Funny part is that any alien race that has developed technology to travel across a span of light years would be so far ahead of us it wouldn't even be fair. Would ravage us without a fight.

Idk if we’ve been visited or not. If we have I lean more towards them being avatars more so than biological beings. Biological beings would be behind it somewhere though like someone else said, that’s if we aren’t in a simulation. It’s certainly interesting though. If we can’t even get along over different shades of skin color we gon die to some alien overlords.
This body holding me, be my reminder here that I am not alone.
Makes me feel eternal, all this Pain is an Illusion.

Weird right. Just cuz we cant do something doesnt mean it'll be impossible forever.

Kelvin himself said it is impossible heavier than air machines can not fly. Didnt take long

Idk I think it could be real and I’m afraid of aliens. I’m scared they will land in my area and invade. I’m almost certain aliens will be hostile and will experiment on us or kills us. The way we do with insects.
Absolutely not. Any creatures intelligent enough to travel here and make contact would almost certainly already have all of their resource and energy needs met from other planets and asteroids. It would be much more logical that they would try to keep their distance and be of help when possible, which is how we would behave some day if we were able to achieve the same thing.

I don’t believe at all that our alien overlords will be benign and empathic and helpful. I hope so but I don’t think so. It’s much more likely they will destroy us or experiment on us. I don’t believe life and survival are ultimately driven by good forces of empathy. The essence of survival is much more brutal.
A better comparison would be how do civilized modern societies treat people in the amazon and other areas that are uncontacted tribes? We leave them alone and would only interfere if it was truly needed. Of course, there are pirate types of renegade groups who might try to abuse them or kill them if they interfere with logging or something, however, we have to assume an alien race advanced enough to travel here would be at least on par with our most advanced civilizations and most likely more empathetic.

Like when we see water we don’t regard the individual drops or the molecules as having any separate significance. We just see the body of water. Huh? There's hundreds and hundreds of people, former military and pilots, and dying people who have confessed to ufo and alien stories they bid their whole lives before that. Some don't even wait that long. Hard evidence is obviously missing but i mean regarding the subject that can be a bit understandable.

LOL. Nope. The only reason to visit other planets is 1) a quest of knowledge or 2) access to their resources. No civilization with technology great enough to travel here is in need of our knowledge. We have only 4 outcomes. We end up in their zoos. We end up their slaves. We end up in their food chain. Or we end up dead and they take the full resources of the planet for themselves. The idea that they'd come all this way, in peace, just to give us stuff to make our lives better is about as believable as Cortes traveling to central America just to the Aztecs about higher mathematics. Cortes went there looking for gold. He found it. He also found a backward, bloodthirsty civilization. He tried to avoid conflict, but found it impossible. So he conquered them easily. If aliens showed up here, we'd be the Aztecs. We'd stand no chance unless our sheer numbers could overwhelm them.

The old gym I used to go to, the owner was convinced that we were put on earth to mine gold for aliens, because aliens ate it for food - and then we got too advanced and just did our own thing.

He said that the governments were aware of aliens, so thats why kids toys /movies/pack lunchboxes were all alien themed and friendly - to get a few generations used to aliens, so when they realised it - nobody was scared and panicked haha. Crackhead..

To be fair though, if they did announce aliens - wouldnt that completely cripple religion? Or would people just be like "BUT GOD CREATED THE ALIENS TO! HE MADE EVERYTHING HE WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS"

You can't compare a pre-industrial civilizations actions to that of a post-atomic age one. If we were to find life on Mars in 5 years we would not try to eradicate it, eat it, or enslave it. You might have a situation where a more primitive species is destroyed because it somehow poses a threat to a more advanced species, but that would be very very unlikely.

I do not believe it 100% either. But it is equally hard to disprove.
He says The Matrix was a misreading of his ideas though, but that does bring up the point that it started earlier than 2003 because clearly The Matrix was made before 2003, so on that point I was wrong. I don't remember ANY of this simulation theory nonsense before that movie though. I never heard about it in the 70's or 80's, that's for sure. I don't recall any sci-fi stories about it, nor it ever coming up in conversation or discussion in HS or college. For all intents and purposes, it was not a mainstream idea until The Matrix.

If it stood in our way for colonizing Mars, we'd eradicate it. If it helped us survive the colonization of Mars, we'd eat it. If we needed it to do work for us we couldn't do, we'd enslave it. For sure. In case 1, imagine a fungus that was toxic to us. In case 2, imagine a moss which was nutritious and grew easily there. In case 3, imagine a beast of burden like a horse that we'd capture and use for physical labor. In all 3 cases... alien life. In all 3 cases... we'd justify our actions. Imagine an alien race so advanced that they see us as little more than beasts of burden. Not enlightened like they are. Or maybe they have no concept of right and wrong. In any event, if they'd devoted considerable resources to coming here, I think the reasons would be more likely malignant than benign.

Correct. The idea itself is ancient but the movie made it mainstream.

But honestly there are other movies like that too like Truman Show.

Anyways nice discussing/ arguing this with you. Most people end up insulting, resorting to racism or insulting female relatives.

We have discovered many new species on Earth and continue to do so and yet never seek to do any of those things to them. I think we agree on the fact though that if it posed a true threat, ei; some exotic fungus that could potentially destroy humanity if it got back to Earth, we would attempt to destroy it for self preservation. Obviously there are no guarantees, but I personally think that the odds would strongly favor a neutral to positive encounter.

modern sim theory as codified by nick bostrom is just a hypothesis-response to the fermi paradox.

there are like 25 plus different theories

they are generally like:

aliens are hiding
there are no aliens
aliens do not explore the galaxy (all of them decide this independently)

you can think of his as a version of number 1

Aliens wouldn't be violent, humans ****e chemical imbalances in nutrition causes violence another reason the government doesn't correctly inform us of correct nutrition it keeps us suppressed/restless/ perfect environment for lucid dreaming

The scale of the universe is too damn big for there to be a even a slight chance of alien visitation.
