From what I understand, it's a **** load of regulations and when and where you can build, and that it literally takes years to build anything there because of the Govt regulations and rules they have.

Dude it's insane, at least, like you said, in California you have decent weather and the ocean. There's no redeeming factors to living in Chicago. The weather sucks most of the year, and now after all of the rioting, there's a sense of lawlessness that wasn't there before in a place that was already among the most dangerous in the country. I watched the looting this summer with the police nowhere to be seen. It was unreal.

People constantly complain that the beaches are overcrowded and too cold.

You can't even go into certain parts of the beaches (further congesting it) because parts of it are closed off to only surfing. Parking is a nightmare or impossible if you get there in the middle of the day.

Inland CA 40 minutes away from San Diego is typically over 90 degrees daily.sometimes reaching 100 in the summer.

Not enough housing but chittons of people who make lots of money = fiercely competitive housing market

Groceries, cars, etc all cost about the same as anywhere else.

I've heard due to zoning laws and the building permit system it's extremely expensive to build here too.

And all the broke people who keep coming here and forever renting.

Zoning doesn't allow apartments to be higher than 2 stories. And rent control keeps bumping up rent by 5% every year and entices construction companies to only build luxury apartments. I think it's stupid because I live in the barrio and people consider this a "bad neighborhood", but 2 blocks down the street, there are luxury apartments that people consider to be good neighborhoods but at 3K per month for a box.

It isn't supply and demand or getting what you pay for, I live right next to these places, but am not paying anywhere near 3000 per month. The only difference is that luxury have even less room to walk around outside and they have tiny af interiors.

I think he meant illegals. San Diego and slightly north have a huge illegal alien problem.

San Francisco is "friendly" to illegals in the sense that they pander to them, but illegals won't/can't live there as it's too expensive.

In San Diego, there are houses with 10 cars parked in there, you can guess who lives there as the yards and house are in terrible condition. Also low income apartments house illegals too because as long as 1 person is legal (typically the anchor baby) then the family gets benefits.

Seems like people still underestimate how much we earn in the bay area.

I have individual contributors on my team, all in their mid 20s, earning 200k+ when you factor in their stock units. And TBH they're nothing special and not in engineering either.

They are trying to pass a law that if like 51% of a public company does business or is in California, then California government can force the company to put diversity on their boards/CEs etc.

Highest real estate prices because of those taxes on companies and businesses that then get passed onto consumers.

Example, I know numbers aren't accurate.

A 100k house to build in Wyoming will cost 200k

That same house will cost the same company 300k to build and sell for 500k because taxes on literally everything in existence.

It is rather miserable. My life is here, but I wish it wasn't.
