No, it was 100% Obama. The guy was an America-hating marxist. He brought in all sorts of America-haters with him in 2008. He started purging the bureaucracy and military of those who didn't share his views and secretly putting into place all sorts of policies and rules designed to chip away at social cohesion. The media refused to cover any of it. In 2012, he unleashed all of them to do their worst, once he didn't have to worry about re-election. He also stayed in DC during Trump's administration in order to secretly run the opposition to Trump. He and his people met constantly with the media to set each day's narrative. He played a central role in everything directed at removing Trump from office. We've endured 12 long years of the jug-eared Kenyan marxist working to destroy this country from within and without, and it appears he's also a central figure behind the scenes of this Biden* administration. He hates America. His hatred for America is what defines him. That man should have never been allowed anywhere near the levers of power in this country. The fact that the democRATs gleefully put him in power tells you all you need to know about them.

Aside from the partisan bs side of this, why would it be bad that DC was its own state? It's always seemed odd to me that it doesn't reside within a state.

Washington DC is currently not a state. As such, it has no representation in the US Senate. The US Government has two houses of Congress. The House of Representatives (AKA "The House") and the Senate. Each state gets a number of Representatives based on population (California has the most, Wyoming has the least). The House can pass bills on a simple majority (50%, plus 1). THose bills have to be passed by the Senate and also signed by the President to become laws.

Each state gets 2 Senators (100 total). Most laws require a simple majority vote in the Senate to pass (51, or 50 plus the Vice President, who breaks ties in the Senate). Currently in the US, the Senate is 50/50 (Republicans/Democrats).

Washington DC is 95% Democrat. By making it a state, Democrats automatically add 2 Senate seats, giving them a majority (52/50). THey also plan to try adding Puerto Rico as a state, which is also heavily Democrat, giving Democrats a 54/50 advantage.

Thank you, my friend. Responded as if I knew nothing of politics, so I appreciate all terminology used.

I figured as much the issue would be since it's a heavy Dem state (not even remotely purple) that it will upset people.

2 more senate seats added. DC is 95% democRAT. Those 2 senate seats will be permanently held by democRATs.

Current senate is 100 seats. Each state gets 2. By adding a state, you raise the total to 102. They want to add Puerto Rico too. That'll be another 2 seats that are permanently democRAT. Right now, the senate is: 48 seats for the democRATs, 2 seats for independents who caucus with the democRATs (they'd be shut out of power if they didn't caucus with one side or the other, but since both independents are socialists or former democRATs, they would only caucus with the democRATs), and 50 seats for the GOP. In other words, the senate is a tie right now. Adding 4 democRAT seats gives them a 54-50 edge.

Point of clarification - Wyoming is tied for the least with both Dakotas, Montana, Vermont, and Alaska

DC isn’t a state, therefore has no voice in congress.

This bill would reshape DC to only include federal buildings, and the rest of the area will no longer be DC and become a new state.

Miscers and other people only read headlines, so they think this is making our capitol a state, so they’re against it.

It doesn't make sense to make it a state, it would make sense to redraw the borders around it (I don't think there needs to be any seat changes) if the issue is really about representation why do they need to add any new seats?... obviously adding new seats is about a power grab, there is no other explanation. It's very clear. Obviously its a power grab for democrats so they support it and republicans don't.

What do you mean redraw the borders? They’re redrawing DC so that DC will only be federal buildings (or something close to that) the area where 700,000 people live will become a state. Our nations capital will still not be a state.

I agree that it’s a power move, Republicans would be the ones doing this if it was the other way around and dems would be complaining about it

Why do you need to create a new state that is the size of a few miles? Wouldn't it make way more sense to give that to the adjacent state (maryland?) This is the logical approach which was already stated here, not sure why you didn't understand what I meant? I am assuming you are just being difficult.

Republicans has everything for two years but nobody tried to expand the Supreme Court. Nobody tried to make upstate NY a separate state, or Northern California. Republicans wouldn't do this, and the proof is that they didn't do this.

Virgina took their land back in 1846. That's why DC is only north of the Potomac. The land (69 square miles) it occupies today was all given by Maryland.

No, that’s a thousand times more difficult.

Maryland would have to consent. The federal government doesn’t have the power to make states take more land.

Those things are different than making existing territories and districts states. The people of upstate New York already have a voice in Congress, in DC they don’t, false comparison

D.C. has representation in Congress. Just not in the Senate.

I live in CT. I have zero representation in Congress. I mean there is no chance of anyone that represents my state ever voting for what I would want.

There are counties in CA that vote 75% Republican. Do you think the two Democrat Senators from California represent them?
