Nice choices on the Queen songs. Tie Your Mother Down is a great riff to learn.

I have been thinking about getting into playing. I am a huge music fan but can't play a lick. I had pretty bad weakness and coordination in my left ring and pinky fingers. Any tips?

Is that weakness as a result of a hand injury or just generally?

Everyone starts out with weaker, uncoordinated hands and it's something which you develop over time.

The more songs you play and exercises you work on, the stronger your fretting and picking hands will become.

I found that running chromatic scales and 'inverted' chromatic scales up and down the neck helped. Along with the stretching exercises like those in Petrucci's Rock Discipline.

I'm sure the second solo in The Trooper has some trill sections which I found great for developing strength in individual fingers and it isn't too difficult for an early intermediate to learn.

I also started out wth a cheap acoustic that had action a mile high. It was a pain at first but paid dividends when I moved onto a more expensive electric guitar with a proper set up. Trying to fret as a beginner on that acoustic developed finger strength for sure.

Dolly Pardon can play guitar and I seriously doubt your hands are weaker than hers. Coordination is built from practice. My strumming hand took a lot longer to figure out than my fretting hand. It's all just building muscle memory

Scallops do do make a difference for bending, for a variety of reasons. You can pretty easily get a 2 or 2.5 step bend on the G-string at the 2nd fret with the 1st finger by hooking the finger, for example.
Sorry I wasn't advocating a scalloped neck, just quoting what I remembered!! It was a big thing to do in the '80's. I am an advocate of having someone who knows what they are doing set the string height, neck bend, etc. It makes a huge difference in the play-ability of the guitar. It's tough to struggle with high string height, frets that buzz, all sorts of odd things that can go wrong.

You don't need to be a master luthier to set action height. With an adjustable saddle electric anything you do can easily be undone. It's really hard to break anything by turning a truss rod as long as you don't act like a gorilla with the allen wrench. Just hit a harmonic on the 12th fret and if its flat move the saddle forward 1/4 turn at time until its correct. Do the opposite if its sharp. Guitars aren't magical implements you need to sacrifice a goat for while reciting incantations to adjust. Don't strong arm anything, go a little at time and you'll be fine

I saw something on a Zakk Wylde instructional video one, which was to just keep practicing pulloffs with your weak fingers. For instance, if your index finger is 1 and your ring finger is 3, just keep doing this: 3-1-3-1-3-1-3-1, holding the 1 and pulling off with the 3. Do the same with the pinky. Do it with every combination...including the dreaded 3-2-3-2-3-2.

I remember never using my pinky at all when I played, and this exercise made me start using my pinky.

Yeah, everyone should become proficient at doing their own setups. For one, most techs will not wait for a truss adjustment to completely take shape, and part of action adjustment is using both the bridge and neck relief in tandem. For another, if the tech has meat hands, the intonation will be set flat; if the player has meat hands, then the intonation will be set sharp. Finally, it's simple to master.

The harmonic at the 12th fret is not the pitch you adjust, though. It's the fretted 12th fret. The harmonic node is based on the open string length, so if you use the harmonic method, you tune the string using the harmonic and then you adjust the intonation based on the 12th fret note's comparison with the harmonic.

You're right about the 12th fret that was my bad. And yes you must wait a pretty long while for the neck to settle after turning the truss rod and no one getting paid a flat fee is gonna an hour or more in between quarter turns when the fine tuning comes around.

Picked this gem up on the nylon guitar recently:

Just the intro, chorus and then improvised some chords for the electric guitar sections. The tablature seemed quite off so half was just by ear. Really great song, great band too.

I used to pick up songs by ear all the time, I've sort of lost that passion now though and will go straight to tablature but it did help me a lot to develop my ear.

I am really starting to enjoy my nylon guitars again. I love the simplicity in the design, durability and the low maintenance.

No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.

Been enjoying the Axe Fx 3 a LOT, but the feel in room just didn’t quite compare with the thump of my 5153 100s through a 2x12

Until

I added a 10 inch subwoofer to the monitor setup that I use for the Axe. If any of you use modelers, throw a sub in the mix to get a bit of that amp in the room sound, because it really did the trick. The low chugs of a high gain patch really hits you like an amp, it was an instant smile.

Eh, the best thing I've found is to just run the modeler into a tube power amp and guitar cabinet. My Kemper running into the fryette power station and into a cab sounds amazing. I really want a VHT two ninety two for some stereo enhugeness but I just dropped a load and a half on a new custom SLO.

Well yeah, that’s probably ideal.

My axe/computer setup is a bit away from my amp/cab setup and I like having the usb setup for recording/access to axe edit.

I should probably run some cables across the room and give that a try too

What size monitors are you using? Mine are 8s and I haven't felt the need to get the sub... yet.

Having never owned monitors before (I know), I went with 5s to be safe. They sound great, plenty of power, but definitely missing that ‘something’. The sub fixed that.

I reckon you'd be a fan of 8s. Yamaha HS8 is what I use.

In other news this is the closest I've heard to the real thing. Incredible.

New signal chain:

Deluxe Whammy/Drop>Polytune>Caline Pure Sky>Mooer A7 ******t Verb>Joyo Baatsin Multi Drive>DOD Carcosa Fuzz >Behringer Super Fuzz>Mooer Black Secret>Noise Gate>Polara Reverb>Boss Chorus Ensemble

I'm "done" at this point (or so I tell myself now lol) but srs this gets me every sound I need. From here if I ever needed more shaping I'd probably be better served by moving to a Helix/Kemper/Axefx.

Only potential upgrade is the pedalboard. Proud of this homemade one but may jump to metal someday.

Lookin' sweet! Straight path into an amp or utilizing any in an effects loop?

I had a homemade board, then threw it away during the last move. I'm only playing at home now, I don't play live anywhere or lug gear to friend's places to play so my pedals are just sitting on the carpet in front of my amp. Though when I go down the rabbit hole of watching pedal reviews it does make me want to get a metal board too.

No effects loop on my amp. Same, I play at home and don't gig so I don't care that much about how it looks, was more a fun project - plus I had the wood leftover from something so only cost was the velcro.
Smooth Seas don't make Strong Sailors. Keep your head up.

Ive been playing through my computer for a while. Had podfarm 2.0 for ~10 years, finally looked into what other amp sims where out there. There are A TON of free metal amp sims and impulse reponses (IRs) that are incredible.

- STL emissary (free)
-lepou has several free amps, I really like their engl powerball sim (free)

If you are looking for some sick metal amp sims, I would check out the offerings of audio assault. Their hellbeast and Sigma amps are like $7 each right now. they come with very good IR's, as well as tube screamers & effects in their standalone packages.

If you are struggling to get a good tone w/ I would also highly recommend the "guitar tone mastery" course by chernobyl studios. worth every penny. it goes through a lot of stuff I would have never thought of on my own. it also comes with several impulse response packages that are killer.

FYI, IR's are a good 70% of your tone when playing direct. If you dont want to spend money on amp sims, it is worth your time to invest a little in some IRs.

Ive been struggling to get a good country style tone through direct input, does anyone know of some good cheap/free tweed amp sims and IRs, or a good delay/compressor sim to use? most of the delay and compressors I find have wayyyy to many settings.

Also, you can get DIRT cheap guitar accessories through aliexpress. Im talking guitar pedals/clones for $20, brass saddles, nuts, locking tuners, pots, etc.
