What's nuts is that jazz is just the New Orleans blues. All you really need to know to get started is to play the blues pentatonic scale. You can read sheet music, but you really don't have to. If you know the blues scale you can play rock, country, jazz, funk, and all that chit. Back in the day people just learned the songs by ear.

I say just go for it, you can even rent a trumpet monthly for pretty damn cheap like any other classical instrument. The blues is a folk style so it's not hard to learn, but it takes a lot of practice to make it sound really good. I've been performing and busking for years but everything is locked down now.

I have severe ADHD. I haven't mastered anything to date, and it really annoys me.

Consistentdeliberate practice, focus and corrective feedback seem to be the keys to reaching an advanced level in any pursuit/skill.

I'm back to learning a language.

Sewing. I’m pretty sure it’s a lost art these days lol, tho I wouldn’t say I’m a master of my craft. I’m always learning new techniques. I’ve been sewing since I was a little girl. My grandmother was a professional seamstress and taught me everything I know. I make all kinds of things. I’ve made curtains, toddler bedding, clothing, elaborate costumes.

Let's see - mastery - electric bass, Irish tenor banjo, Irish bouzouki/octave mandolin, woodworking (furniture and cabinet making). Not quite mastery but at an intermediate to advanced level - wood turning, Irish fiddle, guitar (various styles), custom rod building, custom tackle making, fly tying, fishing, leather/kydex tooling for knives and things, knife making (not forging), cooking skills (aka the basics and good knife work), Italian and Italian American cuisine, TexMex, Thai (wife is Thai, I've been learning), bread making. Other current and former pursuits; jazz broadcasting (I was a music director, jazz critic, as well as player/engineer for many years), Russian Literature and Poetry, Russian, Thai, Lao, recording engineer, photographer.

How and why did you achieve mastery level in all of these things? Is it more of just a matter of never watching TV or movies ever?

Quilting and embroidery but I kind of go back and forth between fun patterns and things that might challenge me more.

For crafts I'd say I'm truly honing, I've studied Balanchine technique since I was a kid and still take weekly classes, even on Zoom. Ballet is cool and all but if I want to move sharp and fast it's Balanchine or nothing. It's so musical, I just love it. I'm also really into Taylor technique but have let that slip in the last few years.

I tend to be able to pick up certain skills to a decent level really fast but I'm sort of a jack of all trades because if I don't have laser focus on something I tend to lose interest in it.

Some of the skills I DO enjoy and bring me pleasure:

- Martial Arts / Combatives / Self Defense
The past few years I've been focusing on improving my training in firearms but prior I've done Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling and have competed in kickboxing and MMA but there are people that are waaaay better than me.

- Cooking
I love trying different things out and trying different variations. Cooking to me is a labor of love. My family is Southern and I want to maintain those recipes in the family, but I also want to improve on some of my Mom, Grandma, and Aunt's recipes. I'm not afraid of using different devices to cook with.

- Deductive Reasoning
Sort of a side effect of being into science and working in technology. It's really just being autodidactic and knowing how to ask the right questions.


A skill I'd like to improve are my writing and communication skills. Depending on your audience you have to change your language no matter your communication medium. Also debate and rhetoric. It is sort of a lost art these days where nuanced discussions is nearly non-existent but I believe it is an important skill.

Trumpet- played Jazz for several years. Started in 5th grade and stopped playing at about 30 years old. Ill get it out from time to time and just play a song or two for the kids these days

Photography-specialize in macro photography but enjoy wildlife and ranch/rodeo when I have the chance. Currently doing some ranch shots for a client. Won some prize money from some competitions too.

Farming/ranching is my new part time and will be learning a new trade soon (former medic). Toss up between welding and electrical

Singing (have been a vocalist for ten years in various bands).

Cooking is something I really enjoy. Not probably chef level but I can make excellent food.

Writing (published author many times over and make about $10k a year with my books)

Poker (competed at a fairly high level but had to quit because of addiction)
