Sure the guy was a dick. Don’t think that is a good enough justification to shoot him while he is fleeing.

Or you know, he tases the cop and then takes his gun and shoots him in the head

You know a good way to not die? Don't tase a cop

But he didn’t take the cops gun and try and kill him. You’re talking about a hypothetical that didn’t happen.

I can just as well use the hypothetical, they could have just let him flee, knowing his name, license plate etc, then gone to his home and apprehended him at a later time

It's about the risk. If I'm in the cop's position, I'm not risking this dude tasing me and then taking my gun and shooting me. Nope, quick bullet to the brain, that's an easy decision

Based on the judgement of the situation from what I saw I don’t think the cop geneuinely feared for his life, even if he was tased he’s got his partner with him who’s also armed. Let’s say hypothetically the suspect did try and do that, the suspect would have to stop, turn around, go down to the floor to remove the gun from the officers body, then remove it and shoot him. All this is gonna take a good 5 seconds or so, his back up would easily have time to use his own weapon in that situation. You’re basically saying well the situation could have changed and brooks could have become the aggressor, well in that case he’d be justified in defending his partner against brooks, but as of the situation in the video, brooks is quite clearly fleeing rather than attempting to kill either of the cops

Lol at justifying this situation bro. You sound like a ****ing moron

I'm going to reiterate the only point the matters: Steal a cop's taser and/or threaten a cop in any way and you are asking to get shot

Don't like it? Don't do it. Pretty damn simple dude, we don't need the armchair discussion

I’m not gonna lose sleep over it either, but I’m trying to have a discussion about whether or not it’s a morally justified killing and I don’t think it is. Of course the guys behaving like and idiot, of course he should have complied, but is what he did so bad that he deserved to die for being a drunk idiot? I don’t think so. And was either the officers or any by standers lives in imminent danger at the point where brooks was killed? Again I’m gonna say no

guy got shot to death because he ran away from a dui?

tbh, if someone pointed a Taser at me at that close proximity I would be naturally inclined to put my hands out and at the very least seek to push it away.

senseless loss of life. the victim's actions are by no means non contributory but he should not have been killed by the officers like that- shot in the back while fleeing

I wasn't arguing justification though, just the level of danger inherent in the job. It is highly overexaggerated. The numbers prove that. It is weird that the US has become a police state, and there are still people who speak of the police like they are some sort of outgunned underdogs. Lmao.

We can play the CHOSE game all day.

The dumb ass then took it and chose to ran. Still don't think he should have got popped. The poor bastard probably has his mind warped from all this stuff going on with black dudes getting murdered by cops. He didn't trust them. Who knows if he was so drunk and didn't know what was happening? No one knows. The cops need to be held responsible for failing to do their jobs. Just like everyone else and they need to pay the consequencesat for the actions that they CHOSE.
He chose to drink and drive and he chose to attack the officers and steal their weapon. You may not realize it, but standing behind this type of case actually hurts your cause. The officers were justified and anyone without any preconceived prejudices can see that from the video. You want a real case of policing gone wrong? Check out Breonna Taylor.

This is another of those situations where I'm astonished by the strong opinions I'm seeing that this was an unjustified use of deadly force. It points toward a larger problem in our society wherein everyone is now an expert on everything, and they use that false confidence to scream their ill-informed opinions from the rooftops and castigate anyone who dissents, while often calling them a racist for doing so. The suspect here was drunk, but I'm seeing this situation being used as an example of how police are supposedly not equipped to de-escalate.

Anyone who's sane agrees that George Floyd's death was a travesty. However, it's troubling to see every single use of deadly force Monday morning quarterbacked to the extent that the LEO involved is immediately fired when he actually did everything in his power to prevent this from happening. 1) He was calm and measured during the field sobriety test and the initial attempt at an arrest, 2) he didn't immediately pull out his firearm and instead a) attempted to physically overpower the suspect and then b) use a taser. Only then, when faced with the prospect of being hit with his own taser and incapacitated, did he do what is clear in the video that he knew was a last resort. Yet he's fired and painted an international villain without so much as an investigation even? Cowardice.

Yet the Monday morning quarterbacking goes on, and it's disingenuous because it doesn't address the multitude of plainly undesirable outcomes that could have occurred if this officer didn't discharge his weapon. Outcomes that go beyond just losing his own life, although that should be reason enough to justify his actions. How much danger can we reasonably expect officers to put themselves in? They want to live too and have families they want to go home to. The expectations the general public has for police are getting out of hand, and the same people want to defund the police? We're gonna make it so that no one sane or capable wants to become a LEO, and those that do won't be paid enough or provided with the proper training and resources to do the job properly or capably. If this is the path we want to go down then we're gonna see even more deaths.

I'm a clinical psychologist and it astonishes me how people think that my profession can go into these situations and just magically horse-whisper anyone into dropping their weapon. I'm open to the idea of mental health professionals being added to policingteams, but there's no way in hell I, or anyone I work with, would agree to that without a lot of police backup. Where I work, I push a panic button and cops on scene will come and take over. Ideally, that doesn't have to happen and I can de-escalate the situation or prevent it from getting there in the first place, but even the most outlier event will happen occasionally. And in a time when everyone has a cell phone to instantly record what's happening around them, we're going to see it plastered all over social media when it does happen. That probably fools us into thinking these things happen more often than they actually do. Use of deadly force is decreasing steadily and has been for a long time, yet we wouldn't think that given current events.

