Does anyone else miss the days when fitness/lifting was an underground subculture?

All these new and upcoming powerlifters who try to be like pete rubish with the yelling and freaking out when they hit a PR. Makes me want to punch them in the face.

Yep
I remember back in 2008 I used to work out everyday and people told me I was crazy and that I should stop juicing lol.
Crazy how the times have changed but it’s good that people are becoming healthy

I miss lifting pre-social media.
When I started lifting in 2008 or so, it felt like a pursuit for improvement as an individual - not as a means to get attention or monetize your personal brand online. I was totally bought into the journey and how it differentiated me from my friends at the time. I felt like I was doing something special which required discipline, which isn’t something I saw a lot of in others growing up where I did.
Looking back, I miss the feeling of innocence lifting had years and years ago. I still think it’s more fun to log a workout in a small notebook than post about it online.

What has changed the most is the prevalence of super juice. Everyone seems to be on something, with the obvious change in physique. There were people on it back in the late 90s (when I first started lifting), but it just seems to be everywhere now. Even bush rugby players playing 2nd grade are on it.

yeah, it was this way when i first started out back in early high school. football team didnt even take lifting srs, i had a reputation for just being the asian guy at school that lifted a chit ton of weights. 4-5 years later and now everybody is on tiktok trying to take SARMS and look big
i don't mind it though. i always look more aesthetic in the end.

While I agree the social media fitness trend and ubiquity of cell-tech has changed standards pretty drastically, I feel like there's either some strong body dysmorphia or trolling going on ITT. I mean needing to be well over 200 lbs shredded as the minimum...srs?

Cringe youtubers are the worst. Every other idiot at the gym tells me they follow some youtube who is selling them 'programs' and somehow none of them look like they lift
I miss the days when people just put their heads down, lifted, and went home. No Youtube, no cringe 'programs' and no vegan proteins discount codes

Not sure how to feel about it. But I guess I do miss it.
Everyone's a ****ing expert now. But almost none of them look like they even work out, so at the end of the day I'll mog 80-90% of the people I come across in the general public at 6'3"/205lbs lean.
What I dislike the most about it is that EVERYONE wants to talk about lifting at work or where ever. And most of the time I just don't give too much of a **** about their diet or routine lol.

I really don't feel like it's changed too much. Maybe the clothing has, it's become easier to advertise on social media, so instead of 1-2 local companies and then the Nike/UA clothes, there's all these gym fashion stuff... but social media in general has just taken off, and obviously we're all into fitness so that's what we see the most of. It's not JUST fitness that has been infected by social media.
Really the vibe at my local gyms is the same. Sure there's a YouTube idiot there or two, but that was there 5 years ago, and before that it was still people recording their workouts, they just didn't have as big of an audience. Most guys still wear the basic chit and stick to their own workouts.
More people probably work out now, but that's a good thing. There's still the niche culture of actual lifters, but you're not looked at like a freak bodybuilder just because you go to the gym regularly, and it's pretty much a must for a chick to squat and DL now whereas before it was mostly cardio bunnies with pancakes.

I'd stretch it a bit to 2012. But back when if you wanted to know how to lift you had to get multiple magazines of Men's Fitness, Men's health just to get the ball rolling knowledge wise, with the occasional videos of youtube of people that knew what they were talking about.
Nowadays, EVERYONE damn near trying to push ads to sell you basic information that you can find on a forum, that you can search on google('dOeS cArdIo bUrn fAt?" "aRe aLl cArBs bAd?") It used to be looked down upon if you were juicing because you using a shortcut, that the second you off of it you back to normal. Now It's either they're clearly not natty out the gate, but they still preach like they are
Or we easily find out that people that have sick physiques only talk about their usage if they get caught. and IG is another fcuking realm of bullchit, where the pretty bitch that lifts 10lbs with a bang energy gets more views and influence than tha 6/10 doing cleans with good form
compared to the US as a whole, the chit is still underground, but a lotta clowns in teh show

If millenials are in such amazing shape, then how come 44% of you have some kind of pre-existing condition?
44% of older millennials already have a chronic health condition. Here’s what that means for their futures.

This myth you're telling of them all being jacked and shredded is a lie.
