I was friends with a iwo jima machine gunner when i was in college, he worked out at my work.
He didn’t tell me much about the war besides how tough it was, heard a story that he ran out of gernades one day. His eyes would be blank when he did tell me about joining the marines. Said it was the stupidest thing he ever did.
He dropped his keys one time in the parking lot snow and it was freezing, i ran out there while my boss is freaking out cause i left some clients to go find his keys
All i said was its the least i can fukin do and they can wait

This is what I've been saying for years now. When schools needed "safe spaces" after Trump was elected, that kind of ticked me off. I didn't vote for Trump, but I didn't cry about it when he won either. People told me I was being irrational and unfair, and I would bring up D-Day as an example. I asked them if the soldiers marching to get shredded by machine guns needed a "safe space". These men made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives to defend our freedom. Some of which didn't even have the choice to join the armed forces. Now we look at today and I wonder how many of those lost would have gladly traded places with someone from today just to live in a country where they didn't agree with the president. It utterly blows my mind that we cater to this safe space no one get their feelings hurt mentality. You will always meet someone who doesn't agree with you, who doesn't like you, and who hurts your feelings, that's the way life works. I'm all about fighting racism, gender inequality, LGBTQ, etc., because those are basic human rights. But when you start crying because Trump won, then I won't pity you. If you want someone else in office, vote for someone, spread the word, and be active in the community. Don't just cry about it.

You can say the same for any war in history from stone age times to modern times. I can just imagine the fear of a young Roman legionary as he and his comrades were being cut down by one by one in the Battle of Teutoburg forests or the fear of a Crusading knight who plunged headlong into Saladin's infantry or a French soldier in Napolean's army who walked rank and file in the face of enemy fire/cannon fire all the while maintaining formation and getting in range to shoot or a teenage Union soldier fighting with a Confederate soldier with bayonets; each intent on killing each other etc etc etc.

I remember reading somewhere years ago that Quentin Tarantino remarked that the opening minutes of the D-Day scene were part of the most terrifying scene he'd ever seen in cinema. I'm not the biggest fan of his, but I'm sure we could agree he's known for overly violent movies so to be able to shock Tarantino says something about that scene's brutality. Amazing movie: I remember going to see this in 8th grade thinking it would be a soppy war movie and I was shocked to my core by what I saw. That one soldier screaming "Mama" on the beach while his insides pour out still makes me crazy to this day.
On topic: no way that many of those kids knew what they were getting into, and yes... Allied forces botched the airborne assault (or were hampered by poor weather, someone else can factcheck me on that) so shoreline defenses weren't disabled by the time the amphibious assaults took place. Beyond that, I would speculate some knew the cause and went with it and all in the name of being starry-eyed and "defending the country". I was a young teenager when 9/11 happened and I remember how amped up myself and a lot of my friends were at the thought of going to war to "fight back" so you give someone a cause to fight for and it's unbelievable how quickly someone can be molded into a soldier - "Nothing more dangerous in this world than a fool with a cause."
