He takes a right on a red, which is legal I think, goes a bit fast, and then the 28 Days Later zombies swarm him, one casually riding a white scooter. But I can't tell if his driving was intentional or careless.

That's what I was wondering, how tf do you miss that close....... I also thought maybe he shot up in the air to try and intimidate him then pointed it later at the guy in which he returned fire. That would sort of explain the pausing between the shots.

He bumped the gas pedal to scare them, and then a bunch of protesters rushed him and surrounded the car, then the driver started shooting.
This and in all honesty he probably did fear for him life the second they touched the car. I think shooting in the air would have been enough but there have been some famous cases where someone got an automatic 10 year sentence for firing a gun to shoot in the air to scare off an attacker. The reasoning is if you really thought you were in imminent danger you would have pointed the gun at them.
