Close friend asked for 700$ loan(srs)

Hey misc
already been through
this cycle, lost some
because of we will give it back
i dont like to leave my friends weak
but this guy seems fuked more than my own situation
he asked for it since his credits pile went from 15k to around 22k this year
and his job isnt that secure, i myself got fuked with the 50% paycutt since most of
our job depends mainly on finished work commision.

What is your advise?

Don't. Only give the money away and expect it to be gone. Loans never work out. Small amounts like $20 have ruined year long friendships.

DO NOT LOAN HIM THE MONEY....JUST TELL HIM TIMES ARE TOUGH OR YOU HAVE AN UNEXPECTED EXPENSE OR TELL HIM TO PAWN/SELL STUFF.

My story:

Once i loaned $800 to a very close friend like immediately that day in cash. I thought nothing of it and assumed he would pay me back when he could. Well we continued to hang out and about 3 months in I asked him if he had the money to pay me back very politely. he gave me $100 and told me that the rest would be coming within a month. Well another 3 months go by and I ask him about the rest. He tells me he will get it for me but doesn't.

So once I am hanging out at his house and ask him about some computer stuff (new in amazon boxes) at his house that was sitting on the table. It was worth probably $1000. I assumed it was his roomates and then he told me he just bought it.

So I basically asked him for the the $700 he owed me and said I'm going to have to ask for the computer stuff as collateral. He said he would pay me immediately...we went to his bank and he paid me but wasn't happy about it. Remember I gave him that $800 within hours of him asking for it.

After I got the money...he never called again.

All depends on level of trust and the person's ability to pay. If there is a good reason for the loan and they show evidence that they have a plan to pay it or a reason for why there is a timing gap on their income, go for it. I would also casually expect some sort of payment for the trouble, even if just some free drinks or a meal.

I occasionally lend money to a degenerate gambler who has a high income. He's good for it, he's just a degenerate. He always throws me a bone for doing so

if he stacked up an extra 7k in debt this year alone, his money is clearly disappearing somewhere and all this loan is gonna do is make the creditors disappear for another 30 days. he has no intention of paying anyone involved, he just wants to float debt from person to person and he's already in way over his head

fuk that. that money is good as gone the second you hand it to him and so is that friendship

Just tell him you are struggling as well and that you can give him 100-200 bucks but no need to pay it back, its just a gift. If he bitches or asks for more or whatever, then dont give him **** and cut him off your life already.

Why? There's plenty of situations where money lending makes sense. When I got my first real job out of college after a long stretch of having nothing, one of my best friends let me live in his damn house on credit and I paid him back a month or two later

With my last roommate, he got a job at my firm but was short on the deposit money and everything else at the beginning. Just made a receivable tracker with a bit of interest and all worked out just fine.

Better rule is to not lend out what you can't afford to lose

No but it was never a loan. I simply offered to give him the money as a gift and did what i could at that time to help him out. So i never asked for it back either.
It wasn't about the money even though i gave him everything i had. It just bothered me that he spent it on a gaming console so it wasn't an emergency.
And it's not like i couldn't have used that money for myself. But lesson learned.

if a friend really needs money and it wont hurt you then I say give it
BUT

not if it is a friend looking for a hand out, a friend who isnt trying to get money on their own, a friend who has already squandered money on stupid **** like expensive vehicles they could sell, gambling, drugs and alcohol, stock trading, etc....

If the friend legitimately is working or trying to work as much as possible, living within their means, has nothing to sell, and has bills needing to be paid, then yeah.
