It's possible. I'm not sure how trustworthy the Indian sites are. I agree though that Parnate may be a better option given availability. From what I've read it's at least as effective as Nardil for depression. My understanding is that Nardil is better for social anxiety (owing to GABA action).

Phenelzine Interactions

While you are taking phenelzine you must not eat foods that are high in tyramine, including:

aged or smoked meats, fermented meats, dry sausage (including salami, pepperoni, Lebanon bologna), liver, pickled herring;
any spoiled or improperly stored meats, fish, or dairy products;
beer and wine (including non-alcoholic beer or wine);
cheese (other than cottage cheese or cream cheese);
sauerkraut;
over-the-counter supplements or cough and cold medicines that contain dextromethorphan or tyramine;
large amounts of chocolate or caffeine;
yogurt;
fava beans;
meat extracts; or
yeast extracts (including Brewer's yeast).

The dietary restrictions have been overstated. See this website (this guy is an expert in MAOIs)https://psychotropical.com/maoi-diet-info-overview/

Fewer foods than previously supposed have problematically high tyramine levels because international food hygiene regulations have improved both production and handling. Cheese is the only food that has, in the past, been associated with documented fatalities from hypertension, and now almost all ‘supermarket’ cheeses are perfectly safe in healthy-sized portions. The variability of sensitivity to tyramine between individuals, and the sometimes unpredictable amount of tyramine content in foods, means a little knowledge and care are still advised.

Most of the previously held concerns about MAOIs turn out to be mythical: they are either incorrect, or over-rated in importance, or stem from apprehensions born out of insufficient knowledge.

Some Common Myths

The diet is difficult

People cannot have cheese or red wine

MAOIs have many dangerous interactions with other drugs

One cannot give an anaesthetic

It is difficult to swap to and from other drugs

One cannot combine them with tricyclic anti-depressants (TCAs)

They have a lot of side effects

MAOIs cause hypertension/should not be given to hypertensive patients

Tyramine reactions need urgent treatment

Patients should be given nifedipine sub-lingually

Adrenaline cannot be used
Are you saying we dont need to follow the diet? If so, this puts a lot of stress off my back.. I really want to try this but it's my doctor whose gonna object to it. I'm going to try discussing with her more on it once I see her.

Also, I have schizoaffective disorder.. can I still take nardil at the same time as those drugs?

I could never advise you not to follow the diet. But you can see that these days foods are naturally low in tyramine. I eat cheese and yogurts every day and have had zero problems. The dietary restrictions are massively overstated. They make it seem like you're risking death every moment but it's not the case at all. Before taking it you should research carefully but I have not changed my diet one bit.

I'm very sorry I know a fair bit about treatments for depression and anxiety but I'm not sure about schizoaffective disorder. I understand that it's similar to schizophrenia? Are you on an antipsychotic? I will say that I also take Seroquel (was prescribed as an adjunct for depression - it never worked for that but it knocks me out when I can't sleep so I stay on it) and have zero problems.

Obviously you should talk to your doctor about possible interactions with whatever other medication you are on.

I really hope it goes well for you. I sound like a zealot but Nardil has changed my life completely. I'm sure Parnate would be just as good. But fukk Moclobemide. It's like comparing diesel to rocket fuel.

Hi, I have been a long time lurker and had an account years ago but I saw this thread and realised I need help, here is how ive been feeling

Its like on 1 day I was part of society, friends, family etc at the beach swimming then suddenly out of no where a current grabs me and begins to drag me away from everyone. At first I am trying to get back to them and they are trying to save me but over time I realise that the more I try the further away I get. After a while I begin to drift further and further to the point where I can't see land or people and am truly lost at sea, here I begin to feel like I am sinking, people who were once trying to save me have moved on and accepted I have gone. Over time these people are getting on with their lives and have moved on from me. It is here where something even worse happens, I begin to slowly come back to society however something has happened, something has changed and I can now see people around me playing, laughing and living life however they can't see me and I am just left there to observe everyone living their life whilst I fade away into nothingness.

I feel the exact same way. The same thing happened to me over the last 5 years. To me the world still looks the same, but the people and interactions etc do not. I don't relate to anyone anymore and i don't know how to explain it. I'm just certain i'm living in hell right now srs.

Those energy drinks I’ve been having give me energy for awhile during the day than I crash so bad. Feel so depressed right now from the crash down. I don’t know what else to do to get energy during the day though.

Be careful with those bud, only drink them before or during a workout or else your crash. Whenever I drink them I feel awful after it, I don't mean to sound patrionising or anything but crack one open during a chest routing

Wow, that’s a great analogy; it really captures the gradual progression of the problem. I think many of us feel that way.

