when everyone with abs started posting pictures of themselves claiming to be a guru and gained thousands of followers..you wouldn't' believe the amount of guys on instagram that have thousands of followers that have garbage physiques
540 pound deadlift

100 pound DB shoulder pressesx10\
225x28 barbell bench
405x10 deadlift
405 bench press

Leader-NOT a follower ..i am my own own crew

The fact that there were (and even still are) people who take Jason Blaha seriously and as a source of information should tell you the entire “industry” is a joke.

Lifting weights, doing cardio, and eating food. Wow, what an industry lmao.

2012

Remember pre 2012 we had hodgetwins youtube videos and people actually lifted in the gym before it became a social outlet for Norman's. Also the misc had a lot of lifters and even bodybuilders.

The industry has always been full of snake oil salesman. You can go look at issues of Flex or M&D and you’ll see them peddaling 50 different supplements to get huge.

The only things you need to gain muscle: Consistency, eat enough food, and sleep.

i think it all started with the widespread use of dat dere IMO, which would be around the 70s, it really spawned an industry based on lies and people really believed if you ate clean, trained hard and never gave up you could look like Arnold lol ... also bodybuilding in the distant past was more "physical culture", which emphasized aesthetics as well as feats of strength at the same time, look strong but also be strong and perform impressive feats of strength all on one stage.

the next downfall was when bodybuilding became less about aesthetics and more about who has the most mass which was around the early 90s when Dorian Yates came in and started crushing everybody. from there it wasn't about dat dere v-taper, having bodybuilders with distended stomachs and dat dere bubblegut. IMO if you look at the physiques of reg park, frank zane, steve reeves, john grimek, jack lalanne those were peak aesthetics pre joooce era. many of those guys also performed some insane feats of strength/fitness.

next one is just social media in general. It's good in a lot of ways but there is also a lot of bad, but I guess with social media it really just amplified the good, but also amplified the bad conditions that already existed.

i mean it's possible, i'll be even willing to say most likely he was but it wasn't very wide spread and i highly doubt they had the "good chit" like now, or even when it started taking off

still regardless tho i'd take those physiques over the distended guts we see in modern mr olympia bodybuilding. and they actually train legs unlike some of the "physique" competitors.

although the one difference I note is that more people are pursueing it in some way(yet still being fatter and more unhealthy than ever lulz) and more are most definetly self-conscious of their body image/way they look men and women.

I think a much larger percentage of men in the past who "worked out" were former athletes, guys mainly wanting to be stronger/more useful human beings and they liked it. with the aesthetics being a bonus. And no i'm not talking about fat autistic powerlifters who will put on hundreds of dollars of equipment to add 10 pounds to their gym lift.

but now it's just lots of insecure normal guys with extreme body image issues and how they look is all that matters. a lot of it has to do with more people being disconnected from society in general, more incels, just much overall lower life satisfaction among men across the board. working out is almost always near the top of peoples "self improvement" suggestions which more are looking into because of these factors.

women were never seriously into what is considered modern fitness and if they were it was usualy just some a quick home workout, light cardio, yoga ideally. in old times it was mostly a mens club. but as soon as they found out they could just put on yoga pants, do a ****ty booty workout and have unlimited positive attention the floodgates were opened. many now think they are an expert because of this and all of this positive rinforcement entrenches them further down the rabbithole. thanks simps.

the people that go to the gym don't even look like they care about lifting man. i go to a 24/7 gym because it's not that busy. but man there's ****in litter everywhere, stolen equipment, nobody puts **** away, i went in early morning one time and everyone was just ****in high smelling of weed doing some jackass exercises like douchebags

and those ****ers are paying $60/month for the gym

idk. almost feel like paying $100-$200/month for a gym where people actually seriously lift. probably less chance of morons. yeah that seems like a good idea. i think i'll make the switch if i can find a decent premium gym

In other words, when the fitness community started standardizing around the common currency of "likes."

This. Honestly everyone replying to this thread should flat out delete ALL of their social media accounts. I don't know why you would want to voluntarily provide your entire life story to corporations that want to control your behavior anyway. Keeping up with your friends' cat pics isn't worth it.

brah you don't even need to pay that much for a decent gym, sounds like you go to a gym in the most ghetto area of southside chicago by the way you are describing it. i understand environment can be important but lol if you are paying attention to all of that noise instead of staying hyper-focused on your own chit. i just put on my headphones and literally ignore everything around me while i go to the squat rack that nobody uses (better for me)
