For beginners and near beginners some good beginner book is ideal, like Susan Polgar’s “world champions guide to chess” for example. Important to remember, to get maximum benefit you gotta read the book more than once, and more than twice, do all the exercises she gives until you remember the correct answer or can give it instantly and don’t have to think at all, not even 2 seconds.

I’m sure these days there are apps and free stuff on youtube as well for learning.

Next is to solve puzzles, there are free ones on chess com and lichess. Focus on easy puzzles like mate in 1 and one move forks etc.

And go over every game you played with computer or a stronger player who can point out what you could have done better.

And as you progress the above process just keeps repeating, only the puzzles get longer and harder, and books get more advanced.

I use “chess tactics pro” app on my phone, they have a few hundred free puzzles, and then thousands if you pay a few dollars. That’s great exercise when you’re stuck somewhere waiting for your flight or a food order or something.

I liked those Daniel Naroditsky videos guys recommended above. Probably the most beloved free teacher on youtube is Ginger GM (simon Williams), his instructional videos are pure gold. And he is hilarious, and often drunk...

One question for the chess proficient miscers. I've always been a big advocate of learning by doing in life but I see a lot of people advocating studying chess. Will that make a beginner better quicker even though that goes against my intuition?

Best progress is made by combining practical experience of actual playing AND learning from teachers, books and videos.

Being able to be a strong intuitive player is important, but the fact of the matter is that a lot of chess does simply require memorizing lines, knowing theory, etc.

Bobby Fischer came to hate chess for that reason and even invented a chess variant that randomized the board setup to prevent having any kind of foreknowledge of what your were going to do other than calculate and plan on the fly.

EDIT: just finished the video. Holy phuck. Fischer is the kind of player who makes you really understand the beauty of the game srs. Love agadamator because he commentated in a way that even a subhuman ELO score player like myself can understand.

Absolutely mirin.

I'm glad there are, as I want to take chess seriously this year. I'm stuck around 1100-1300 online playing intuitively and I'm hoping getting balls deep in strategy and theory will push me up to 1400-1500 by December (I have no idea how realistic this is). I still make dumb blunders and leave pieces hanging but sometimes I surprise myself with the lines I find. I ****ing love this game.

I float around lower than you 1000-1100 usually, but I've been thinking the same. I'm too much of a history-focused person though so when I 'study chess' I always just end up reading about some historical game between Morphy and the local chess wizard and why his decision to not open with e4 was so forward-thinking in the chess world in the context of 19th century chess lol.

I think having recurring tournaments and a group of people to practice and talk shop with will help though srs.

I'd say you're very close in level to me, so 1500 will be by this summer I believe 100%. Tryin to get back there myself, but the downside of phone games is I'm usually not in a place where I can 100% focus. Gotta stop screwing myself.

I remember reading on a chess forum that this is fake, meaning someone used an engine or just some online chess expert like Hikaru trolled Nigel Short and pretended to be Fischer.

Generally speaking Fischer would never play a bong cloud opening. It wasn’t his era nor his style or personality. He also would get smashed badly by Nigel Short if he dared to play a bong cloud VS Nigel in his (Fischer’s) current (at that time) age and level of playing (which is miles below where he was in 1960-70s)

But, I must say, I did not look into this, I just heard this rumor online a few times about some troll trolling Nigel with an engine and a bong cloud opening pretending to be Fischer for the LOLs.
