This. I just use it for extra cals(i dont listen to the machine nor do I eat them back) and mainly heart health/conditioning for hockey.

Ill go for a 30-40min on the tread and adjust the pace accordingly. If it feels too easy, ill ramp it up a full number for a few minutes. If that becomes too hard to sustain, ill adjust the pace. I dont track it each time, save for how I feel. Some days I am more spent than others, especially on how the lifting session went the night before etc.

Its just a great additive to have in your workouts

Cardio is also a form of burning calories which can be calculated based on a multitude of factors including age, body weight, lean body mass, and heart rate. Having a higher lean body mass and increasing your heart rate can cause you to burn a large amount of calories.

The calories your body uses for energy also depends on your heart rate. A higher heart rate will yield more muscle glycogen, a moderate heart rate will yield a more balanced fatty acid and muscle glycogen use for energy, especially in a fasted state.

In a fasted state your blood glucose levels will be lower and the body will be more predisposed to using fatty acids for energy along with glucose as opposed to just the high levels of blood glucose you may have after a meal.

The amount of terrible information on cardio out there is astounding.

If you keep rests between sets at 1 min and are doing exercises such as squats, deadlifts, pullups, you can burn about 1000 cals/hr. Things like bicep curls don't burn anything significant.

This is an interesting topic.

I always found the “one hour of jogging won’t burn a candy bar worth of calories” strange.

Truth is, that is BS. You can burn an entire meal off in an hour of walking, there are ZERO studies showing that exercise burns little calories.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that exercise burns A TON of calories, hence why you are famished after a workout and hence why working out on an empty stomach first thing in the morning ANECDOTALLY burns a ton of fat

if you squat for 30 mins straight, you're only burning like 250-300 calories

for powerlifters, its only like 30 secs of actual squatting in 30 mins with the amount the rest they're taking lol

Cardio really doesn't burn enough calories to help lose weight
OP's thinking is the reason why so many people get winded just walking up a flight of stairs.

If your diet is in check, burning 300-500 calories is huge.
Add in the benefits of having healthy heart, lungs, blood pressure, sense of well being, etc. and cardio is great.

Lifting provides those same benefits especially cognitive benefits

the reason why some people aren't losing weight while doing cardio is because they still eat like a pig

I find I get my HR quite high when squatting, but yeah an entire workout for me is 30 minutes which ends up about 250 cals for me. I guess that's only 500 cals/hr. I find pullups raise my HR the most.

That’s because the majority of the calories we burn happen after the workout as the body rushes to transport carbs to the muscles in order to prevent catabolism.

nooooo not even close

leg days for me can burn up to 1500 calories not to mention the amount of glycogen depletion AKA carbs, my body can require 500-600g carb to need to be replenished from a tough workout, so even if i did not "burn" 2000 calories my body needs an additional 2000 calories to replenish the glycogen that was depleted. This is why this calories in/calories out nonsense is meaningless to people who actually want to build muscle/lose fat.

The one thing OP had right is more muscle = more fat burning because more muscle does indeed increase calorie expenditure and increase calorie demands on the body for replenishing and recovering. This is why lifting is more conducive to fat loss than cardio.

So skip the cardio and just eat less then...

Cardio is literally just filling or wasting time.

That's pretty much exactly what I do too. Just use mix it in there depending how I feel. Don't track anything except for maybe mile times now and then since I still gotta pass a physical test every 6 months at work.

Of course cardio burns calories, just like literally everything else in the gym. Nothing you said applies specifically to cardio and doesn't apply to any of the other types of workouts you'd do in the gym.

Exactly. At my body weight I usually get an after burn effect that has me burning upwards of 2k calories. That’s why I go straight to Pizza Hut everyday to order 50 honey boneless BBQ wings, 1 chocolate chip cookie pie, and 1 tray of chocolate chip brownies. Sometimes if I get enough protein earlier in the day I’ll substitute the wings for a large pizza. I find this gives me sufficient protein and carbs to create super compensation of glycogen storage which would give my muscles an enhanced look, make them pop more. If I did cardio afterwards I wouldn’t get this effect and I’d just end up losing muscle

Guys look at most lean, shredded dudes. They don’t do much cardio. Maybe a brisk walk but that’s it. Doing a lot of cardio (more than 1hr) will result in the skinny fat runner look

Dafuq kind of cardio are you doing? I'm not a fast runner, but I do an hour and burn at least 600.
Currently: Marathon training (Run with Hal - Advanced I); The Work/Body Beast hybrid

Doubt it. And if you really do burn that much a large portion of those calories would interfere with muscle retention/protein synthesis which equates to weight and muscle loss which results in skinny fat

I am not denying that, but theres good reasons to do both. You can only lift so much before it becomes counterproductive and interferes with recovery and s just causing excessive muscle damage.
Cardio, especially HIIT cardio, has been shown to dramatically increase insulin sensitivity which increases fat loss and muscle gain.

It will influence your caloric needs and raise your appetite. You can dial down your calories from there just as if you are cutting after a bulking season.
