Made Kolache for the first time

Poppyseed

Apricot about to go in the oven

Texas misc probably knows about this little treats - and if you've ever made the Austin to DFW drive you'vedefinitelymade a Czech Stop.

It's a slow week so I'm binging Great British Bakeoff and cooking up a storm

I remember those. I used to eat them every day for breakfast back in college.

Now I'm craving them lol.

Cream cheese is my favorite at the Czech Stop.
Their Cinnamon rolls are amazing too.

Went to school right in the middle of that Austin to DFW drive and can confirm. Kolaches everywhere, at every gas station and grocery store.

Usually they have like a sausage in the middle though; you filled them with apricot?

Czech Stop fills them with fruit and or cream cheese. The best meat one IMO is the Meyer's one HEB makes.

Fawwwk, I miss HEB. Would do unspeakable things to get another bottle of Whataburger buffalo sauce, store-brand tamales, and some Dr. B from them.

They're these little yeast-based pastries with a fruit or cheesy (usually cream cheese or farmer's cheese) center. Such a treat!

The cream cheese are so, so good. I could eat a ridiculous amount in one sitting! When I was a kid I'd always ask for a deviled egg or an egg salad sandwich from the Czech Stop. What a waste!

I didn't know that! Now I think I have a better idea of how you're familiar with Girl Defined

I think the meat-filled ones are Klobásník, and the fruit / cheese ones are Kolach. The jalepeno cheddar ones....oh lawd.

Ugh. Their tamales. We always had those on Christmas Day. And Pam's Pimento Cheese from fancypants Central Market, just shut up and take my money.

I am an old Czech.

I would not call the first thing koláč, those are buchty, although a buchta is usually more cube shaped and sprinkled with sugar. See e.g.https://www.toprecepty.cz/recept/537...hty-s-povidly/

The koláče in the second pic also look odd, in particular their color seems too light. I am more used to this lookhttps://fresh.iprima.cz/recepty/kynu...-s-merunkami-0

However, it is possible that they were baked according to some regional recipe and both probably taste better than they look.

EDIT: I somehow missed that the koláče were not baked yet, that explains the color. Sorry. I thought the Americans may have some lightly colored baked goods, just like your bread is different from ours.

No need to be sorry!

Question for you, we always ate these prune-filled steam dumplings that you'd dip in butter growing up and called them "shishkies." I can't find a recipe anywhere, so I'm wondering if that was just a regional name for them. Any clue what they might be?

The fruit ones are nice but TBH, I think I prefer meat, too.

Fun! You've got a good great aunt to make you those, she must love you very much. <3

White isn't very cheery or Christmasy.
