Good chart on coronavirus

Found this chart helpful.

My personal position is: I don't wanna get it, just like I don't wanna get the flu, plus I know it's more infectious, so it makes sense to take some minor precautions.

If I had respiratory issues, I'd be extremely cautious of course.

You definitely want to avoid Covid-19.

I know most of you all are just talking crap about no masks and going on about your regular day BUT are rightfully cowering at home scared. You can't handle it, so continue what you are doing.

How much should I work to avoid it above what I do for flu each year?

I will say to avoid enclosed areas like gyms. These usually have poor ventilation. Try to keep distance from people. Many are mentally ill and will actively spread aerosols if they are unwell.

You are right to be cautious. If you have lock down in your state, it will help you avoid it. You do not want the 'rona that is for sure. Even if you are asymptomatic, the virus is real and it's nature is unknown for now.

I'm very cautious since my mother lives with me and the wife. If it was just me, I wouldn't care as much, though of course I would take precautions to not potentially spread it to vulnerable people (wearing a mask when I'm around others, etc).

I'm trying to figure out if I should go fly to go a trip with ~6-8 others in early Aug. It's booked already.

Depending on your location, there is a good chance you will contract the virus when travelling. I saw plenty of sick people at the start of the year and is why I believe it all began in early-to-mid January. Also, a lot of people will not have a fever even though they are infected.

It's not about the #, it's about fatality and infection rate. R0 is probably higher for coronavirus, fatality rate is kinda unknown but looks to be at worst 0.3%.

This is false.

The greater you are the harder you fall. You have just heard nothing about the nothings.

I am telling you that you do not want the 'rona. But do not live your life in fear. If you want to travel, accept the risk and wear a mask to limit the spread. It is an air-borne virus I am sure.

Where to? Flying is probably really unpleasant and risky right now, but depending on where you're going to, it could be an opportunity to get out and have some fun. I know one couple that has been using the lockdown to go on a bunch of trips for cheap.

Across the US, beach-house, then fly back again to another location for 1 week, then back home. I'm definitely traveling, just considering cutting the first half of the trip out. But leaning towards just accepting the minimal risk.

I'd be less concerned about catching it but Mrs Beer has pretty chitty lungs. It would be potentially life threatening if she got it so I don't want it. Also it seems like a bad case of the rona is way worse than the flu and I've had flu that nearly sent me to the hospital when I was 10 year younger. So I'm not exactly thrilled with the idea of rolling the dice on it if I can avoid doing so.

Why would you not avoid it? Pretty simple, the same reason you take unnecessary risks for recreation all your life. Everything is cost-benefit. This one is just kinda close in my mind.

And yes it would be a group of 8 people, not complete randoms but some Iโ€™ve never met. It should be a lot of fun.

Only go out for groceries and other necessary things. Wear mask and gloves everywhere if possible. (Discard gloves immediately when you get home.) Wash your hands with soap and wipe down anything you buy with a clorox wipe or if you can't find clorox wipes, use a diluted solution of clorox and water and a paper towel. Do not go to any gatherings, bars, restaurants, etc. Try to avoid being within 3 ft of other people, mask or not. Do not count on your mask to protect you.

Those are the best protips for avoiding the virus. If you show symptoms of being infected, go get tested, and if it gets serious, go to the hospital. Avoid spreading it to other people.

On a personal level, when is the last time you felt like complete chit with a bug or even a bad hangover and clung on to the fact it was gonna be over soon.

Remember that feeling?

Now try to imagine feeling like that with no idea of when or if it would stop

TBH thatโ€™s the key difference, how much feeling like hell on Earth are you personally able to stand

I think you need to baseline your reasoning harder vs. flu. Figure out why youโ€™re taking such extreme precautions for this. I do agree that precautions beyond regular flu are warranted, but the current extent of fear is questionable.

The virus is certainly being leveraged for political reasons, so itโ€™s important to try normalize against that. I try to ignore the media and go to the raw data.

Beyond any political leveraging, the media generally loves fear. Makes for good news and clicks.
