He was a POW, they had no idea if he was dead or alive and years were passing. You expect them to just keep waiting indefinitely or move on with their lives?
Every single one of you would have moved on as well. Don't be hypocrites.

It’s def brutal that she cheated while he was tortured, soooo much worse that she gets nearly half of his money for nothing. Hopefully at least the oldest daughter gave her living hell for it.
This body holding me, be my reminder here that I am not alone.
Makes me feel eternal, all this Pain is an Illusion.

devils advocate ....
- children
- he was probably dead
- money
she was probably looking out for the best interest of her children, and looking for another husband/wallet (not just slooting around).
back then, social security was very little so marriage, especially for a woman, was very important. add a number of children to that and i can see her reasoning.

The amount of women who can stay dedicated to a military spouse is tiny. Society doesnt even try to produce those values in women anymore so its even more rare.
The biggest issue with this is surrendering his pay to her. She earned none of it and when she stepped out of the marriage forfeited her right to his protection and provisions.
This would probably stop if women were givennothingupon divorce.

Thank you everyone for your wonderful comments. I am Col. Stirm's oldest grandchild (30 years old), and his oldest child Lorrie's oldest son.
To those that had expressed a desire to return a bracelet to Col. Stirm, or for any other information, please feel free to email me.
To those that touched on his first wife's (and my grandmother) "infidelity", I think everyone should know that his children and their mother did not know the status of their father/husband. He was a POW for 6 years, and for 6 long years his 4 children grew up being told by the military that they had no idea where their father was or if he was alive. They were never told that he was being held as a POW, or if he would ever return, or he was even alive or dead. The same went for his wife, who had struggled as a homemaker who had never paid bills or managed family matters until her husband left for Vietnam. After several years of heartache and struggle, life played it's course and a new relationship developed for Loretta. The "Dear John" letter was written so that Loretta could come to terms that her husband was not coming back and that life was moving on, she wrote it expecting him to never see it, as she heartbreakingly believed she would never see him again. Upon his return, she broke off her relationship and attempted to salvage her broken family now that all of the pieces had physically been put back together. Unfortunately, the marriage would not survive, and both remarried (Col. Stirm divorced in the last 10 years, and Loretta passed away from Cancer in 2010, still married to the same man she had met while Col. Stirm was a POW). This is an extremely sensitive family matter, and I beg all who choose to comment publicly, to please refrain from passing judgement on either person with regards to the relationship between Col. Robert Stirm & Loretta. Thank you.

I agree with those saying that her moving on in this case is understandable. Dude was a POW for 5 years and she had a couple kids to look out for. Did they know if he was a POW rather than KIA? If they didn't, you can't really blame her. I'm sure it was tough as a single mom to raise kids back then. Very few women would simply never remarry.
The alimony ruling is completely fukked though. Circumstances aside, why was she even entitled to it if she had a new husband? And 43% sounds high af.
I feel for this guy. Lost his wife, kids, money, and was probably left with some terrible PTSD/psychological trauma. I wonder how well most POWs fared upon returning to the States.

Good for her! Life's too short to wait for someone being tortured. Women have got to stop apologizing for when their needs aren't being met.

So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

I wouldn't be surprised if a dude did the same for a missing wife.
If someone has a sex drive, and desire for companionship, then expecting them to wait indefinitely for a possibly return (at the time, the military had officially no idea where he was) IMO is unreasonable.
Who wants be celibate and without companionship for the rest of their life? Look at what it does to people's mental health... Look at the phuckin incel community!

Then even if you accept he's dead after 2 years time has passed, how long do you wait before you "move on"? You just move on at the drop of a hat like that? That's still cold as sh*t even if you don't consider it wrong at that point. It would take any normal person who actually cared at least 3 years after the acceptance of death before even wanting to move on I would think.
Look at it this way, if you own a dog and it dies how long do you wait before getting a new one? There's 2 groups of people when this happens. Ones who immediately go out and get a new dog because they can't bear to not have one (aka I'm a selfish c*nt who just needs to have companionship non-stop no matter who or what it is) and the ones who wait at least a couple years to mourn the dog they loved before starting new.
And that's with a dog. Now how long do you think group 2 would need to mourn the death of a husband? Group 1, the move on immediately group, was only ever in the relationship for themselves. Even if it's not wrong to do it still tells you a lot about them as a person.
Basic psychology here which some of you disregard as useless.
By the way, if she only moved on because she thought he was dead then why didn't she make the effort to get back with him once learning he was alive? Surely she still loved him if death is what cause the separation and decision to move on. Getting that back would be hard to ignore if it was real. Truth is it wasn't

Secondly, did you not read the timeline I posted above? A normal person doesn't give up they're dead for at least 2 years. After acceptance of death, a normal person who cared takes at least 2-3 years AFTER those first 2 years of denial to grieve.
5 years isn't that far fetched to wait in this scenario if you have any semblance of character.
Those of you who move on after someone dies a week later aren't "wrong", you're just a selfish c*nt. Plain and simple.

What are you basing that psychological timeline on?5 years isn't that far fetched to wait in this scenario if you have any semblance of character.
The military tell you that your wife is missing, and they have no idea if they are dead or alive, IMO most people would not hold out indefinitely for a return. I wouldn't blame you for beginning to move on, especially if you are a single parent. If You Don't Like To Talk About Your Feelings, This Might Help...

At least 2 years you hold on hope he's alive.
Then even if you accept he's dead after 2 years time has passed, how long do you wait before you "move on"? You just move on at the drop of a hat like that? That's still cold as sh*t even if you don't consider it wrong at that point. It would take any normal person who actually cared at least 3 years after the acceptance of death before even wanting to move on I would think

This was a very long time ago, in a time of war, with a family full of kids to provide for. I'd expect the mindset to be a little different from today sir. Spouses went to war and there was a very real consideration that they may not come back alive.
You need to put your mind in the context of when this all took place, I know it's hard coming from a position of privilege.
