atlanta is like that too except it's worse. forget which area exactly but under some bridge near emory midtown is homeless people up and down on both sides of the sidewalk. fkn groces me out

Is it even that surprising anymore? There are a lot more homeless on the streets in DFW than there used to be and I've heard Austin is as bad or worse.

4.4% Deep Poverty
This is based on the Supplemental Poverty Measure:
Our poverty projections use an expanded poverty measure that considers not only a family’s cash income but also their tax payments, tax credits, in-kind benefits such as nutrition help, and the stimulus checks authorized in December that people began to receive in early 2021 (Fox, Glassman, and Pacas 2020). This metric is the Supplemental Poverty Measure, or SPM.
Meaning that those percentages given above include government benefits and we still have 13.7% that are poor or in deep poverty, or IOW about 1 in 7 Americans.

The above is an estimate for 2021. I looked for a good source for 2020 that would be backwards looking and didn't find one, maybe because all the data hasn't been collected yet, or just because it was a very strange year.

I know a lot of people think that being poor isn't really all that bad because the government steps in and pays your bills for you.
Only one in four of those eligible to receive federal housing assistance actually do so.This has precipitated a structural housing crisis with 2.5 to 3.5 million people who are living in shelters, transitional housing centers and tent cities.
Just because a program exists doesn't mean you can actually get into it.

Brah Cali is 10x worse. Entire riverbeds were tent cities, hundreds upon hundreds of them. Cops rousted them all out and they migrated to parks. Then they tried housing them in hotels. Too bad they got rid of 90% of the affordable hotels these people might have been living in 10 years ago. Look up Santa Ana Riverbed if you want to see.
