That said, as i mentioned before itt, if the boxing gym has a coach that doesn't give pointers/advice and all i do is pay $60+ a month to hit the bag, i might as well invest in a heavybag myself and some good gloves/tape and practice in my backyard.
Ideally, you'd learn boxing legit, do mitt work, learn how to properly punch/block/slip and all that. And then after a few months, you spar against someone who will go easy on you so you learn something instead of simply trying to survive while getting beat up.

For now, it's all in the open though. Gotta get a car first, then try a gym out. But most likely i'll stick to purchasing a heavy bag for now.
How about you, you already box?
yeah man i've been boxing for a while now, damn that's a tricky situation i scored lucky, my gyms just a 15 minute run from my house, albiet it's a small dodgy gym with used equipment but i pay 50 dollars a year for the insurance and nothing else, i get constant one on one work and so do all the fighters, plenty of padwork, and sparring, we went to my coaches house to train all through quarantine. After everyone leaves i get the gym to myself and get to lock up whenever i'm ready to leave. It's great i got mad lucky, and it's a legit gym to, dozens of people that have in the past or currently won our state or country title (amatuer). We go to coaches house every big fight to all watch together it's pretty awesome. Albeit not everyone gets all that, theirs plenty of people there that do there own things, the only requirements to get extra work is wanting to be a fighter and hard work. Everyone gets at least 3 rounds of padwork a session tho, like the lil kids that couldn't care less about actual boxing and stuff.

I couldn't imagine going to the gyms like mentioned in this thread, honestly i didn't know they existed till like 6 months ago.

Wtf? $50 a year? And personal 1 on 1 work? fuarkkkk wish i had that.
For me it will be a 40 minute drive. On the websites it says you can get private lessons for $65 an hour but no thanks lol. Who can afford that?
Awesome to hear you have such a great set up! Boxing is a beautiful sport.

It really is man, try and look in lower economic areas and honestly you're probably not going to find the best gyms, but you're also most like to find cheaper on average much higher quality real gyms with real fighters with coaches that know what they're doing, and less of those fake boxercise pieces of chit. It really is, i hope to go pro one day, nothing else i was to do, well no i will go pro, i just hope i can win a world title one day, that's the dream.

It's 50 for adults, 30 for juniors, i'm lucky it's so cheap cause i would never be able to afford these ridiculous prices mentioned in the thread.

Its irrelevant because i'm giving you advice based on what has proven to work in the real world - not only does it work, it works magnificently.

This is also a problem, where fighters usually have trouble buying in on advice. Its hard to know who to believe since everyone is giving advice nowadays. And so I don't blame fighters shutting everyone out.

Bruh the point is your advice means nothing 'hur dur hit and don't get hit' No fuarkin chit but it aint that simple, everyone gets hit, i get hit, my sparring partners get hit, anthony joshua gets hit, floyd mayweather got hit, ali got hit, everyone gets hit at some point, your point is literally mute and you're an idiot, no wonder you're red

What’s the best resource if I want to teach my son to box? I don’t want him to be a fighter, but I want him to know what to do (defend / move / throw a solid punch) if some kid squares him up.

Inafter money

I’ve wrestled with him since he was a baby. Him and his buddies wrestle and grapple all the time.

I know conceptually how to box, punches / circling / defending - just was looking for a fundamental a-z guide. Not interested in training at a gym, I was thinking more of a heavy bag, a book, and letting him beat the chit out of me.

I’ve seen several fights in my life that were averted because one of the guys got in a legit boxing stance and started moving like they knew what the fuk they were doing and the other guy realized he didn’t want none of that.

If you go to those fitness gyms like Title Boxing or whatever, I'm pretty sure they are cheap AF in comparison. Maybe like $30 a month.

If you go the 1-on-1 trainer route, you will spend a lot more than both for private sessions (obviously).

Also, going to a boxing gym doesn't mean you will always get 1-on-1 attention regularly. They might drag you into the group workouts and stuff, but not spend too much time with you each day you're there. It varies depending on the gym. They might be busy with the real fighters in the gym, or they might want you to be consistent and show up before they take time to teach you. For your first week, they might show you some attention since you won't know ****. General rule of thumb is they might step in when you're hitting the bag to talk to you about your technique.

If you really want to learn to box, you're going to have to find a reputable gym nearby and show consistency going regularly every week . You won't learn much from fitness gyms, maybe basic form and technique (but even then, I doubt it will be perfect).

Depending on what state you're in, you'll be luckier than some in terms of finding a gym (and maybe not too expensive). Texas, California, NY all have a lot of boxing gyms (although some are garbage).
This is why I don't want to do boxing other than the CTE part as well. You pay money but don't get much 1 on 1 tuition, espeicially if you are older than 18. BJJ is good but there is usually more experience in judo clubs. Mynold judo club had more old timer black belts than white. BJJ is the opposite.

I want to learn... but the idea of mingling with sloots sounds good too.

Also how does a real boxing gym work? Do I have to pay some guy per lesson? Which I imagine isn't cheap.

Or are there group classes?
No you wont learn how to box or fight in a fitness gym. They just work out. You have to spar you jave to get in the ring.real boxing gyms you will get insurance through usa boxing which os the only governing body for amtuer boxing in the united states. I.e golden gloves silver gloves. Regionals etc etc.

If you go to a gym and they dont schedule fights and sign you up to usa boxing then laugh and walk out

The problem here is (1)either youre not listening to the message im trying to convey, which is place a higher premium on defense than offense (2)Im not doing a good jerb at explaining.

Of course there's more to but this is just for starters. And yall keep saying idk what im talking but again, Ive seen these technqiues work in the real world and not only do they work, its the best there is.

If you want to get good at boxing you have to go to an old school boxing gym. But at your age most trainers wont give you the time of day. Every beginner at my gym does not get any attention from the coach until you show everyday for months and do well in sparring.

They will either one of two things: throw you into sparring very early to see how you react or just let you do whatever you want and not give you any attention. If you go spar early, do well in the sense that you were not afraid and keep coming back then the coaches will start giving you more attention. They are not gonna waste their time and energy on a guy that has no chance at competing on any serious level.
