The problem is that most forget to practice outside the rules of BJJ/MMA tournament fights. You have to keep your wits about you but getting ahold of one of their fingers or putting your own finger in their eye is almost always enough to break their hold.

Third of all, leverage. A manlet pulling a sumo deadlift with 5 inch ROM can probably deadlift more than a giant freak athlete NFL guy. I'd love to see that manlet in a physical confrontation with said NFL guy. The manlet will totally win cause he's "stronger", just LOL.

I’ve out wrestled and grappled with smaller/weaker but way more accomplished athletes and handled them relatively easily.

In for a bunch of people who don't train BJJ to talk about how worthless BJJ is.

After one year of BJJ: EVERY white belt knows how to single leg, double leg and uchimata. EVERY white belt knows how to move from side control into mount. EVERY white belt knows how to take the back and sink a choke.

"But but BJJ doesn't work against weapons!" Find me a martial art that does.
"But but BJJ doesn't work against eye pokes!" Find me one video of a streetfight where an untrained fighter beats a trained fighter with eyepokes.
"But but BJJ doesn't work against muh benchpress!" Just lol.

meh - worst thing anyone can do in an altercation is be over-confident. Especially a "street-fight" where there are no rules. People will bite, claw your eyes, throw chit, use w/e the fuk they can. Sure - knowing martial arts and ways to defend yourself increase your chances of success but don't ever presume just cause you know something you're good 90% of the time.

Violence should be the absolute last resort and your goal should be to incapacitate (potentially kill) your adversary as quickly and efficiently as possible, you're not being judged for how cool you look when you're defending your life. Avoid fights at all costs. Seen to many friends and strangers straight up get paralyzed, die for stupid chit. Sucker punch to the head, head hits concrete wrong = dead.

Dat feel when having placed at multiple bjj competitons and grappled for years, but cannot perform Unchimata properly.

Yeah, but put that manblet in the cage with his former self before lifting and see what happens.

ITT: A bunch of ***s who have never trained before

To answer your question OP it depends heavily on the person you are fighting and their skill set. Someone with roughly the same strength/weight and athleticism as you with no real training? 3-6 months. Someone signifigantly more athletic/stronger than you? It was around 2 years before I could submit most varsity wrestlers easily and a couple d3 football players. Beyond that, its really hard to say.

Honestly, I have no idea how well trained they were. But I've personally gotten out of a rear naked choke at least three times and a guillotine twice with single digit locks while I was doing security in bars.

A lot of factors going into this.

If it’s one and one and you’re going against an untrained grappler, probably 1-2 years (whenever you get your blue belt really) to be upwards of a 90% chance.

Going against an experienced grappler, then who knows. Size and athleticism will be a huge factor.

A striker with a good takedown defense would be a tough outing, but if you can clinch and throw from the clinch, then advantage grappler.

If his buddies around, then your 800m time matters more.

Flopping on your ass like a bitch will get you kicked in the head or stomped. Hugging a leg forever trying to pull someone down will get you elbowed to the back of the head, neck, and spine

There's a reason why BJJ guys didn't do well in pride, and it still had lots of rules to protect them
Royce Gracie would like a word with you.

Wrestling is great for takedowns, pressure, and explosive athleticism. However, that wrestler against a good bjj, good bjj will win. Wrestlers don’t have subs.

Really the best would be bjj + catch wrestling.

With BJJ, we literally fight every time and often it’s against dudes who out weigh you by 50+ pounds. As a white belt you learn to remain calm while getting smashed, to control your breathing, and defend.

I think it’s a horrible idea to pull guard in a street fight though. The best thing about BJJ though is that you learn how to escape or sweep from bottom position so you can get out and into technical standup or into sweep into mount so you can ground and pound. The odds of me doing a submission in a street fight is slim because I don’t know when his buddies are going to try and crater my head, or if he’ll attempt to power bomb me.

and at what weight difference do you think you start seeing diminishing returns?

Probably 50-100+ pounds for me.

This is just from my experience with others. For perspective, I’m 6’0, 200-205lbs, at around 14% bf, with my lifting background in predominantly strength training, paired with specific anaerobic and aerobic training for cardio. So I’m pretty athletic. I’m also a white belt with about 9 months of total training. So results will vary for others.

At around 2-3 months of training, average bigger untrained guys, (250 - 300lbs), I can escape and get into a dominate position, or just flat out get into a dominate position.

Equal level white belts (250 -300lbs), it can go either way. If I get dominate position, it can be a draw or I can get choke, but I’ll rely on my cardio more for them to gas. At that weight discrepancy, if they get a dominate position it is very difficult for me to escape, especially if they have a good pressure game, and it requires so much energy for me to try and escape that I’ll gas, so often I’ll just work to try to slowly work my way back into guard. It is extremely exhausting to roll with these guys, which probably speaks more to my lack of technique.

Higher level belt, they could be 50lbs lighter than me and I’m in serious trouble and probably getting tapped. There are a few huge dudes at my gym (6-4 265ish) that are purple belts and they can **** me up at will. It’s extremely hard for me to get any type of momentum and the pressure they exert is unbelievable. Having a 265lb dude using shoulder pressure on my jaw is very uncomfortable to say the least.

I think, others who don’t have the same athletic background as me, it could be a smaller range, maybe 25-50lbs.

Assuming they don’t have a gun or knife and they don’t train and they don’t hit first and their buddies don’t jump in, etc. you get what I’m saying.

You’ll never be unbeatable in a “street fight”. Unless you’re Superman.

Bjj as self defense vs the average guy even bigger than you can be very effective. One good clinch/takedown. Usually you won’t even need a submission if you pull off an o goshi or a hard osoto gari. Fight ends when they land.

Good luck with your "skills" fighting off a group of men or someone with a knife/gun. Most street fights aren't in a controlled setting and a fair one on one fight...

Someone that wrestled in high school has a way better chance of being a good street brawler...

Your ignorance of the sport is hilarious. Also, not a single fukkin thing in the world is going to protect you any better than the other against a .45, unless you start practicing your quick draw like a fukkin cowboy. honkhonk

That is a great well reasoned response. I've had similar discussions with people and they claim they think there is no point where weight would make a difference.

I'd rep but on spread
