I used to buy horse meat 40 pounds at a time at a butcher where I used to live. It came out to around 2.50$ a pound because it had not yet caught on. There was no better meat to eat, fat to protein ratio, iron, etc. Amazing stuff. I used to have the butcher shop divide it into 1 pound packets and freeze them. The majority of my gains were the direct result of eating horse meat daily.

I haven't purchased it in years as that butcher's prices steadily increased rendering it no longer worth it. For years now, chicken and turkey breast has been my primary staple. Since I own hens now, I get my fats from eggs on a daily basis.

Horse and bison meat are both incredible sources of nutrition and protein.

From what I see, horse meat is still a touchy subject due to humans emotional connection.

I reduce it by sustaining my existence by maintaining the one thing that truly affects animals these days. Habitat loss. I dont need to plow a field to grow stuff and get rid of the native animals homes. I dont need to concrete over everything due to urban sprawl and kill animals in the process. Cities are devastating to animals and consumption of habitat causes a much worse affect on populations than hunting and trapping and managing populations as you go.
Here is something you miss. Its not individual animals that matter as much as overall populations. Sound wildlife management means the ability to harvest animals sustainably. If you want to hang your hat on "helping animals" campaign against human population expansion.

Vegan = farming= death and destruction to a variety of critters. pesticides, crushed rodents...you know the gulls following a combine or tiller? I went to a liberal university. Granola crunching vegans galore. i organized gun courses because the interest in sustainable meat was so high. We have traplines here that have harvested the same numbers of animals since the 60s.

It might be hard, but wait till I have my life on the trapline video out, and reserve judgement till you see people just like yourself (one was vegan) come to full realization that they don't have to choose between veganism and buying meat. I am hooking two people from the course up with their trapping license actually. And careful to lump hunters in with your average meat eater. (some hunters just drink beer, blast at chit, send the deer to the butcher and drink more beer, but thats another argument lol)

Some people don't like killing. I say if you cant kill it or have some issue dealing with death you should be vegan fi it makes you feel better. Srs. I am Hutrapper. I am self aware, I am a part of the world, and I kill and eat animals.

I don't have an extensive car kit. Lots of people around, just warm enough clothes.

As for 3 items. I am assuming that people are looking for me, have a general idea of where i am, and I will be found within a week.

1. Survival necklace I usually bring in my pocket. I can make fire easily, it has wire on it, and a compass. I count as one item. (inb4)

2. Sleeping bag. Assuming I will be found within a week or so, a way to keep warm and sleep.

3. Depending on season, a tarp, or an axe. A tarp for any time it is warm. To keep rain off while I wait. An axe for winter, as rain is less of a factor. Axe lets you access dry wood inside trees and fashion a decent fire reflecting shelter. A tarp would work too, but winter = fire...


If only three, that would be them. I can drink bad water, because most stuff that would harm you takes about a week to make you sick. After that the plan is to be found and get anitibiotics. Beaver fever (giardia) isnt fun, but survivable. I have had it. The chits and stomach cramps of biblical proportions...but a blip on the radar.. And for a week I dont need food. For longer term, a pot would be invaluable.

As for searchers finding you, first thing is to make an easily lit fire beacon for smoke and fire at night.

Did this many times in wilderness survival. Pretty cool to light that sucker and have thick smoke almost instantly.

I try and be kind to my eyes. Only have one pair. That means polarized sunglasses.

And the natives (inuit anyway) would use carved bone "glasses" that only had small slits in them. The slits would limit the amount of light that could enter the eye. Otherwise you could go snow blind from the added UV rays bouncing off the snow.

Would legit burn your retinas. Feels like hot sand poured in your eye. Similar to looking at a welding arc and not wearing a welding helmet. I was arced once from an aluminum welder. Sucked ass, and it was a mild case. Over a day of bright sun the snow will do the same thing. Next morning you wake up and cant see fuk all.

The cabin is on my registered trap line. I have a work permit allowing me to build and use it for as long as I trap. (Hopefully till I am old). Intended use is skinning and processing Furs and animals.

I can use it generally for anything, so long as outdoors related. It's a 15 min boat ride from where I keep my boat, and a 1 mile hike in from the road.

Trapperbrah, with the season now changing to spring are there new hazards like certain animals that come out or is it relatively safer than winter? I was thinking a video idea for you could be on the seasonal changes, or even monthly changes.

For city/suburbcels it's as easy as turning on the air conditioning or a fan when it gets warm and the heating or a fire when it gets cold. But for you there must be much more to think about.
