. think even black people could get away with it. one of the disgusting things about japan is the treatment of foreign asians vs white or black people. it's like "ur asian" then a white person comes along "wow a white person!"that is sort of the same thing with white people with yellow fever. ****in weird to me. i feel like non-asians with yellow fever are closet ****philes

As far as the workaholic myth goes, the Japanese are definitely hard workers but some times it’s just an illusion of working.

It’s considered bad manner to leave work before your superiors or as soon as it’s time to clock out. Work culture is more ingrained into their lifestyle than it is here (very common to go out drinking with your peers and superiors after work too which can sometimes feel like work itself) but things are tending to lax up a bit.
But even then this is more of a corporate thing. I doubt small business owners do any of this.

Your post reminds me of a banking friend of mine who thought sake was for 'downing'. He was invited for a very premium sake tasting by Japanese counterparts who were absolutely appalled at the way he downed the sake. They were, of course, observing their social etiquette by not correcting him. I had to tell him this when we spoke after that - otherwise he would have been oblivious to the way he - frankly - insulted his host.

There is no immunity to being ignorant of local custom. If locals are too polite to call you out on your chit that's a credit to them, but make no mistake: when local populations expect this sort of thing of foreigners it is universally bad. As bad as those idiotic 'English teachers' in China and other parts of Asia. Military brahs can speak to this too if they'd like. It's a terrible thing to run rampage over local populations and there is no real immunity from being negatively judged for that. Not being told != immunity.

First off, many black men would love to visit Africa, it just wouldn't have anything to do with sex. When it comes to sex, Africans and Chocolate Americans look very similar most of the time, so there is no "exotic" factor to it. I'd love to visit Rhwanda, but if I'm going to some country as a sexpat, I'm gonna go for places where people are of a different ethnicity because variety is part of the fun.

If it were only about sex, I'd want to visit Thailand and Brazil in that order. For actual culture and seeing the sites, that's a much bigger list.
