I do too and I always deadlift in sleeves. The only thing about the sleeves is that the bar clips the bottom edge of the sleeve on the way up sometimes.

With a max pull, if it hits the bottom of that sleeve just right, it could slow down your momentum just a hair. And when it's an absolute max pull, that may be enough to miss a lift.

I'll leave them off the next time then. Seeing that ~500 lbs max estimate you wrote above, makes me wonder if I should wait a few more weeks. Wanna make sure I absolutely have it, and it's not too much of a grinder when I attempt it

Louie Simmons always says never miss a deadlift because it's too much of a confidence killer.

So yeah, maybe go 475x2 next week, and then in two weeks hit 500.

try hitting some heavier singles before going from 455x3 to 500

people forget that one rep maxing is a skill you need to practice and get good with as well. There's some people that can easily rep say 405 for say 5 reps on the deadlift but fail to lift something like 435 which they should easily be able to hit in theory. The weight just feels a lot different and heavier if you aren't used to the sensation. For most people if they aren't used to singles they fail 1-2 inches off the floor, but once they get passed that they'll be easily able to get the rep. Seen this happen so many times.

I'd practice hitting some singles in the 465-485 area for one or two weeks. Willing to bet you if you can do that you'd probably be able to hit 500 comfortable and perhaps even more than that if you are feeling ballsy. It's also a mental thing where if you can hit a heavy single comfortably, it will give you a lot more confidence.

I rarely attempt a weight that I'm not at least 90% confident I would be able to hit.

can even treat it like a deadlift only meet on the day you max. maybe 445 first attempt, 475 second, then rip it for 500. Take all the rest you need between attempts

Thanks for this sooby brah, probably what I'll end up doing. I'll stay in <500 lbs and get used to some heavy singles and attempt 500 in couple weeks.

You probably can for one if those were that easy though. I'd say you should probably prep for a 1rm though. Make sure you have rest, eaten enough food, etc.
Plenty of times I have hit or missed my max because of those things.

I think so, I hit a much slower 455x3 earlier this month and peaked at 475. so im thinking you have at least 490.

i think you have it, my max is 540 at 6' 195lbs

probably unpopular opinion but id like to start around 405 with singles.

405, rest, 405, rest, 405, rest working on explosiveness, then
425
445
475
495
515 etc

reason is, some days you feel on and some days you feel off. ramping up with singles lets you read how your body is feeling that day

Deadlift is a push. The heavy weight is pulling you down. To satisfy ego you gotta do it right and have control of the weight from beginning until ending. Just handling 400 without it pulling you down is an impressive feat of itself. Save 500 for later.

Nice pull, Ash.

I mean Drew and Sooby both gave some excellent advice. I suck at 1rm, and it is something that I am also not practicing much out of fear of injury.

May be worth practicing some heavier pulls before the 500 as Sooby said.

I had never seen the calculation Drew mentioned.

Repped for a good lifting thread.

I think I went from 455x5 to 475x3 to 495x1 then 515x1 within 4 weeks of somewhat peaking to the 515lbs. I think I had the 530lb I attempted after but tweaked my glute.

So I would say yes, but I would do 1 or 2 more weeks before the attempt. Just to get down pulling technically for 1 rep.

Looks good though brah. Strong
