Krav Maga is mostly drilling cuz most people can’t handle sparring with it from what I’ve seen.
Might as well just do a MMA gym so you can get a good mix
Being able to spar is going to be the best development for learning how to actually fight.
Problem with a lot of boxing gyms is only people trying to take fights are allowed to spar a lot of times, a lot of Muay Thai doesn’t spar that often etc..
Should be able to get some practice fights in a MMA gym.

In BJJ, sprawling is probably the technique I’d use the most in a street fight. Add in some submission wrestling with a sit out, or throwing ankle hooks in to prevent a body slam.
I’m interested in the Krav Maga aspect to defend against a knife attack. But realistically, I’m not trying to fight unarmed against a knife and would just run.
Really, there’s just so many variables that it’s to hard account for.
What do you do if you’re with your girlfriend/wife? You can’t just run, because you’ll be faster than her and she’ll get caught, raped, and killed. So you have to fight long enough for her to escape safely and still allow for you to run off if need be.
What happens if they’re multiple attackers (likely)?
What happens if they’re using bats, chains, bricks, skateboards as weapons (likely)?
A lot of variables, and a lot of them no matter how much training you have, there’s a good chance you’ll still lose to a knife or a gun.

One of my issues though is that I wear workout shorts a lot, and I’m not sure how I can conceal carry without it being noticeable in those type of shorts.

Boxing. Its the most effective self defense art for anyone remotely athletic. It will improve fitness. It keeps you on your feet. Teaches lateral movement. Head movement. Etc.
You can spend years trying to learn kicks, knees, elbows, punches, etc. or you can just focus on your fitness and on punching and get a really effective skillset, really fast.
-Guys that intentionally take it to the ground because they are a grappler.
-Guys that have no training and end up wrassling around on the ground (Larger/stronger guy will always win this).
-Guys that get knocked the fukk out and wake up on the ground.
I'm a cop and worked security in a club area for a long time. Taking someone to the ground is hands down the easiest way to control them. Problem is, it becomes a liability if you don't have people watching your back/keeping others off of you. Even a girlfriend can walk up and kick you in the face while you are occupied with their man and you might be completely fukked. I won't even get into if another male steps in against you. If you are defending yourself you want to be on your feet and mobile. Aware of your surroundings. Able to move. Especially if you also carry a gun, because at that point rolling around on the ground is asking for that gun to get taken away and used on you.
BJJ is the best thing to know if the fight ends up on the ground. But going to the ground should be avoided when possible. Last resort sort of thing. Boxing is the best thing to know in general. In my opinion.

BJJ is big on ground game, leverage, how a smaller trained man can beat a larger un trained or less trained man.
The last place you want to be in a street fight is on the ground.
I vote for Krav Maga.

Krav Maga would be a good one, but good luck finding any legit place in America.
Muay Thai, Sambo, BJJ.
BJJ is last resort for when theytake you down though.

Western Boxing, the LAST thing you want to do is roll around on the ground in a street fight. There rarely 1 on 1 encounters and you can be a Black Belt in BJJ. But good luck getting kicked by other dudes homies.

for self defense as adults probably adding muay thai would be the most complete thing

You can’t pick just one if you want your degree of confidence to be aligned with reality
Most street fights happen with multiple potential people against you. Men get more cocky and escalate when they have their friends backing them up especially if you’re alone. A lot of people are ****ing jackals and will jump in if you start winning and cheap shot you
Even if it is 1:1 you may not know the following until it’s too late:
- what the persons background is. They could be a wrestler, a BJJ blue belt, a boxer, etc.
- if they have a weapon
- if they are on drugs and won’t respond to normal things that disable people
You need wrestling, BJJ, maybe judo
You need Muay Thai or boxing
You need some weapons training
You need to be able to run faster than them for longer than them.
Or you could just pepper spray the group, laugh and run away
The more you get into it the more you will be humbled by how dangerous some people are and how vulnerable you are. You will also have nothing to prove that you haven’t proved in the gym.

If you are experienced, the last place you want to be is on the ground when you dont know how many attackers and from what angles they could be coming from. So in this case you wouldnt take it to the ground on purpose like most BJJ experts would.

Trying to gouge an eye after you have been thrown onto the concrete isn't the best play. Taking someone down and choking them out also isn't the best play, but BJJ teaches controlling an opponent and if you are locked up and unable to run away.

Controlling one opponent correct? What do you do if there are 3 and you are cornered? shoot a single leg?

Judo or wrestling.
Unlike striking arts judo and wrestling have a scalable response. What looks better to a judge. Punching someone in the face or tripping a guy coming at you?

The OP asked what is the best modality.....meaning 1 martial art to study i believe is what he is asking.
I do believe its great to know BJJ. Heck, you should be well rounded in all disciplines (de-escalation, shooting a gun, MMA) but if i had to choose one, it wouldnt be BJJ.
And if you look at my response, I wasnt angling for a striking modality (one hit knock out), i was angling for a knowledge of efficiently controlling multiple attackers from your feet then getting the heck out of there.

BJJ? If you’re on the floor you already lost
Boxing and BJJ thats another story
Boxing and BJJ thats another story
-Some people say good things come to those who wait, truth is, good things come to those who work..... who work later.....who work harder...... who are willing to go further than anyone else to get them. If you're waiting for good things to come to you, you'll be waiting for a pretty long time.

Obviously MMA, they start with a solid boxing foundation, but they at least will give you quick grappling fundamentals as well.
Being strong and fast is even more important than fighting skill. And you should of course carry something, like knife and pepper spray if you can’t carry a gun. Even a bright solid flashlight is better than nothing.
Just remember, in addition to your fighting training, add headbutts, palm strikes, and groin kicks, practice those on B.O.B., and condition your knuckles, if you can’t do jumping push-ups on your fists on cement you will run a high risk of breaking your hands in a street fight, good news is it’s really easy to learn to do that if you go slow, safely, and gradually.

The misc must require this topic to be posted at least once or month or something. That being said...
There are many martial arts that are good for self-defense. Just be aware that each discipline has a lot of mickey mouse versions which divert from the true martial art. Finding a genuine practictioner in each discipline can be difficult and don’t put your faith into one particular school just because it says “bjj” or “krav maga” on thr window.
Many of these places are basically fitness studios that sprinkle martial arts in. I personally don’t need to be doing 500 situps and pushups as a warm up before I learn actual techniques. I go to a gym to train for strength/general fitness and I expect to learn technique and spar in a fighting gym.

The answer is wrestling and boxing/kickboxing. Any other answer is from someone a. Who has never actually been in a lot of fights b. Someone who hasnt watch the ufc or mma in general c. Both.
Also cant understate the importance of cardio. Watch a million fights on youtube. Go participate in some sparring yourself. Fatigue will have you on the ground getting stomped out

I would see about Muay Thai or Wetsern Boxing first for awhile then after a good base I would switch to BJJ.
Especially if you carry and get involved in an entanglement.
