Started a business at 23 with a partner. Started another business at 26 with a few partners. That one took off, we sold it a couple years later, my minority share was worth about $180k. Took that and got involved in a pretty niche market and have made a killing since then. Building an apartment complex now, long term goal is to be heavily invested in multi-family units and some industrial.

The OP was too specific IMO. I'm not in a particularly GOAT city, but live in better than a redneck area. My COL is literally $1k a month while splitting with the GF, not including groceries which probably puts me closer to $1350. Rounding up to $2000 just in case (this number is definitely higher than accuracy) and we've got only $24k a year. My income is ~$95k per year, gross, after bonuses included. Take out taxes and we're down to $72k. Leaves me $48k in savings / investments / luxuries annually.

Point is some of us are in the in-between. Higher income than average for my area, but the area is not as bad as OP describes (redneck trailer).

COL is legit, but I'd rather take the much higher salary in the nicer area.

I only moved to Texas because they matched my bay area base, I'd never move for a pay cut because they play the COL card, that's the dumbest chit you can ever do for your career and I always laugh when recruiters try that angle

But even with the lower COL here 3 years was all I could take of the weather and allegies

Financially you'd probably be better off working in the big city and making big money in a high COL area but some people, myself included, just don't enjoy that lifestyle.

Also it depends on the job. Sometimes it works out better to get a medium salary and live in a low COL area.

Who the hell is comparing COL between the sticks and NYC? The COL argument mostly comes up when comparing your salary in a major city to one of the retardedly expensive coastal cities.

For example, in ATL, my $100K salary is the equivalent of $200K in NYC, which means I can afford a luxury 1 BDR in a more desirable part of the city, a nice car, eat out at decent restaurants, and still max out my 401k + have additional savings afterward. Compare that to NYC where the $120K my company would give me as a "cost of living" adjustment to work out of that office would entail either much less savings or require me to have a roommate to live in a shoe box outside the desirable parts of the city.

You can make other arrangments, for example I can't provide myself internet by myself. So the're a guy with a small company that provides internet trough anthennas and so on. He gives me internet for free (I had to make my own tower for the antenta) And every week I give him a big box with my produce a little bit of everything.
