Aside from the partisan bs side of this, why would it be bad that DC was its own state? It's always seemed odd to me that it doesn't reside within a state.

Each state gets 2 Senators (100 total). Most laws require a simple majority vote in the Senate to pass (51, or 50 plus the Vice President, who breaks ties in the Senate). Currently in the US, the Senate is 50/50 (Republicans/Democrats).
Washington DC is 95% Democrat. By making it a state, Democrats automatically add 2 Senate seats, giving them a majority (52/50). THey also plan to try adding Puerto Rico as a state, which is also heavily Democrat, giving Democrats a 54/50 advantage.

I figured as much the issue would be since it's a heavy Dem state (not even remotely purple) that it will upset people.

Current senate is 100 seats. Each state gets 2. By adding a state, you raise the total to 102. They want to add Puerto Rico too. That'll be another 2 seats that are permanently democRAT. Right now, the senate is: 48 seats for the democRATs, 2 seats for independents who caucus with the democRATs (they'd be shut out of power if they didn't caucus with one side or the other, but since both independents are socialists or former democRATs, they would only caucus with the democRATs), and 50 seats for the GOP. In other words, the senate is a tie right now. Adding 4 democRAT seats gives them a 54-50 edge.

This bill would reshape DC to only include federal buildings, and the rest of the area will no longer be DC and become a new state.
Miscers and other people only read headlines, so they think this is making our capitol a state, so they’re against it.

I agree that it’s a power move, Republicans would be the ones doing this if it was the other way around and dems would be complaining about it

Maryland would have to consent. The federal government doesn’t have the power to make states take more land.

I live in CT. I have zero representation in Congress. I mean there is no chance of anyone that represents my state ever voting for what I would want.
There are counties in CA that vote 75% Republican. Do you think the two Democrat Senators from California represent them?
