BRB no, we want all the cards inourhand.
CA is a cuckified state and every state representative should be hung from a lamppost for trying to convince 5yo kids that they're little girls trapped in a boy's body.... that being said, anything that takes ammo away from the employer in this stupid fukkin game is a net positive IMO.

If I know what your salary history is, you have zero leverage in a negotiation. I wouldn't ask, but I would ask what your salary expectations are.
-----------
Example.
OP makes 100k at a software firm.
Interview at new company - they REALLY like OP, think he is perfect for the role, his skillset is relevant, and they are having trouble finding people at his caliber
Offer him 120k
He says no - I only will work for you for over 200k
"well thats a more than 100% increase on your salary......"
"Ok fine, you can try and find someone else then, my offer is firm". OP will legit walk away because he has other companies also wanting to hire him badly.
Company realizes they will have to waste another 3 months interviewing new candidates
Company gets CFO to approve a 225-250k pay band (at end of day 100k extra is nothing to most companies).
Matches OPs offer and OP accepts

I guess the answer here is to get in demand skills.

In CA employers are required to tell you the salary range for the position as well.

People would be better off developing wanted SKILLS than studying negotiating tactics. Most people that complain about salary questions/histories don't have truly desired skills yet.

Most people don't like negotiating but the offer stage is the strongest bargaining position you'll ever be at your job so load up on requirements imo

it's kind of a bullchit question, but i wanted to see if what we were offering would be plausibly accepted

I don't see a reason why we need a law for this since we have vast information about job titles and salaries in the internet. It would have made more sense 20 years ago

I mean, if you (since you mention Big 4) want to go to one of the hiring "summits", all they are going to do there is try to low-ball people to come in and do those 80+ hours for pittance pay. Probably burn you out after a few years. Then they rinse and repeat.
As someone who sits on interview panels - we know what our range is, and we have looked at peoples' CVs. If someone is "overqualified", the person isn't invited for an interview. If the person is "underqualified" - the same. Never have we said after the fact "the guy was working at a video store part time during his undergrad so instead of 65K starting let's offer him 40K since for sure it's a step up". That isn't how it works.

I have no problems with states enacting laws that prohibit companies for asking for salary history. What a person made at their previous position has no bearing on the position they’re applying for.
Next up, they need to make it so salaries are adjusted yearly for inflation.

That was the whole of the ban, to force employers to ask what their expectations are.

I know some companies hire a consultant firm that puts their salary info into a database and everyone who wants this info also.hsd their info put into the database. It's probably only ****ty companies that use it because I got lowballed when companies use that.
