A person or a company like Melvin Capital can use realized losses to reduce their tax burden. Iโ€™d think it would be mostly a net-zero game for the govt

What about the retail investors who were also short on those stocks? Or thought the company was overvalued and were waiting for it to come back to reality before buying in?

It's more intricate than that. It's not some random guy going, "yeah this stock is going down, so lets short." It's more, "We have $500MM at our disposal and 15 partners who can drive this stock down from $40 to $5 where we can scoop up all the stock." They tried this **** with Elon and TSLA, and lost. Now retail investors are getting wise on their game and using it against them.

I did a quick read up on day trading and from what I found, a day trade is the purchase and sell of a stock on the same, day. Not sure about the others, but Robinhood had day trading protection built into it.
