It's sad that there isn't one thing that you could possibly brag about. You don't have money, or a prestigious job, you didn't go to a good school, you don't have a girlfriend, you aren't in good shape, you're not a good troll, you're not independent, you're not funny, or interesting despite your various mental health issues. I gotta hand it to you, most people in your position would have killed themselves long ago, but we all know you wouldn't even do that correctly.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

I can brag about how I control your emotional state. Look at how much you have invested in this thread talking to me.

I don't have emotional states, and I can multitask. You just can't win in life.

So would you consider guys like Donald Trump or Bill Clinton as winning at life?

Wealth, lots of sex, influence and power...

Is this success to you?

Also, do you really think you can buy anything you want?

Of course I'd like to have an attractive woman want me, but at the end of the day, nature is as it is. I won't question it.

Also, apartments suck man. Working sucks too, usually. Commuting sucks. LOL I'm sure sex is nice, but maybe it isn't worth all that trouble unless it were someone really special to me.

That's not my thing, but yes, they are both very successful. What is success to you?

“The effort to understand the universe is one of the very few things that lifts human life a little above the level of farce, and gives it some of the grace of tragedy." - Steven Weinberg

To make that effort within the capacity genetically afforded to me is my life's goal. I value the struggle to know and I seek to do the best I can to understand.

Would it be great to be famous, rich, and have a lot of sex with attractive women? Probably, but if I had that life, I'd have had a completely different perspective and probably wouldn't seek to understand this existence in the same way. I wouldn't trade who I am. I used to want to be someone else, but not anymore. It's like in the matrix. I'd rather have the red pill and see the truth than to live in a docile paradise without the knowledge. In biblical terms, I'd rather side with the serpent and knowledge over paradise and blind subservience. To struggle to comprehend this existence and keep pushing the rock up the hill is a success for me.

I would like to know that feeling of a woman actually wanting me and calling me asking what I want for dinner like you said. But at the end of the day, it's just another frivolous pleasure, and ultimately, a distraction from the reality of existence. That can't be the thing I invest my life's purpose into pursuing. It just can't. Because it would just feel so pointless and empty.

Really, it's not a question of tradies vs stemcels. It's more a question of the economy and society in general becoming overly specialized. In order to do anything of value these days, you must become an expert in a particular discipline. This necessarily means you are forced to miss out on other knowledge. Society doesn't reward generalists as much anymore. Since your job is just 1 thing and you do that for like 30+ years, you end up kind of stuck in your way of thinking. A skilled tradesman gets extensive knowledge and education in his particular trade, but misses out on the general information one would think would be relevant to a general understanding of existence. For a functional democracy, most people ought to be well versed in science, math, history, economics, art, law, psychology, business, trades, war/defense etc. It's impractical for most people to obtain this education while the economy really forces them to specialize.
You seem to be implying that I require some sort of background in order to make this post. You attack my background as a way to somehow invalidate my claim. This is known as an ad hominem. My statement was a simple claim that has been made by many people regarding specialization vs generalization. It has been made by financially successful people as well. I'm not the only person bringing this claim.

I could have no background or credentials whatsoever, make that statement, and it would still be valid. There was no reason to bring up my background except as an attempt to somehow attack the person rather than the point being made. The point still stands. One of the reasons you see a lot of hostility and anti-intellectualism today is that that is a natural consequence of extreme economic specialization. The specialization of knowledge necessarily leads to people being ignorant and distrusting of fields outside their area of expertise.

Ok, you're not financially successful, but are you socially successful? Do you have friends, girls wanting to date you, etc? Are you academically successful? Do you have accolades in any field?

No. And explain how that has anything to do with my original post, shown here.

So what's wrong with what I said?

You can read about the effects of specialization in the economy on politics, education, social welfare, and other areas. It has had positive and negative effects. One of the negative effects is a rise of anti-intellectualism and a distrust of scientists and experts.

I don't have to do anything of value. What I do is irrelevant. The post is claiming that the economy values specialization. Anything of value in modern society usually rewards specialization. Pick any job and I will give you examples.

It seems the wording triggered you. Please try to read and understand what was sad before you comment. And refrain from ad hominems.

You still aren't telling me what is wrong with what I said. Why is it "BS"?

Well for one I'm a generalist in my field, and I make a lot of money knowing a little bit of everything. So clearly your opinion is wrong, but we're willing to give your opinion more weight based on your credentials, but as you have already stated, you have none, not one. So as it stands your opinion is worthless.

What's your field and how are you a generalist? I'm sure I could find basic information from some field that you are grossly unaware of.

Even still, all you have established is that you are a generalist. Cool. So am I. Does the economy value you in general? Clearly not. Our economy promotes specialization over generalization the vast majority of the time. While there may be some niche policy analysis jobs, executive management of labs, and other such careers that require one to be fairly general in knowledge, it is certainly not the norm. Most jobs have a specific role and require a specific set of skills.

The thing is it isn't an opinion. It's a fact. It's a fact that our economy rewards specialization. You can confirm this by looking at wages for jobs and see what types of jobs are most lucrative. You can also consider the nature of a fixed job or role at a company. That itself is a specialization.

What are you basing the bolded on?
Well, usually you need some sort of job right? And usually that means mastering a particular set of skills, right? Are we really debating that the economy rewards specialization?

I'll refine the argument and make it really simple.

1) There is a finite amount of time in a person's lifespan.
2) The person must spend time to obtain knowledge.
3) Our society is organized in such a way that most people get jobs and pursue careers in specific fields.
4) This specialization leads to them mainly focusing their efforts on becoming experts in those fields.
5) Since the time is finite, they necessarily forego education in other fields.
6) As a result, their ignorance of other fields leads to a general level of distrust and an innate level of hostility since people tend to be hostile to things they do not know that might challenge their preconceptions.

This, I think is one of the main sources of anti-intellectualism in the society. We live in a modern economy with sophisticated technology that demands a pretty extreme level of specialization. Our economy is the most specialized it has ever been in human history. This specialization forces people to miss out on an education in other areas. As a result, the average person, being hostile to the unknown and forced to not know things outside his field in order to become better at his own field, will tend to be hostile to experts in fields outside his own area of expertise.

All opinion, you're not a generalist, you don't have a job. You're a welfareist.

Are either of you going to give arguments for why I am wrong?

Are you saying our economy rewards generalization over specialization?

We clearly live in the most specialized economy in human history. It's amazing that you dispute this.

You said what I said was BS. You still haven't explained why. You keep personally attacking me rather than addressing the point I made, which stands. Unless you can show me our economy rewards generalists more than specialists or that people aren't inherently hostile to the unknown, there's really not much to argue about here. What I said pretty much makes perfect sense and is the reality of the situation. I don't see how this can even be disputed.

We live in the most specialized economy in human history. Our technology has become extremely sophisticated and requires an increasing level of specialization. Social roles are stratified and more specialized. Every aspect of our government is more specialized. We have more specific careers than ever before. These are all facts. And my point is simply that the specialization comes at a cost. If one specializes, one must forego general knowledge. Then, of course, people would become more distrusting of experts and specialists in other disciplines. Couple this with social media echo chamber effects and you get waves of anti-intellectualism.
