No brother - keep going. Your ego 'sense of self' will form from the formless and you will see why it exists.

Excellent. I practice in the methodology of S.N. Goenka. I learned the method at the retreat, never having really meditated in my life (it was just a sham until that point, really).

One of the "rules" you are taught there during the retreat is to refrain from talking about your experience there in any detail. I'm considered a "senior student" but still have a lot more to learn.

Once COVID is over I'll volunteer to serve at a center in NY. That'd be my next step.

Sorry I missed your post above - nice to meet another Vipassana practitioner. I really hope you do go to the retreat someday. I really mean it when I say it was life altering to me.

You don't need a retreat bro. It's the only skill that actually truly exists. In fact, it's not even that of a skill - it's that of your natural state yet you've been too distracted to notice.

Here's an exercise:Everything you do, fully use your concentration. For example: You're eating something? Now embrace and enjoy it fully. You're at the gym? Now truly focus on burning your muscles instead of trying to do reps.

Now be aware of where this source of concentration -where this energy originates as well. Then you will be more conscious of the unconscious the more you tap into this. You'll soon realize that this concentration is always there - even at a fully relaxed state. You ARE this act of 'concentration' itself.

It is an important part of my life. It has been transformative for sure. Here are some recommendations.

Books:
Waking Up by Dr. Sam Harris
The Power of Now by Eckart Tolle
The Art of Stopping Time (I forget the author)

Apps:
Waking Up
Headspace

YT
Fearless Soul
The School of Life
Rupert Spira
Allen Watts

There is a chit ton of information out there man. Making this thread was a good start for you. I view meditation like this....

We go to the gym to increase our physical abilities. Strength, speed, endurance, etc. Just like our physical bodies, our brains need exercise too. Just like physical exercise, most people do not do it. Just like physical exercise, you won’t see results for a while. Just like physical excessive, it can be a chore at first. There will be periods of times varying in length when you simply don’t do it. Once you start to notice results, just like physical exercise, it will motivate you to keep going.

There is so much research out there to support claims of increased standard of living as a result of meditation. Physiological effects like decreased BP, and tissue regeneration. Cognitive effects like increased emotional control, memory. Etc.

I love it man.

I would love to go to a retreat.

Read some of the philosophy greats. Especially from the 17th and 18th centuries.

And I recommend spending time digesting what you have read and thinking about how this applies to your own menta construct. Walking it off helps lot and you will find yourself sleeping better over time.

Good luck.

No. I've tried it in many forms and it's not for me. I have other tools that work well.

I would think that working with a licensed therapist, specifically utilizing cognitive behavioral therapy, may be more beneficial to you in the immediate. By no means am I discouraging you from meditation - it certainly can't hurt - but it is not the first thing I'd run towards if anxiety and panic attacks were significantly affecting my life.

Snarkily, every person I know in real life who makes meditation a public part of their life is a complete weirdo. They are people working way too hard at just existing.

Yeah you’re right. Why would you want
To naturally fix your stress/depression/anxiety when you can easily take harmful drugs that only mask it rather than fix it

This. It's your natural state. But you've been distracted by everything else.

But again, you're not doing anything wrong by not meditating. You're distracting yourself for a reason. And this distraction is a part of life itself. If life ever gets overwhelming it is pretty nice to melt into that headspace and know that it's all a game

I'd have to agree. These same people that don't bathe for months and go on retreats to drink their own piss.

You don't actually NEED meditation. It doesn't matter how deep you get like that SilenceSpeaks dude was so afraid of. The point is you're ALREADY there. You just have to remove the clutter

I didn't mention drugs, nor have I ever known of a therapist who would prescribe them. It's wonderful that meditation works for you, but your prickliness is certainly curious. I think the marketing department at meditation inc. needs to find a different spokesperson.

What you mean by "actually practice"? Personally I don't use apps and have never been on a retreat. I do 15-20 minutes of focusing on my breathe and watching thoughts come and go.

It has worked pretty well so far and lead to less attachment to my thoughts. But if there's a better way then please aware us.

You don't need to practice ****.

The point is just to be aware - things like negative thoughts and how they weigh you down. It's like incels getting rejected by a girl and constantly thinking - "I'm not good enough. She was ugly anyway. I'm 30 and virgin wut do. Time to go on misc and complain. It's cuz they want Chad." And constantly repeating that to themselves - which creates an identity (victim complex) all on its own. Most of them are unaware they do that. Maybe you do the same thing but thinking other things?

