[QUOTE=TomWanks post_id=1627620833]I think barbell and dumbbell bench are both essential to building a good chest, but machines really help you fill the muscles with blood after stretching them out doing the plyometrics.

My chest days alternate by primary plyometric (incline/flat/decline) barbell bench. Then I follow up with flat dumbbell bench on incline/decline weeks and incline dumbbell bench on flat weeks.

After that, I'm on the supine press machine doing one of like five routines I've written-- imo, this is the best machine for chest and it's not even close. After that it's all really hyper-focused isometric work.

hammer strength chest machines are awesome. if ur gym has those. i think you could build an amazing chest just with them
The hammer strength machines are the only actual machines worth using in my experience. I think they may be more effective for chest than bench for the general population because it gets that squeeze and contraction properly and is safer. Pec fly/rear delt machine as well, when done properly.

This is smart.

A HUGE issue with Bars and chest is that most people bring the bar down by neck when benching. That focuses on your SHOULDERS more than your chest.

What engages your pecs is when you bring the weight in line with the tip of your sternum, not your neck. However, that's an unnatural movement when using a bar. However, if you are using dumbbells, it is easy to bring the weights down over your sternum because that's a natural movement and you will almost never bring them down lined up with your neck.

You will get much more development of the chest with dumbbells lifted as I've said. That targets the middle of your chest creating defined square muscles.

If at Planet Fitness, I believe dumbbells go up to only 60. So, if you are doing a high volume routine like German Volume Training, you can grab fairly light weights and if you do 10x10 reps, you will get solid gains. You will also feel that workout.

If you are not getting a good pump using the smith machine, there must be something wrong with your body.
Rudy smith installed these machines around gyms worldwide that the populous at large may enjoy the benefits of safe spotter-free workouts. Millions of people throughout history have made impressive fitness gains with the help of this miraculous device.

Is it one of the converging type (handles go closer together at the top) machines? I haven’t benched with bbs or dbs in idk how long, because I actually have gotten better results from the machine pressing. I still do incline/overhead/reverse grip pressing with dbs as secondary movements though.

Luckily the machine in my gym goes up to 240, and dbs go up to 125.

Incline Smith Machine really takes your stabilizers out of the equation, so it feels a little easier to hold, but you're also pushing in a linear direction, as opposed to an arc and not subjected to the weights moving around in your hand. My gym has one of those smith machines that moves in all directions, but I'd imagine PF's only goes up and down, and not side to side, essentially a barbell lift but on a smith machine that can move in all directions.

I would not use a smith machine for bench or incline bench. Personally for me, I do flat bench with a barbell and then dumbbell incline press. I use the targeted machines when nothing is available, or if I want to do some lighter, faster, high rep burner exercises.

Smith machine only allows you to push in the Y-Direction, which will result in wasted movement in the X-Direction. On an targeted machine, you push out and up, when on a Smith Machine you only press in one direction. Smith Machine always felt unnatural to me, and I've always considered it was for beginners who were afraid of barbell lifts and want some type of safety. Hell if a smith machine falls on you, you're fukked, but a barbell will bounce and roll off. I use the smith machine for calf raises since the distance I'm traveling isn't far, or for barbell shrugs when the squat racks are busy and the dumbbells are taken. I don't want to be a dikk shruggin in the squat rack when someone wants to squat.

This is a good article why you should avoid the bench press, unless you are MattLondon who can only lift with one arm, really avoid using a Smith Machine srs:https://www.stack.com/a/why-athletes...C%20does%20not.
