Tell me your favorite fiction book and I'll buy it right now.
Free online as it's out of copyright or you can pick up a cheap copy online.https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2701
For a first book I'd recommend Animal Farm, available free of copyright now -http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks01/0100011h.html
I'd suggest Meditations by Marcus Aurelius as necessary reading for anyone - Also free onlinehttps://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2680
Also, any Raymond Carver collection for some simple short stories. You can find individual stories online too I think.
If you're just starting out the most important thing is to be patient and do it without distraction srs. That will let you read deeply and get absorbed in the material. Block out 30 mins for it and see how it goes.
We live in a fukin golden age of information, the problem is sifting through all the chit and knowing where to put our most precious resource (time, not money).

My favorite thing about books is that you can learn to do basically anything with the right motivation. It's not easy either, really dense non-fiction or educational literature can be really boring and hard to get through. It's like lifting weights for your mind.
I've been meaning to get into more fiction and novels, but it's easier for me to just watch a movie. Sometimes I have to write and edit fiction for work, and that is kind of entertaining. I think years of writing technical chit for work have taught me to think about books as a practical resource instead of a source of joy or entertainment.

Fiction is overrated.
I only read practical books, mainly in the self-improvement category (which I'd include Meditations and philosophy).
Relationship books and emotional intelligence books are great too.
How to Tell a Story, etc.
I only read Fiction to understand references.
Shakespeare, Greek Tragedy, Dostoevsky

When Trump faces a reality she can't stand, she becomes highly emotional and illogical. Every crisis is met by histrionics, tantrums and an inability to deal with facts. "Its a HOAX! Its a FRAUD!"
The emotion then becomes the reality. Those of us with girlfriends are familiar with this phenomena. Donald Trump menstruating 24/7: "Blood coming out of his eyes, blood coming out of his WHEREVER."

Eh, I read books mainly just to limit my screen time, but if I’m being honest, you could also watch a documentary or a movie and get the same information/entertainment. Idk if there is really some mystical aspect that makes reading books > other forms of media

These are some writers I recommend to people who want to read “serious writing” but don’t read a lot.
Kurt Vonnegut, Raymond Chandler (GOAT private eye writer), George Orwell, William Gibson (a bit hard to follow but if you like cyberpunk pretty good), F Scott Fitzgerald, Paul Auster, Phillip K Dick, Hemingway, Haruki Murakami, John Updike (He wrote a lot of uneven stuff so stick to the prize winners like Rabbit Run), Kazuo Ishiguro.
As another poster mentioned, Raymond Carver is one of the GOAT short story writers. Easy to read but a lot of depth when you reread over and over. Insanely skilled.
If you want to read the 1800s realist stuff IMO Balzac is a good intro because there’s typically lots of action and he wrote some shorter books. But pick from his “best of” lists because he wrote a lot and some of it isn’t very good. Pere Goriot is great.

It’s basically the squat for your mind.
Sure you can get the information via other methods, but they’re usually lacking in one of the mental faculties. Similar to just doing leg press or smith machine squats. Will you get gains? Definitely. Will they be as efficient as squats (reading)? No.

But one thing books have over a lot of other media is the direct communication from the author to the reader. You can’t always see a film exactly the way the director intended (sound, picture etc isn’t going to quite be right). You might have to travel across the world to see an amazing painting for like 2 mins in a crowded gallery. But I can go down to a used bookstore and get one of the best novels ever written, in exactly the same form it was originally published, for like 6 bucks. Which is pretty sick.
