My favorite for EDC is the Buck 284 - there is one on Amazon for $35 but I have bought it twice before for $19. It's a nice blend of quality but not costing so much that I am going to be super pissed if I lose it

Benchmade are good but you pay for the name.
I EDC a Kershaw Scallion and it has been great. Also own Zero Tolerance (boat anchors), Microtechs, a lot of Spydercos, CRKT, etc.

Absolutely can’t stand most spyderco. Serrations taint to tip is ridiculous. That’s a hand saw not a knife.
If you know how to sharpen a knife properly I would get no serrations.
This is my current and the best knife I’ve owned

Really appreciate all of the great input fellas.
Top 3 choices at the moment are ZT 0450, Benchmade 940, and Kershaw Scallion.
ZT and Benchmade because reviews say this is most peoples end all for EDC without going super crazy expensive. Leaning towards one of these two since I've never owned a high end EDC.
Kershaw Scallion because it seems like high quality not at premium price.

looks tacky AF.
Also, never owned a spiderco, but they don't look terrible to me.

I recently bought a smith & wesson knife that has a window breaker on the bottom of it and seat belt cutter on blade. Has a nice feel to it.

I second those who said buy American made if you're looking for anything durable. Anything made in China won't last - these fall apart every time I put too much pressure on it or even slight overuse. The pivot screw is the weakest point and falls apart first. American-made is more durable.

The OP needs it for basic tasks, so whilst its good to support the local economy and buy quality, it may be too over engineered.
In full disclosure, I also like these tools a lot
"The manlet is a savage beast that knows no moral bound. After falling in disgrace to a manmore, a ravaged manlet would not hesitate to come from behind and land a sucker punch/ swing with a rock to the back of a manmore's head. They are ruthless and you need to spend some more time in the gutter to even begin trying to comprehend what goes on in their minds."

For just general use get a beater. I have a couple of Coasts that have been beaten on and take a edge well. I have a couple of beater Kershaw's and a Milwaukee D2 I got from a rep as a freebie that is solid.
If you wanna spend a bit more Benchmade and Spyderco are nice but more pricey. I like tantos myself. For just breaking down boxes and chit get a Milwaukee flip-back. They hold like 5-6 extra blades as well

Bought this a few years ago for EDC, mainly utility purposes, still holding up well and just a few minutes sharpening from time to time is all it needs.

For the price it's great, no worries if I lose it.
