One mother and activist, Lynn Meagher, spoke at length about losing both her son and daughter to what she perceives to be a cult.
Several speakers had me completely on board with what they were saying, but I'm still noodling on the idea that euphemistic phrases like "trans identifying males" or "trans women" shouldn't even be entertained. One particular speaker believed that adopting these terms deliberately obfuscates and confuses, and argued that women in particular should rely on their own perception and not be coerced into using this fake language. She referenced Andrea Dworkin's work aroundthe "male power of naming," and that very time we say "trans women" or even "trans identifying" we are supporting every bit of bullchit and harm being done to us and others. Instead, she advocated for "men who demand I recognize them as women." Not so sure that I agree TBH. Thots?

You've been attacking masculinity while not taking responsibility for this identity rhetoric and you're here now with a straight face acting like it has nothing to do with third wave feminism.
Was feminism hijacked? sure, but acting like it wasn't just puts you in the same boat as them.

I think you misunderstand what I mean (or what Dworkin meant) about the male power of naming. Men are demanding that we change words for their feelings. Those words have meaning. Men knew what women meant when women were not allowed to vote. Men knew that giving words like chinamen and savages had meaning. There is power in naming, and narcissistic men know that.

I tried to furiously take notes, here's what I got out of it:
There is no test to determine what their gender is. It's always perceived, astate of mind. Anatomical reasons for gender are failures. Comparing brain structure to average female versus trans woman is futile, thee is no female brain in a male body and vice versa because gender is not a biologic state.
Denying affirmation leads to increased suicide = myth.
There is brain plasticity. Our brains get molded by our experiences which are inevitably gendered experiences. Human brain plasticity is really overlooked, it's something that makes humans unique from other mammals because it's possible throughout our lives and actually causes physical changes... So even comparisons to other animals re:gender are in a sense false comparisons due to brain plasticity, and responding to society/culture. Brain scans can't account for the social aspect.
The other endocrinologist mostly spoke about his experience detransitioning. Also, it was after 10pm by that point, I was barely hanging on.

The question that should be at the center of this discussion: "Does transitioning cause better psychological wellbeing and fewer years lost to suicide"I still don't know. To me a perfectly reasonable question, but how come we are still stuck with very low quality evidence?

I don't think there's a real need for gender expression outside of potentially transgenderism. The fact that gender identity exists beyond transgenderism with a plethora of arbitrary choices and labels is enough to tell me that it isn't really about gender identity. It's about something else. What that something else is is variable and is up for discussion. But I don't think there's a valid need to identify as one of the 64+ genders. Trying to rationalize it would just be pure mental gymnastics.

Only question I need to ask is why did you actually do it?
You had to have gotten paid a substantial amount to listen to the mentally handicapped talk about their reasons as to why they're so fuked up in the head

i was against all this trans chit until i found that feminazis aka terfs like the OP are scared of tranny rights taking away from theirs and drowning out their voice
anything that threatens radical feminism is alright with me, as they have proven to be the most destructive force to our civilization in the very short time since their inception
and 0.5% trannies don't really affect anybody, as long as we don't allow kids to transition, trannies and all the other abc people that threaten radical feminists have my full support

Show me a father of a teenage daughter who would be okay with a grown man who is mid transition enter a women's dressing room, stripping naked and showering. Until this situation happens I don't care what someone does with their life, just don't flaunt it in my face 24/7.

