Saturday Night Bench Pressing with DrewDarden

This is the most I’ve worked up to since I injured both pecs a few months back. Felt good and essentially no pain.

Warmup -
Stretching 10 min
Abs 3x15

Bench Press
Warmups from 45-275
300
315
325

185x10 +60 lb. chain

My buddy worked up to 405. Not shown, but I could post a video if anybody was interested.

What's the chain for? To take some weight away at the bottom of the motion?

Yeah pretty much. Lighter at the bottom, heavier at the top. Not very different from bands. I like the chains more in this regard though. It does have a different feeling than bands. More natural.

I've never tried chains but I've always been strong on bench press while my squat a DL are lagging.. I struggle on the lower portion of the squat. You ever use the chain for squats?

Yeah and I really like it for squat too.

The way I use them usually is to do my top sets, and then throw the chain on once I’m done with the main working sets. So for squat I might do 4x2 with my working weight, then take a plate or two off, add the chain, and do some reps.

Nice, once i set up my home gym I need to get myself some of those bars too. I see people using one for front squat we don't have out here.

How crucial is the actual warmup phase of a compound lift? I just skip past it and go straight to the lift

It won't bother you when you are young.. after many years you can start having major pain in your knees and hips.

From age 15-30, I did the same thing. To me, 135x10 with whatever lift I was doing for the day was a warm-up. Now I’m like the Tin Man, and I need more oiling up LOL.

But I didn’t even show you the rest of my warm up in the original post because it is just redundant, but here’s what I really did:

Warmup -
Stretching 10 min
Abs 3x15

Bench Press
45x15
95x10
155x5
205x5
245x3
275x1
300x1
315x1
325x1

185x10 +60 lb. chain

my theory on this is that by the time I do like 3 sets of 10 of using minimal weight, wouldn't my chest already be exhausted by the time I'm able to hit my heavy weights for strength reps?

Well if pecs were the only thing at play, I’d say yes. But even then you would probably want/need more of a warm-up as you get older. Because things just start to get rusty.

But I use a fair bit of leg drive in my bench, and as you can see my legs are spread wide to cover more of a base. So I have to warm up the groin and low back and hips. That’s what I’m stretching at the beginning of the work out. And when I do those pull down abs, I am stretching out my low back too.

The thought of not warming up on bench makes my shoulders hurt. Anyway, warming up primes the CNS and builds confidence. I would for sure be weaker jumping straight into work sets.

The safety squat bar and a rounded/cambered bar (I have the Yukon Bar) are my favorite alternatives to a straight bar.

It's elbows for me. Any pressing aggravates my elbows unless I warm up.

Dips also wreck my elbows and sternum unless I start slowly with singles and work up to reps.

No idea why it hurts my sternum.

Anyway, solid lifts Drew!

Do your future self a favor and start now brah. At minimum I would say do a few sets of band pullaparts or face pulls prior to any pressing. You may not feel like it's necessary now, but it will be at some point, and the sooner you start taking precautions the longer you can lift without pain.

I'll do volume for a couple of weeks then go for a 1rm. Hoping to push 300x1 feet up press. Have done 275x2 feet up before.

Yeah it certainly wasn’t a maximum effort. I’m still a little gunshy from the pec tweaks/injuries. I think the strength is there for quite a bit more, but I’m leaving a little in the tank for the coming weeks as a test things out.

Currently running a Wendler template based on 5x5.

Feels good to have flat bench back in after focusing on incline DB for the past few months.

Cool. I did 531 myself for years (10 years ago). It was great for me.