I just don’t know what else to do to be energetic during the day though. The energy drink helps for awhile but than I just crash. It really sucks.

And your analogy on how life is so different now compared to before is how I feel as well. I truly think it’s smartphones & social media that changed everything. People used to actually talk to others when out. Now everyone is so used to being in their own bubble due to smartphones being everywhere now. My theory is if you’re not in a person’s phone contacts than you don’t mean anything to them. Everyone already has their own personal groups that they text everyday. I really have no interest in being like the 10th wheel of someone’s circle of friends. I’ll always know that there’s a whole bunch of people in front of me that are more important to them & I’m just the guy they would look to when everyone else is busy.

There really isnt' anything to do as an adult without a family. You can't really even be yourself and are expected to act "mature." Life is really only fun when you are spending time with attractive women and they're flirting with you man. This **** is so ****ing boring.

They say antidepressants are only one step to getting better and there is coping skills and becoming active.. what did you do to become better? Only take med?

No, I've had a lot of therapy. Exercise every day, meditation, etc.

None of it does a damn thing for me (actually maybe running helped sometimes but only to a degree). The Nardil has wiped my depression and so now I AM more active and it comes easily (I actively want to do things) whereas everything was a huge slog before.

Like I'm going on holiday to Croatia now. I was absolutely dreading it to be honest, wondering how I would cope with the long drive, spending so much money just to be miserable somewhere else, etc. Now I can't wait.

For people with severe depression, trying to fight your way out of it with all the self help type techniques is nigh on impossible. You find the right med and suddenly all the things you're supposed to do to fight depression just come naturally anyway.

I'm not saying meds are the only answer or the answer for everybody. If you have mild depression I would definitely advocate exercise, etc and that may be enough to make you better. Not the case with severe depression. Mild and severe depression almost bear no resemblance to each other, they are like different illnesses.

Therapy has been utterly useless for depression for me. Maybe it would be good for people whose depression stems from trauma, issues, etc. But not for people who have got some chemical storm in their heads. CBT was good for OCD for me. That did help me learn coping techniques, ways to stop obsessing, etc.

I’m curious as to whether you can pinpoint the beginnings of your chronic depression? Did you have it as a small child? Was it a gradual development, or did you have severe depression from the outset?

Hey. I was a very happy kid and had no mental health problems until late adolescence.

Stress (med school exams) was definitely a trigger for the first catastrophic episode of depression. But I recovered and went back to normal for a good while. After that though lesser stresses would push me into depressive episodes, I had just become more susceptible to it (in part maybe because I was so afraid of it recurring).

The course of depression changed over many years. I don't think that depression is a progressive illness for everybody, in the same way that something like MS is, but it has been for me. The depression eventually took on a life of its own and would occur spontaneously, even in the absence of stress. It also became more and more unremitting until in the last year or so it has been there almost every day.

I have probably mentioned this book before in this thread but the account of depression that resonates most closely with me is 'A Darkness Visible' by William Styron. It's a short but great read and the way he describes the illness is exactly how I felt during the episodes.

I would really distinguish between my type of depression and the type of depression that eod8989 has. I think we're at two extremes. Mine (like Styron's) is at this point massively biological (which is why the right med alone was able to completely fix me) and his seems to be almost entirely exogenous (meaning that if his life circumstances changed and he suddenly had tonnes of friends, social activities, cash and girls he was into then the 'depression' would vanish pretty fast). And I'm not saying whether one is worse than the other but I do believe they are two completely different things and should not both be called 'depression'.

How about you? Are you able to pinpoint causes of your own depression and when did it start?

How about you? Are you able to pinpoint causes of your own depression and when did it start?[/QUOTE]This is where we differ in opinion. I have my doubts as to whether a line can be so neatly drawn between the type of depression you have and the type EOD has. That’s not to say I think all depression is the exactly the same or has exactly the same causes, but my personal opinion is that they’re more the same than they are different. But then again this ties into my overall belief that everything is environmentally influenced.

You even describe your condition as being massively biological ‘at this point’, indicating it wasn’t once that way. I think it’s unwise and reductionist to throw out the environmental origins/components, especially in regards to figuring out a more long-term / less medically dependent solution.

Re my depression: I don’t really think of myself as having depression, but I reckon if I went to a psychiatrist there would be a 50/50 chance i’d get diagnosed with ‘dysthymia’. It’s very much quality of life related in my case and generally a combination of being quite isolated, no family, very few friends, no intimate partner, no community, chit job, etc. Having said that, I think if you suffer with these problems long enough they do start to have an increasing biological influence. For example, I think it’s likely they induce a chronic state of stress, thus your body starts to run on stress hormones, which are catabolic, which in-turn makes everything worse.

