I have some family who live in a rural town.

Not. My renters are all travelling workers at a refinery. Boilermakers, welders, pipefitters, electricians. They can spend $400 a week to stay in a motel, or $400 a week to stay in one of my furnished houses. My larger houses are $600, $800 and $1000. Typical stay is 1-3 months until the job is done, then they move to the next job.

Here is how I run my racket. All the contractors that come to work at the refinery have to take a drug screen. My official day job is giving the drug screens. So I meet them before they even start work and give them a sales pitch. The 2 selling points are the full kitchen and the washer/dryer. The fact that the bedrooms are decorated like Hugh Hefner's mansion is just a side point, same thing with the Smart TV in the living room.

Lived in the suburbs my whole life, hard to imagine anything else. Couldn't do a big downtown city, way too crowded. Couldn't do small town life, seems too boring.

I'm really torn on this. On one hand, I grew up in a relatively small town(~5000), but haven't lived there since high school. Ever since, I've lived in a college town of that gets pretty quiet in Summer, but within the span of a week I get to see my location go from being being relatively quiet to crazy and buzzing with activity. This happened within the last 10 days actually.

Things I've noticed: My test and anxiety both go up a lot when there are people around. As long as I'm a single guy, I don't think I could ever live in a small town where choice of females is very scarce. If I had a family I could maybe consider it, just because you're mostly doing family stuff and not really looking for entertainment outside of family anyways. If I owned a home out in the woods somewhere, I'd probably become a big alcoholic and go 6 months or more at a time without having sex. If you live out in the country, it's just kind of reeling in the years, and it's comfortable but not something I could realistically consider doing right now.

My mom made a killing renting out campers to the traveling workers when they were building the coal plant 20 miles from her house. I met some very interesting characters. Also one of my best friends was in Afghanistan at the time and I saw his wife's vehicle over at one of the guys who was renting from my mom. She was 6 months pregnant when he came back from his 9 month tour. That was a fun conversation to have...

60k can feel like NYC if you were in a town that's 5x5 miles, there's a lot of them in the midwest like that

In the ideal rural location you can swim, fish, hike, shoot in your backyard, and ride ATVs while not having to deal with Karens or Jareds.

He was actually going to raise the child as his own and try to work things out. I was mind blown that he didn't straight up leave her the day he got back and tried everything in the book to make him come to his senses. Not only was she pregnant by someone else she had spent every dime of his overseas hazard pay on fast food and clothes. I forgot to mention she was a stay at home who has never worked. He eventually divorced her when she started cheating again about 6 months later.
