After everyone leaves i get the gym to myself and get to lock up whenever i'm ready to leave. It's great i got mad lucky, and it's a legit gym to, dozens of people that have in the past or currently won our state or country title (amatuer). We go to coaches house every big fight to all watch together it's pretty awesome. Albeit not everyone gets all that, theirs plenty of people there that do there own things, the only requirements to get extra work is wanting to be a fighter and hard work. Everyone gets at least 3 rounds of padwork a session tho, like the lil kids that couldn't care less about actual boxing and stuff.Been wanting to for a long time. But right now i don't have a car yet, so i'm saving money. The only real boxing gyms are pretty far away from me so i need transportation first.
That said, as i mentioned before itt, if the boxing gym has a coach that doesn't give pointers/advice and all i do is pay $60+ a month to hit the bag, i might as well invest in a heavybag myself and some good gloves/tape and practice in my backyard.
Ideally, you'd learn boxing legit, do mitt work, learn how to properly punch/block/slip and all that. And then after a few months, you spar against someone who will go easy on you so you learn something instead of simply trying to survive while getting beat up.
For now, it's all in the open though. Gotta get a car first, then try a gym out. But most likely i'll stick to purchasing a heavy bag for now.
How about you, you already box?

For me it will be a 40 minute drive. On the websites it says you can get private lessons for $65 an hour but no thanks lol. Who can afford that?
Awesome to hear you have such a great set up! Boxing is a beautiful sport.

It really is, i hope to go pro one day, nothing else i was to do, well no i will go pro, i just hope i can win a world title one day, that's the dream.Wtf? $50 a year? It's 50 for adults, 30 for juniors, i'm lucky it's so cheap cause i would never be able to afford these ridiculous prices mentioned in the thread.

No matter how good you are you're still gonna get hit and you need to learn to deal with that, floyd jr still gets hit.

This is also a problem, where fighters usually have trouble buying in on advice. Its hard to know who to believe since everyone is giving advice nowadays. And so I don't blame fighters shutting everyone out.

What’s the best resource if I want to teach my son to box? I don’t want him to be a fighter, but I want him to know what to do (defend / move / throw a solid punch) if some kid squares him up.

I know conceptually how to box, punches / circling / defending - just was looking for a fundamental a-z guide. Not interested in training at a gym, I was thinking more of a heavy bag, a book, and letting him beat the chit out of me.
I’ve seen several fights in my life that were averted because one of the guys got in a legit boxing stance and started moving like they knew what the fuk they were doing and the other guy realized he didn’t want none of that.

Let's say, maybe $80 - $120 a month.
If you go to those fitness gyms like Title Boxing or whatever, I'm pretty sure they are cheap AF in comparison. Maybe like $30 a month.
If you go the 1-on-1 trainer route, you will spend a lot more than both for private sessions (obviously).
Also, going to a boxing gym doesn't mean you will always get 1-on-1 attention regularly. They might drag you into the group workouts and stuff, but not spend too much time with you each day you're there. It varies depending on the gym. They might be busy with the real fighters in the gym, or they might want you to be consistent and show up before they take time to teach you. For your first week, they might show you some attention since you won't know ****. General rule of thumb is they might step in when you're hitting the bag to talk to you about your technique.
If you really want to learn to box, you're going to have to find a reputable gym nearby and show consistency going regularly every week . You won't learn much from fitness gyms, maybe basic form and technique (but even then, I doubt it will be perfect).
Depending on what state you're in, you'll be luckier than some in terms of finding a gym (and maybe not too expensive). Texas, California, NY all have a lot of boxing gyms (although some are garbage).

I.e golden gloves silver gloves. Regionals etc etc.Can I learn how to box at one of those boxing focused "fitness" gyms with all of the sloots, or should I look up a real boxing gym?
I want to learn... but the idea of mingling with sloots sounds good too.
Also how does a real boxing gym work? Do I have to pay some guy per lesson? Which I imagine isn't cheap.
Or are there group classes?

If you go to a gym and they dont schedule fights and sign you up to usa boxing then laugh and walk out

Right now I'm training in LA at a Hispanic gym. If you want to get good at boxing you have to go to an old school boxing gym. But at your age most trainers wont give you the time of day. Every beginner at my gym does not get any attention from the coach until you show everyday for months and do well in sparring.
They will either one of two things: throw you into sparring very early to see how you react or just let you do whatever you want and not give you any attention. If you go spar early, do well in the sense that you were not afraid and keep coming back then the coaches will start giving you more attention. They are not gonna waste their time and energy on a guy that has no chance at competing on any serious level.
