Strong logic ITT. Trying to use the most basic logic here. Jump throw a ball west as far as you can. Then throw a ball east as far as you can. Based on your logic, you'd throw a ball twice the distance going with earths rotation as opposed to half in the other direction.

this is true btw. This is why baseball teams that play on the west side of the baseball field win a proportionally higher percentage of matches... it's just easier to toss a ball that way. Also why the MLB is redesign their baseball fields to be played north vs south. Probably won't happen tho cuz baseball is dying

My guess is the answer to OP's question is actually very complicated and involves relativity. From the reference frame of the aircraft, the world is actually spinning under it.
The lift effect is real. One piece of evidence is the 'stall' effect when airspeed gets too low, a plane can suddenly drop.

Planes can fly inverted due to the angle of attack - which at high speeds has more to do with keeping a plane in the air than the lift effect

Yep

Had this convo with some friends who were convinced it's because once you're in the sky you no longer move with the earth. That's just false, if there was no wind/air and you were thrown 6 miles upwards you'd fall almost on the exact same spot

I mean the Earth is literally spinning at 1000 mph if that were the case you'd fall and die every time you jumped

no puzzy obviously the atmosphere slows this effect down tremendously but still happens like 1/100000 fraction of it

I have legitimate Questions?

The Earth Spins at approx 1000miles an hour.

If for example Perth ------> Sydney is approx 3 hours difference in time
It takes 4.5 hour to fly there from Perth to Sydney.
Why not just go straight up and wait for the Earth to spin and then drop down reducing travel time down to 3 hours?

Also if the Earth is spinning East to West at approx 1000 miles an hour.......why does it take 4.5 hours to fly West (Perth) to East (Sydney) when the destination is spinning closer to the plane at approx 1000 miiles an hour and the destination is only 2500 miles away?
Why when flying East to West does it take the same amount of time if the destination is spinning away from the plane at approx 1000 miles an hour?

but I've been also thinking about what you said and think about this: ever seen a woman throw a ball and it ends up actually being thrown straight up backwards?
That happens alot because women are weaker than men and if they are throwing west to east the rotation of the earth can move the ball back maybe. Men have too much force so they compensate for the effect

To an observer with a fixed reference frame a little ways from Earth, it would be going 1090mph.

To the person throwing the ball, its going 90mph.

From my small brains' understanding that's relativity in a nutshell, our observations are from a relative reference frame. When something is moving, its speed depends upon where you're looking at it from.Then the speed of light ties it all together by creating a single reference. Light is moving at c no matter what angle or speed you're looking at it from.

If gravity did not exist, and no atmosphere (vacuum), that could be done. I'm thinking gravity also causes the atmosphere to spin with the earth (or be held to it at all) so you might get 2 birds with 1 stone if you got rid of gravity.

Friction with the ground. Same thing happens if you spin an object inside a cloud of smoke (only difference here is that the smoke doesn't stick to it because there isn't enough gravity)

That's exactly how ballistic missiles work - leave the atmosphere, can accelerate to enormous speeds, reach the other side of the world in about an hour. The reason we don't do it is because of the expense of using rocket engines instead of jets - which work outside the atmosphere but have to carry their own oxygen source with them.

You guys are all making the same mistake - thinking about speed relative to some fixed point in space - but which point? The earth is not just spinning but orbiting the sun and the sun orbits the galactic center and galaxies all move relative to each other.

Why not just dig a U-shaped tunnel with a frictionless slide, that way all the momentum gained on the way down would take you right back up to the surface again at your destination

Bournulli couldn't quite explain it. Low pressure forms on the upper side because of faster moving fluid generating lower pressures (though never explains why). But using those ideas, it would indicate the plane would be pushed down hard to the ground if it flew inverted (no matter what angle of attack). So that doesn't explain it fully. Newton explains it in a more complete manner but can't explain why lower pressure area forms.

Gravity might be causing the friction, pulling all the molecules of atmosphere towards the earth so it doesn't dissipate, then the forces of gravity hold it in almost orbit with the earth. With such a large mass generating a lot of gravity, the earth can pull in a thick soup of atmosphere that is viscous like you say

And the earth isn't really spinning that fast if you zoom out. It spins 1 revolution per day. I can imagine smoke staying with a rotating ball at 1 rev per day

Imagine each runway as a massive treadmill, the plane would have to approach 1000 mph in order to take off, because the earth is counterotating at that speed.
