AMA - Old head, know-it-all, veteran miscer.

What's up fellas! Been a while since I posted anything. Slow at work today. I'll keep this up as long as its active.

In case you don't recognize me
- been training regularly for over 20 years
- competed in powerlifting and strongman for almost 10 years. retired from competition in 2015
- coaching all sorts of people for 6 years part time

I can't answer any questions that will break forum rules

He posts a lot on ******** and Instagram. I've hung out with Mike a few times. Hes a good dude

615 squat, 500 bench, 705 deadlift. Still very near those numbers and most were done when I was 260ish
I've dealt with a lot over the year. Currently dealing with persistent elbow pain that seems to migrate to different areas weekly. Its super annoying.
TMs?
I train on weekdays now. Most days I end up training with clients and walking them through various things they need. Mainly focused on keeping stress to a minimum and restoring some health markers before I focus on dropping 10lbs later this year. I'm pretty lean already but the systemic stress reduction brought by a reduction in body weight will be good for me longevity wise

Is the bloatmaxx strongman life worth it? It's tempting to just go HAM dreamerbulk when gyms reopen and try to get strong as possible, hit 300lbs bloat status, but not sure I want to have to buy a whole new wardrobe and potentially fuk up my joints etc

I get a yearly check up with my PCP. My dad had prostate cancer so its a priority for me

Only happened once that I can remember. At the end of 2019, I had to quit "supplements" cold turkey so I could get bloods for TRT

My test levels were 19 ng/dl. Normal is ~400. lulz

I'm going to assume your goals are primarily aesthetic. If its something strength based, my advice will change slightly. Next I'm going to assume you're natural and plan to stay that way. If that's not the case, my advice is totally different. Feel free to correct me on either and I'll adjust my recommendations accordingly.

Do not over eat. Getting fat will not facilitate your goals. Scale chasing as a natural is a recipe for fattness. Putting on muscle is not something your body likes to do and being higher in the body fat range makes it nearly impossible unless you're a total noob.

The majority of your focus should be on your training. You need to micromanage it. I'd highly recommend investing in the new Renaissance Periodization hypertrophy book. Its really good and walks you through how to properly set up your training. Just going in and YOLOing it every day is wheel spinning.

Diet is easy. Focus primarily on lean meats, fruit and veg. Add in carbs a little before training and a lot after. Eat enough to gain but maintain body composition. If you start getting a bit chubby, do a 2-4 week mini-cut and get back on the gain train after.

I was thinking more focusing on strength rather than aesthetics and potentially doing actual strongman training, maybe amateur competition. Is there such thing as natty strongman?

Is there an actual book published? I could only find The Renaissance Diet 2.0.

Periodization is essentially the idea behind 5/3/1 correct? But applied to hypertrophy the rep ranges would be bigger?

I would get your base back in the gym first. At least get back to where you were. It shouldn't take more than a few months.

I'm not sure man if there are natural orgs in the UK. There was in the US but they never really tested. Luke Davies used to post here. He's a top amateur strongman in the UK. Reach out to him and ask.

Strongman is very skill based rather than raw strength. You could be competitive in your weight class as a natural if you really focus on event training.

https://renaissanceperiodization.com...rophy-training

Periodization is essentially a plan for progression. You can apply that to training, diet, drugs, etc

Hey, coincidentally also need to lose 10 pounds, but I'm undoubtedly fatter.

Out of the gym way too long (going on 2 years), now I have access to a well equipped gym and just need to make a plan and work it.

Do you happen to have a link, or thoughts on upper body work to strengthen the upper body (back/shoulders/tris mainly) and improve posture?

I tend to be tight through my pecs and roll my shoulders in (more the right than left). Don't care about targeting larger traps or bis. And an annoying left wrist/healing from a break.

Old lady if it matters. And not offended if you CBA with this since it is what you do for your profession.

TIA.