Cristan Williams: You spoke about the surgical intervention many trans people undergo as a “very brave transformation.” Can you talk about that?
Judith Butler: It is always brave to insist on undergoing transformations that feel necessary and right even when there are so many obstructions to doing so, including people and institutions whos seek to pathologize or criminalize such important acts of self-definition. I know that for some feels less brave than necessary, but we all have to defend those necessities that allow us to live and breathe in the way that feels right to us. Surgical intervention can be precisely what a trans person needs – it is also not always what a trans person needs. Either way, one should be free to determine the course of one’s gendered life.
CW: I think it’s safe to say that many gender theorists are controversial in one way or another. Some have lumped your work together with the work of gender theorists such as Sheila Jeffreys, who wrote:
[Transsexual surgery] could be likened to political psychiatry in the Soviet Union. I suggest that transsexualism should best be seen in this light, as directly political, medical abuse of human rights. The mutilation of healthy bodies and the subjection of such bodies to dangerous and life-threatening continuing treatment violates such people’s rights to live with dignity in the body into which they were born, what Janice Raymond refers to as their “native” bodies. It represents an attack on the body to rectify a political condition, “gender” dissatisfaction in a male supremacist society based upon a false and politically constructed notion of gender difference… Recent literature on transsexualism in the lesbian community draws connections with the practices of sadomasochism.
Can you talk about the ways in which your views might differ?
JB: I have never agreed with Sheila Jeffreys or Janice Raymond, and for many years have been on quite the contrasting side of feminist debates. She appoints herself to the position of judge, and she offers a kind of feminist policing of trans lives and trans choices. I oppose this kind of prescriptivism, which seems me to aspire to a kind of feminist tyranny.
If she makes use of social construction as a theory to support her view, she very badly misunderstands its terms. In her view, a trans person is “constructed” by a medical discourse and therefore is the victim of a social construct. But this idea of social constructs does not acknowledge that all of us, as bodies, are in the active position of figuring out how to live with and against the constructions – or norms – that help to form us. We form ourselves within the vocabularies that we did not choose, and sometimes we have to reject those vocabularies, or actively develop new ones. For instance, gender assignment is a “construction” and yet many genderqueer and trans people refuse those assignments in part or in full. That refusal opens the way for a more radical form of self-determination, one that happens in solidarity with others who are undergoing a similar struggle.
One problem with that view of social construction is that it suggests that what trans people feel about what their gender is, and should be, is itself “constructed” and, therefore, not real. And then the feminist police comes along to expose the construction and dispute a trans person’s sense of their lived reality. I oppose this use of social construction absolutely, and consider it to be a false, misleading, and oppressive use of the theory.
CW: Recently, Gloria Steinem wrote:
So now I want to be unequivocal in my words: I believe that transgender people, including those who have transitioned, are living out real, authentic lives. Those lives should be celebrated, not questioned. Their health care decisions should be theirs and theirs alone to make. And what I wrote decades ago does not reflect what we know today as we move away from only the binary boxes of “masculine” or “feminine” and begin to live along the full human continuum of identity and expression.
Would you comment on Steinem’s statement?
JB: I agree completely that nothing is more important for transgender people than to have access to excellent health care in trans-affirmative environments,to have the legal and institutional freedom to pursue their own lives as they wish, and to have their freedom and desire affirmed by the rest of the world. This will happen only when transphobia is overcome at the level of individual attitudes and prejudices and in larger institutions of education, law, health care, and kinship.

What the actual fuk is lived reality. As opposed to what, exactly? Cracks me up anytime I hear "lived experiences" or "lived reality." Last I checked, we're all living here. I don't police trans lives or choices, because I'm not a raging narc. Adults can do whatever they'd like to do with their bodies. That does not change their sex.

You are just as mentally ill as the trans people with whom you've become obsessed. I think it's time for you to take stock of your own life and really assess what's wrong that you feel the need to do these things, and fix that chit... Cause this ain't it buddy boyo lady.

my intuition is to agree w you, but i feel like some of these feminists can see the writing on the wall, that dying on this hill is the path to #cancelled. if these institutions are as endemic as you imagine then combating then by saying women have ovaries as opposedsubsumingseems like a waste of energy
sometimes you seem to say, one one hand, everyone should stop whining, while on the other hand this is a mans world- this seems inconsistent

ok i have a more deeper intuition (im a moron) that everything is comodified, which is to say everything is a product to be sold. trannies have their dicks cut off, theres a product. tranny flags, theres a product. you know how don draper is like "this one's TOASTED" and buddy says they are all toasted and don says it doesnt matter. thats whats happening with all these cancellations. THAT company is transphobic and we arent.
so if there's such a thing as a "return to ""normative"" values" then there has to be a market for it. it seems like theres probably a huge market for it, but that has to be the approach. "that company is fukking insane"
the abstraction layer of capitalism is far more fundamental than any social movement, thats what im tryna say

I actually have read people who think that way, beyond the liberals / women's bodies comment above. I think it was Melissa Farley but I could be wrong about that. Just looked her up, dead ringer for Merry Berry!

I also dispute this notion that there is no difference between a male and a female brain. I've seen studies that showed levels of various proteins were different. And ofc male brains are generally much larger due to head size alone. If a machine learning algorithm can cluster brains into male or female with 90% accuracy, then clearly there are differences. There are strong theoretical reasons why there ought to be a difference between a male and a female brain. There is simply no way these differences are merely plastic responses.
For example, the behavior of baby boys and girls generally differs substantially. I know this is a hotly contested issue in science central to whether trans really exist. More research needs to come out to really show a smoking gun difference but there is good reason to believe it is there. You can find doctors who disagree and doctors who agree.
