i think you're trying to think too logically. logic is a man made construct. it doesn't mean that the universe abides by logic. we may be able to frame the universe in a way that makes sense, but that doesn't mean that's all there is
nikola tesla invented tons of stuff with electricity but didn't believe in the existence of the "electron" - a fundamental aspect of the universe that creates electricity
you could also never know how much you don't know. tesla prob thought he know a bunch of chit but little did he know there's an even smaller world than the elementary particles we originally knew
how about answering whether the universe is finite or infinite and whether we can replicate consciousness or the "hard problem of consciousness"?
get away from the quantifying and look into the "qualia" -

This isn't to say your story doesn't happen and that we should all sit back because everything's predestined anyway. It means that your genetics, upbringing, intelligence, problem solving skills, that which was bestowed upon you through birth, how you were raised, who you grew up with, how you spent your time (which are all connected), led you to succeed on that journey.
Take someone like you who lost all they had but grew up with no friends, no family, abusive mother, father who left him and the way you perceive challenges might be different.

It's not true. Even if we exclude quantum mechanics, it's not true. That being said, our universe is still to an excellent approximation deterministic. Barring contrived situations, it is going to be effectively deterministic.
So basically pre-determinism vs determinism. You cant change what will happen but you cant predict it either.

My alt Anachron pretty much summarized my thoughts on the first reply OP. Obviously we're not the first to have this debate. It's been raging for thousands of years, but I've given it a ton of thought and I'm firmly on the opposite side of the argument.
I have a poster on the door to my classroom that I think summarizes things perfectly:

We may not have any control of the circumstances we are dealt, but we have control over how we respond.
I recently read a book called Maus and it had me thinking about this topic. It was written by the son of Holocaust survivors who told him their story. The family detailed in the book was followed from the late 1930's in Poland all the way through World War II. The author's dad was initially drafted into the Polish army to fight Germans, then the family was sent to ghettos. They would hide from Germans and anti-Jewish Poles in frozen barns, wells, and underground bunkers. The man and his wife lost a son, their parents, siblings, and cousins during the war. Eventually, the man and his wife ended up in Auschwitz.
The thing that struck me was that the man, despite the fact that he was enslaved with a bunch of other skeletons with Typhus in a death camp, was still going about his life trying to improve his situation. He found ways to secretly send letters and food to his wife (even occasionally seeing her/speaking a few words to her). He found a way to keep himself alive and even make a little money on the side fixing shoes/boots for prisoners and Nazis.
So even under the most horrendous and genocidal of conditions, he didn't respond by giving up because of circumstances beyond his control. Could he have chosen to lay down and rot? Of course. Would anyone have blamed him? Of course not. But he and his wife did survive. They were both worse for the wear, sadly, but they made choices that kept them alive and they got to continue their lives.
*I know Misc gonna Misc and someone is going to misinterpret this post somehow to mean that I'm a Holocaust denier or something. So just to pre-empt that, I thought I'd point out that is not the case.

no, it's not. i posted an article in here that also explained it. go look a few pages back. it's a long read. within that article they tried to use electronics/ microchips to replicate consciousness and had to admit they still didn't have a fundamental grasp of consciousness
you're denying you have an ability to experience what something is "like"?
im guessing similarly you didn't read the stanford website, as it poses many questions and talks about many things

I say we live in an effectively deterministic world because while it is usually deterministic, there exist pathological examples where randomness matters. Schrodinger's cat is an example of this.

Everything is in fact quantifiable, and I challenge you to find me something that isn't. The very notion of a thing itself is immediately quantifiable as an identification of a signal. Humans perceive, analyze, and associate. We can count the associations and consider these to be things in themselves and build the illusion of intelligence, all while acting in a genetically predefined way.
And ofc the subjectivity of it doesn't change the physical reality. Your perception of the idea of the number 2 is different from mine. They are, however, sufficiently similar that we may have a dialogue.

Found an interesting article regarding randomness to a quantum level but **** asks for payment in order to read the whole thing lol. Is anything truly random? Most scientists say yes, but some of them are drifting to the opposite side of it.

Yeah Sam Harris, a neuroscientist, has a book out about how free will is an illusion.
Also I've read about things like soul groups where before you reincarnate in this world you pick the circumstances that will likely happen to you...for example people choose to become disabled or know that there is a high chance they will get into an accident that will leave them disabled all to learn life lessons. I don't know why anyone would choose to be disabled but then again it seems pretty plausible to me...who knows

Only losers from poor families care about things like racism being false or religion being false.
Of course they are, except people only spend lots of energy on this to prop up grifters trying to destabilize civilization.

I was the same way too bro. Henry David Thoreau states: "What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals."

"The flowers bloom, then wither... The stars shine and one day become extinct. This earth, the sun, the galaxies and even the big universe, someday will be destroyed. Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

They are, however, sufficiently similar that we may have a dialogue.

i do believe lots of things are quantifiable, as you've stated. "material" or "physical" for something to be there there must be something
what i think is happening is you're not going beyond the quantification, but instead choosing the comfiness of the quantifiable

I suggest re reading the post and exploring it more. Don’t fall into the mistake of thinking humans are individuals. Almost all (95%) are made from the same design. The remaining differ and are driven by different energies.
It’s almost 2021 and people would still be surprised that not all humans are the same.

The most important question is: Does it matter? If it is as I say and the choice is an illusion, but still feels meaningful to you, does it matter? It's kind of obvious we are all slaves to the physics of the universe. We exist as physical entities. That doesn't mean we don't have an apparent identity and sense of self and choice (even if it is an illusion and an emergent behavior of the underlying physics). Ultimately, it wouldn't matter either way. We live as if we make choices whether we really do or don't.

I disagree, Ken.
I think that your upbringing and environment plays a part in what you become, but to allow it to define you is to remove yourself from personal responsibility.
At a certain point you have to recognize that you're responsible for your own decisions.

I was the same way too bro. Henry David Thoreau states: "What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals."

Now that I am successful and run my own business everyone is so nice to me including family. My heart is still ice cold from being trash/treated like trash for 28 years though.
I feel that quote heavy bro

You aren’t of the different design. I can tell with high certainty.

Ken-O would be an exception to this rule as he does not come across as bitter and miserable.