So if we are distracted, and not aware, without practice, how do we become less distracted and more aware?

Just choose right now to do those things, then it’s all good?

Yup, that's all it takes, just beingaware. Which is practically the most effortless thing in the world.

For example, you're typing on the misc - become completely immersed and entirely focused on what you're doing - how the keyboard feels, your thoughts as you're typing, etc. I don't even have to list all of the sensations involved - because you're already doing it. The key is to shift that awareness to make your subconscious conscious. How often do you do things without thinking about it? It's like the negative thoughts I mentioned - you are thinking those negative thoughts but yet some people are running on autopilot in a way that these negative thoughts are so normal they don't notice them - and think it's a part of them

Being aware takes practice. We can’t just gain focus and concentration by “willing” it.

There are always seemingly infinite sensations and informations about your surrounding environment and thoughts that you are not paying attention to. You can think about touch, scent, and smell, but I’m confident right now, you are not aware of the angular and/or linear acceleration being detected by your inner ears for example. With respect to thoughts, you have had many different, unrelated thoughts, even since just starting to read this post.

This seems like a weird thing to disagree on to me.

I guess the way I view it is, being aware, is practicing being aware. Because we are not. No matter how “in this moment” we think we are, our brains still wander. When you take the time to be aware, (as you seem to be doing right now, feeling the keyboard and keeping an eye on your thoughts), that is practicing being aware. I guess I don’t see the difference between practicing it and doing it.

My favorite form of meditation is sitting in front of a mirror, and trying to see my reflection as another person. It is the only face in the room I see at the time, it is physically separated from my own face by distance. I try to remove all personal biases about my own image, etc. Like you said, doing this inhibits significant disassociation. Only thing is, I love it.

I addressed this in an earlier post - Yes, you can practice all you want - and we are conditioned to believe it this way. We are actually this 'act of concentration itself' - what is often referred to asconsciousness.

Yes, we can't "will it." In fact, it's the complete opposite - it's more aboutletting go. But we choose to let certain things run automated to have an experience - like your example of "the angular and/or linear acceleration being detected by your inner ears" or your internal processes.

And we don't ever truly let go - because this existence is the creation of our own angels and demons in which we derive our pleasure and pain. Much like a heart beat.

And when we truly let go then comes the realization that we are empty and void. We desperately cling to our existence so that we may escape from this realization of emptiness - that we don't exist at all. We are everything and nothing at the same time - the emptiness wishing to cling to its own existence.

So to answer your question, there comes a point where you "stop trying" and "stop making a conscious effort" and you just "are". You are the effortless creation and everything is consciousness.

I understand that. I don’t know why I got so caught up on the word “practicing”. Your post reminded of something Allen Watts said about stopping thinking.

“The first rule is don’t try to. Because if you do, you will be like someone trying to make rough waters smooth, and all that will do is stir it up. So, in the same way as a muddy turbulent pool quiets itself when left alone, you have to know how to leave your mind alone. It will quiet itself.”

I haven’t really talked to anyone else who subscribed to this idea, that our existence is an illusion. To me, trying to understand this is as liberating as it is “scary”.
“The stories and information posted here are artistic works of fiction and falsehood. Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.“

PS: Don't eat poop, just don't let the idea of it stop you from living life to its fullest.

So yeah the effects of meditation/awareness are still lingering for me and that was years ago. In fact I think that was in
I feel this. I became fairly proficient at meditation, and in real life, you do not want to connect with EVERYTHING. Some people and experiences truly do hurt and require resistance.

Maybe because I tried this during the wrong time in my life, when I was going through trauma and I tried meditation for relief because everyone always recommends that.

Went straight into awareness/depersonalization/derealization and that was the last thing I needed during that time. What I needed was more grounded practical normal stuff just in regular life. Like the gym and talking to friends etc.

I think it can work to travel in and out if you have a very stable identity and strong sense of self. But mine is diffuse and so it was easily dissolved in meditation and hard to get back solidly together.
Try what I suggested instead of laying in the abyss -"Rather when you're doing something - increase the intensity of your concentration - that'll do wonders for your mind, rather than wasting time closing your eyes and ending up going to sleep. This act alone will expand your consciousness, the goal of meditation".

Being fully present will do wonders for your mental health
