Either I was is a unique location or this is just bull**** and most of you don't try.

Everything is a choice its definitely based on whats available at the moment but one good choice often leads to another.

Having been obese most people on here are already on the right track. Physical fitness is the #1 priority imo. Everything good after that will follow.

You can't possibly refuting that "learned helplessness" is LEARNED and is a set of beliefs. You can't "not believe" something you believe, and that's the whole problem with LEARNED helplessness.

The whole point of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, where terms like that come from, is that whatever you believe is FACT for you unless you are able to challenge you beliefs.

The stuff I said about social structure and people stuck at the bottom---is fact. What I said about logical fallacy that "everyone can do something" is covered by Argumentum Ad Absurdum.

People did not like this movie for the reasons I'm pointing out. The are constant themes in American conservative thought that are obviously illogical and propaganda.

Haven’t read the responses in the thread but this is a BS take from OP getting emotional over a book he just read. I like OP but from post history he’s an elementary school teacher with a wife that makes a good income. Imagine if misfortune had left him to raise 3 kids by himself on an elementary teachers salary in a rural area ($35k/year) Would that be “learned helplessness”? Give me a fukkin break.

The reason people react as they do here is because they ARE the deadbeats that really aren't getting much and they can't stand it.

The author of the book in question is suffering from this too. He has some success but that can all go down the drain MIGHTY FAST if a couple of bad things happen to him. But, guys like that are delusional, like teenagers, and can't ever see that happening to them.

i worked with this guy in the summer, who was born deaf, small in size, probably 3'5 feet tall, his leg grew backwards and his spine grew abnormal, he takes massive painkiller pills, worked with him in a production facility in the summer, he works hard as ****. and there's like grown adult men with no health conditions holdin a ****in cup on the street, sleeping on pavements, so pathetic. and it's all white people, over here at least.

Dude, you are partly right, but most rich people are like royalty. They come from money and opportunity and people in their families, social circle, etc keep helping them. That is just luck at that point.

For real, there aren't many people from poverty who create massive success and become "rich" in the end. Poverty people tend to go to college and become middle class, at best, most of the time.

No doubt what so ever, that it helps coming from successful people. I mean, just the attitude that you can do it from the get go. You know you come from the stock that can get it done. You are around people who can get it done, and you learn how they get it done. Having the name, the connections, it helps bigly.

This is true to some capacity.
You won't be a next top 10 scorer in a professional sports league or be awarded a Nobel prize if you have not the been genetically given the required abilities, though you may still get very far with just abilities of an average Joe if you really try.

Cool topic Drew, always top notch discussion with you.

As for what keeps people back, I'm mid 30s and STILL figuring this out, in my own life. My incomplete understanding is that it's all about agency. That's the core to fulfilment in every single facet of life. You touched on it by bringing up choices and that it's all up to the individual, but I think it can all be distilled to acknowledgement of agency, and seizing it. I just watched a Netflix special on Ted Kaczynski-the guy had a 165 IQ, and yet he being at the genius level he remained enslaved to what others thought, and could only REACT instead of living in accordance to his own values. It's kind of sad that could happen to a person with such potential, and I won't downplay the chit he had to deal with growing up, but if he were to step back and had the ability to observe himself from afar, maybe he'd find his actions ridiculous and petty.

At conflict with agency is inertia, the continued path we are on based on prior events-even if circumstances have changed. Continuing to smoke even tho you've moved on from your friends who were smokers. Continuing to hoard chit like your parents even tho you're not poor anymore. Buying candy and chips because you feel like chit and these things are just automatically what you buy. Despite the fact that your weight depresses you. And you buy chit when you feel depressed. See how this leads to continuous vicious cycle? With inertia we are running on autopilot, not examining our choices, not measuring the actions against our actual goals and desires.
Virtue is its own reward.

What does raising three kids on a teacher salary have to do with learned helplessness? It makes me think you don’t understand what this thread is all about. It’s not about how much money you make, and it’s not about your circumstances. It’s 100% how you respond to your circumstances.

Not that it matters, but I make more like $50k. And my wife makes more than double that.

Despite a few of you arguing, this is a good thrad.

Once upon a time, I lived in an apartment complex for low income people since I could only find a job in grocery at the time (Broadcasting is my thing.) This was in the Old Confederacy where the poor white people are SO sweet and friendly and polite most of he time, but boy, did they ever look to me and the landlord to fix all their issues.

It's like they knew what the problem was, and how to fix it, but were afraid to actually do anything without telling me about it first, to get my validation. It was usually a broken down vehicle, but sometimes it was their credit report, or putting together furniture.

I would try to help when I could, but they eventually decide you are beholden to always help them and resent you when you don't. They actually get mad that you have BETRAYED them by not dropping everything to drive them to the store to get beer and cigarettes, or put the new battery in their car, if you were busy.

Before you know it, they decided I was a snob. :/

Everyone there smoked except me, and not just cigarettes. They all drank beer and many were on SSDI or something. They also usually smelled like B.O and a lot of the ladies there were opportunistic prostitutes, along with a few of the underage girls. Ferel children everywhere who don't know how to act, along with undisciplined dogs who either won't stop barking, or want to jump all over you.

Tow truck would drive around the parking lot at night, looking for cars to reposes and the Police were there a lot when all the rednecks would have their little dramas.

I got to where I never answered my door and moved out as soon as I could when I had a better paying job.

The movie is great, so is the book.

I'm watching this play out in real time with my half sisters, also spread out through Appalachia. They just keep doing chaotic lady tradie things and can't figure out why their life sucks. I was hoping that after the death of our mother they'd get it together, but no. Victim culture is learned and ingrained.