Any sane person knows that George Floyd's death was unacceptable. But we have to be prepared to accept that police will have to use deadly force against some suspects in order to keep themselves and us safe, and we can't have a national emergency every time that does happen. Especially before all the facts come out.

It's amazing how effective a couple days of media spin is. Initially everyone was 100% agreed this guy deserved to be shot. Now it's like 50/50 even as more negative info comes out.

He was not just "running away"

That's the moment the first shot was fired. Notice the light from his taser is still on, and still pointed back at the officer. The office shot with a weapon being pointed at him. End of story.

This entire post is gold, but especially the bolded part. Essentially we now have people who believe that with six camera angles and plenty of time to review things with all the after the fact information, they can judge what people did in the moment as inappropriate.

I also think there's some psychological issue here with the concept of wanting people exempt from easily foreseeable consequences. Like somehow the expectation is that we have a duty to make sure we protect those who want to wrestle a weapon away from an officer in the future.

I'm glad we're back to justified shootings. Ironically race tensions are far reduced when we DON'T all agree on the situation, ironically.

A drunk idiot? Come on dude. A drunken idiot is the guy at the bar who won't stop hitting on the bartender. Or the drunk friend who passes out in the backyard. This dude literally fought with police to resist arrest. Stole one of their weapons. Fled from them and fired the weapon at police. That is NOT just being a drunk idiot.

Looks like the fuking retards have arrived. Should they have tased him with the one he stole, or should they try again with the one that's already connected to him doing nothing? Or, is there a third magical back-up taser hiding somewhere that you know about?

You and anyone else who thinks like this is what's wrong with this country. Cops don't need to chill when criminals could take their lives. Fuking clown.

Let him run, he’s a petty criminal in this scenario and they’ve got his car, with his license plates and maybe drivers license etc inside so can easily track him down. No one had to die in this situation, it wasn’t a case of his life or theirs
So it is a law enforcement officers job to let a suspect who has body slammed and punched police in their face, stolen one of their weapons, fired that weapon at them, run free in society and just call it a day and write paper on a subject who has displayed highly aggressive and dangerous criminal activity and is in possession of a stolen weapon?

Interesting.

fights you have been in in your life : 0

anyone who has actually been in a fight knows playing risky games with "hopefully the other officer uses his taser and hopefully it connects with the man running who has already body slammed us and punched us in the face and stolen one of our weapons, works"

Thats not how physical altercations go, and placing your life in danger over a criminal who imitated all of the aggression is not fair or reasonable.

This is one of the situations where I look like an ass to all sides because I don't have a strong agenda for any political party. To me, the guy is an ******* for wrestling with the police, stealing the weapon, and then firing a taser. The officer to me was stupid to shoot to kill instead of disabling the guy and then arresting him. If he had shot him in the calf and prevented him from running away and then cuffed him, there wouldn't be such an outcry.

I'd rather have martial law than a bunch of *******s running around ruining everything we have built.

I'm not sure when fighting with a cop or running from them because acceptable and not a crime LMAO. Bunch of slack-jawed *******s in the world these days. Can't wait until they are crushed

Interesting.
A petty criminal with a non deadly weapon who’s name they know, car they have along with licence plate. Look I get it’s a split second decision and cops are put in tough situations that I don’t have to face in my line of work, but in this case I do not think he mad the right decision, this man could have been apprenhed without any loss of life

Bit of a difference between viewing something as unaccpetable and then worthy of death.

It is considered a deadly weapon and would require a license. not the hand held ones. Police are trained where to shoot and not shoot to make it less than lethal. Either way, it is a cops responsibility to avoid incapacitation when they have a service weapon...at all costs. Similar reason Zimmerman got off.

You cross the line of being a petty criminal when you fight cops, steal a taser, and try to fire it at them. You want to talk about who didn't make the right decisions? Should we start with the decision to drive so drunk (endangering the lives of plenty of citizens) that you pass out in the Wendy's drive through? Or should we move on to when he decided he wasn't going to jail for that first decision, and every decision that followed?

this.

And to go further, the police shooting him was NOT a punishment, so this whole "cops cant be judge jury and executioner" thing is bullchit.

The man escalated the situation by laying his hands on police
He then escalated it more by punching them in the face and body slamming one of them
He then escalated it more by stealing one of their weapons
He then escalated it more by shooting the weapon at the officer.

He literally drove the situation to its outcome.
This is a clear case of people not wanting to put the responsibility in the criminal and it is a sickness with society and the current generation of people ages 18-40.

Literal news media headlines :

Rayshard brooks, father of 3 shot in back by police after celebrating daughters birthday

Also they like using the words "obtained" the officers taser and "asleep" in the parking "lot".

It is amazing how biased they make these stories.

He also got in a "scuffle" with police, not a fight, not beating the **** out of two police officers, not hititng them in the face and body slamming them. Just a little good ole fun scuffle.