Cliffs:

1. december 2013 dad died off cancer
2. dad owned a cleaning company (he cleaned apartments, hallways/stairs in buildings where people have apartments to live in) which i took care off after coz it was main source of income
3. april 2014 got dumped by girl i was 4 years with
4. Rock bottomed, felt terrible
5. found some salvation in hitting the gym

fast forward

1. Sold my dad cleaning company
2. Got into cryptocurrencies in 2017
3. earned decent amount
4. financialy free if i dont overspend
5. occasionaly still do crypto

BUT was still very very depressed, only time i wasnt depressed was when things were happening and something nice was going on, like crypto craze in which i got involved in 2017. Other then that when i didnt had much occupation i was lazy, sleepy and depressed especialy as i dont need to regularly work a standard job so i could sleep for days and no consequences.

Right now and what helped me:

I realized that only way to cure my depression is to find some passion/hobbies and set new goals. Right now i started hitting the gym again seriously and as my only focus (I am training sports and doing gym for past 10 years but never could do it as only activity due to college/job and so on). Meaning I dont do anything beside lift, eat, gym and hang out with my friends. I will also try focus on my social media when i get impressive shape and start new chapter in that area. Also i live in relatively cheap country, have money for all my needs, something i dreamed before and wished for but it still didnt make me happy at all, it made my life easier and helped me get rid of problems related to bills, expenses and so on but at the same time just made me lazier, unmotivated and even more depressed.

Also at start even when i didnt want to go to gym and thought it wont change a thing regarding my depression i forced myself to go to gym, even if i was just sitting somewhere and stretching, but with time it became a habit and i started doing weightlifting again and started getting back into shape, then it sparked some hope in me, also made me feel better as i felt something is happening for good and i could see myself improving and moving forward.

Stay strong guys and remember we are all going to make it. What helped me hugely, again I repeat is to find some passions, something that will constantly keep you moving. Also what doesnt kill you will make you stronger. Right now if something bad happens in life i will see it like life trying to **** me over but i just wont let him, coz i dont want him to succeed and let him bring me down.

Cheers!
...afterwards, I asked him how he ran that fast, and he told me that it is all in the motivation you light in your mind... imagining your own world and blotting out everything else.

So i asked, "What do you imagine?"
He replied, "What do you?"
I told him to run faster, I like to imagine that i am being chased by wolf.
He smiles and says, "In my mind, I am one that is chasing the wolf."

That was the day I started to understand...

I miss having a girl around who would just check in to see how I'm doing every now and then. I'm so lonely. Wish I had someone.

I don't disagree with you in many ways. Environmental factors were massively important in the genesis of my depression.

However at this point things are just different for me. Nardil has worked for me and now I wake up every day loving life and looking forward to the day ahead. NOTHING in my circumstances has changed.

I think the only point I disagree with you on is that my depression is similar to EODs. He is sad about not having friends, loneliness, lack of interest in his girl, etc. I never experienced any of that. The depression I had was almost 'physical'. I think Styron describes it as a neuralgic pain.

It is a COMPLETELY different state of existence and bears zero resemblance to ordinary sadness or melancholy. It is psychic pain and unless you have experienced it there is no possible way that you could know what it feels like. I'm not saying YOU haven't, I'm just saying that people that haven't experienced this kind of depression simply cannot understand it.

It would be like me trying to understand schizophrenia. I haven't experienced it and simply cannot imagine what that is like.

EOD and I have very different types of depression.

Just to be clear, I really like this discussion and hope nothing I say riles you. I think it's fine for us to have different points of view and a lot of what you say makes total sense to me.

I really hope that you can gradually address the issues you describe. In no way to I mean to trivialise the kind of depression that stems from isolation, etc. It's bad enough to drive people to suicide. My only point is that it's different to my depression.

Just to add (forum won't let me edit), Nardil has transformed my life. But I know I need to use this remission to pursue passions, hobbies, socialising, exercise, etc. I'm doing all that except the exercise because I injured both knees and think I broke my toe after fainting from the orthostatic hypotension, lol. Also banged my head badly. If any of you start Nardil, watch out for this!

Just use a sheet of paper and write things down how ur day look like and then add something new. Try new activity, try run some new hustle on the side, there is 1000 things you could do in your free time to occupy ur mind. Also when u start working on something and self development your life gonna get better and you gonna have it easier to socialise, meet new people and so on, you gonna start attracting better things. You can sign up for some group trainings or yoga or archery, some martial arts and so on. Maybe you get good at it and have talent and start doing it seriously, compete and so on. Dont let depression drag you down the rabbit hole. If its hard to do it force ur self, look urself in mirror and say its time to change you ****er

If you want difference in your life you need to add new things to your life, make changes, big or small, bigger the better.
