What is Japanese Whiskey like?
Is it light and smooth like Irish or all different like Scotch?
If like Single Malt Scotch, which region is it like?
I can't see it being like generic American/Canadian blended whiskey or even Bourbon.
Also, for future reference, is it Japanese whisky or whiskey?

Am I crazy or did Knob Creek Single Barrel used to be in the $40 range? Because that felt like a great deal, but in Houston right now the $50 range seems to be the going rate, and I don't know if I like it as much at that price point.

just picked up a bottle this weekend of ****** Coffey Malt

fukkkk this stuff is amazing might be in my top 3 favorite scotch/whiskys (srs)

Bottle suggestion for a guy who doesnt like super peat-y scotch? I really dig Monkey shoulder, for example. And Macallan Fine Oak (i think).

Im not big on peat. Growing up, dad had (still does) a great yard so i have "fond" memories of peat moss. lel. I taste the peat and i think...no thanks...dont want to taste gardening.

Yeah . . . samesies. My first reaction was "this tastes like dirt". I sort of got more accustomed to it, but not in the "this isn't really too bad" sense.

I've been experimenting with some local stuff here and there. Got some Spruce Creek rye and some Tin Cup rye that are pretty decent. Breckenridge distillery, who makes good hooch, has a bunch of different bourbons that I need to sample at some point. I've been up to their distillery in Breckenridge a few times (pre 'Rona) and they do some custom items from time to time that don't get distributed widely. Cool place. Has an indoor restaurant and an outdoor "beer garden" that it nice . . . right there up against the mountains. Maybe this summer, if the virus dies down, I can get up there again for a more normal visit.

I’ve been drinking some fun stuff lately. Though enjoyable, I can’t recommend the 17 year Balvenie. The usual diminishing returns effect on all things luxury/excess. I just got it when I was going to my girl’s parent’s place for thanksgiving so I wanted to bring something special. Def like it better than Carribean cask though. Wasn’t a fan of the vanilla/rum tones.






Tonight I’m FINALLY getting my tastebuds to Lag16. I had Lag8 already but it was overly smoky in my opinion. Similar to taliskar. The smell is already great.

Yeah, just came in today, it's the Knifeworks exclusive with burlap micarta. I have three of them, probably my favorite cheapy/budget folder and I love micarta. I thought this one went well with the wood

I have the first run of the micarta Elementum and it's an awesome knife too. The micarta on the version I have is utter trash though, it feels like smooth plastic. The micarta on the Feldspars are American sourced and all feel amazing. Same steel (well, newer Elementums have S35VN which is a step above D2, but I think the price goes up as well), only real difference is the blade shape and deployment method (flipper vs thumbstud). Both very smooth Feldspar is a little lighter at 2.5oz vs 2.8oz. I'd say the Feldspar fits my hand a little better ergo wise as well.

Ignore the ****ty lanyard on the Feldspar, I literally just tied knots with some leather haha,

Someone ITT recommended Dalwhinnie 15 to me last year and that's probably my favorite bottle so far. Other browns i've liked:

Balvenie 12 or 15
Talisker. - it's almost overly smoky but i like it from time to time.

Good information. Man at one point I had over 20 folders. Benchmades, Kershaws, Spydies, Kizers and eventually I just got tired of being afraid to scuff them or lose them so I sold them all and just kept a couple cheapies. The Rat 2 gets the majority of the pocket time because if I lose it, hey, Im out 25 bucks. And that AUS8 is a breeze to sharpen on the Sharpmakr.

Oh, I grabbed a bottle of something new today. I saw it in store, never heard of it, checked the Distiller app and noticed it had a 90 rating so I grabbed it.

I like Ardbeg Uigeadail. It's a little more peaty than Laga 16 but not Laphroaig peaty.

I haven't had the 10yo so, I'll be avoiding it. Bought my daughters boyfriend a bottle of Scapa to add to his collection. Solid bottle.

Depends what you’re aiming for - do you want a consistent bottle? Evan Williams BiB, old granddad BiB, WT101 are all reliable and around $20-25 with Evan Williams being even cheaper.

Or if you like some shot at variety, Ezra brooks and rebel yelll now offer store picked single barrels around $30-35.
