hawaii bro checking in.

rental car companies are using the lack of inventory to justify increasing the rental car prices. when covid lock downs hit, there were too much rental cars sitting around and the rental car companies had to sell them or ship them to the mainland where they would be sold off. pictures below puts it into perspective. if covid didnt happen, most of the cars in the picture below would be out on the road or in a hotel somewhere.

the only alternative was to get a uhaul or uber/taxi. unless you plan on staying in waikiki, uber/taxis would be the only alternative, which would add up.

This. Did two weeks in Kauai and never ran out of things to do or see.

Why would you go to Oahu? It'd be the last one I ever visited if I were going to go to all of em. Big island for the volcanoes, Maui for the beaches, Kauai for the rain forest. Oahu for the...cities?

Yeah, the city for me. Oahu seems to be the most diverse - city, beach, mountains, jungle, history pearl harbor, etc.

Lived in Oahu for 5 years, not counting visiting my parents when they lived there. You gotta go on the windward side or North shore. LOL if you only stay in Waikiki/downtown and think that's all there is. I never stayed in Molokai, but flew all around it and did a load flight to ferry a rare beak nose whale to Oahu to see why it beached itself (dead), but Molokai was one of my favorites to do training flights around. That's where they had the/a leper colony. Kauai I remember it for the "grand canyon" , we were actually allowed to fly through it. Big Island, flew through it around the mountains...I'm not rich, I'm not poor but on flights like that I am like I can't believe they are paying me to do this.

if you have to worry about $700/day to pay for a rental you shouldn't be taking a vacation to somewhere you can't afford

Maybe try the next state over.

Well, yeah, but then again, you’re in vacation. You want to do things on your own time without rushing. Same goes for public transportation; you’re pretty much doing things on someone else’s time. It’s always best when you have your own car. But then again, because if Covid last year, a lot of companies are trying to regain at least some of the money lost. And when the demand is there because of tourism, they can play with the prices. But when you really think about it, it’s ridiculous.

Good luck for real. I'm in some Hawaii travel groups so I can keep up on all the goings-on on the islands, and I keep seeing people being surprised when they reach the counter to pick up their car. But there are plenty who has no issues too, so it's seems vastly up to how returns/arrivals time out. Nothing like getting your vacation off to ****ty start.
