It's trash.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

The entire Kids See Ghosts album is really good. Kid Cudi and Kanye should make another album.

Some of the new school rappers I dig are J. Cole, Joyner Lucas, Travis Scott, 21 Savage.

Rap promotes negative stereotypes of black people, but what is ironic is black fans of rap music will complain about being negatively stereotyped.

Imagine being sat in a car as a black man, and you are beaming out music from a black man talking about murdering people, and then white couple walk past your car and look visibly scared of you... You would completely lack self-awareness to be annoyed by them considering you a potential threat.

The biggest issues amongst black demographics are single motherhood, violent career criminality, not valuing education, promiscuity, and drug abuse. Rap promotes violent career criminality, promiscuity, being 'hood' as the best thing a black person can be, and drug abuse.

Rap is poison. What's sad is some black people will assume I'm white, or 'not a real black person' because I don't support rap, as if rap music is the pinnacle of black representation. If what it means to be black is to be a violent career criminal, promiscuous, speak a 4th grade level, a drug dealer, and a drug addict then everything racists say about black people is true, according to you.

Neo Soul, RNB, Jazz, Afro Beat, Funk, and Reggae are all better music representations for black people than rap.

Rap is poison.

I understand and I do agree with you with some points. Hip-hop was once about social commentary and uplifting one another. Think Grandmaster Flash, Public Enemy, Early 2Pac.

Gangsta Rap became the more dominant and consumable form for the industry hence why it was pushed more in the mainstream than other genres. I do get what you're saying about the negative imagery in rap though and I do think certain forms of it were pushed and resulted in negative consequences.

For me though I see a different perspective. You have a group of people that have been a historically disenfranchised, underclass, telling their story in an unapologetic fashion. I know it's not for everyone and I like it like that.

Growing up I was really into East Coast Hip Hop due to the lyrics, clever wordplay, and imagery these artists illustrated in their 20s and sometimes in their late teens. I was a huge fan of Nas, Mobb, Deep, and Wu-Tang.

The older I get though I tend to listen to far less of the gangsta style stuff and listen to a person guiding us through their personal growth and journey. I dig Kid Cudi, Old Kanye, etc. I mentioned Joyner Lucas, J Cole, Travis Scott.

It's interesting to see that our government has recognized hip-hop as a form of music that is so integral to America that many hip-hop albums have been inducted into the Library of Congress. A few that have been inducted:

- Nas "Illmatic"
- Jay-Z "The Blueprint"
- Lauryn Hill' "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill"
- Public Enemy "Fear of a Black Planet"
- De La Soul "3 Feet High and Rising"

Side Note: You probably know that Nas' father Olu Daru was a jazz musician and Prodigy of Mobb Deep his grandfather Budd Johnson was a saxophonist and his grand-uncle, Keg Johnson, was a trombonist. A lot of production during that time had jazz elements in it.

I think if you're going to blame rap/hip-hop for social problems, then that's just the tip of the iceberg regarding modern culture.

What about films, movies, and TV? Video games? Porn?

Does Grand Theft Auto encourage violence? What about the Fast and Furious movies? Do they encourage street racing? Did Heat inspire the North Hollywood shootout?

Maybe John Doe from Se7en was right about postmodern society.

But why single out Rap and hip-hop? Seems racial to me.

People LOVE Martin Scorcese films and revere them even though movies like The Departed, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, etc are ridden with violence, racism, misogyny, Irish and Italian stereotypes, etc. yet he never gets any blowback in the media for promoting violence.

I do think prolonged exposure can be bad though. I get that.

6% commit 60%+ of violent crime & you're going to sit their with your head up your ass & pretend it's not a cultural problem of that one demographic

Pretty coincidental that statistic started rising almost to the year that rap became mainstream in the late 80's

You can play mental gymnastics all day long but decades of history clearly shows that hip-hop culture has led to the increase in violence in North America

The optics are different. Scorsese films come after the the height of the mob's power. RICO laws went a long way in dismantling most of their power and forcing them further underground. The profile of the modern mobster is nowhere near as popular and glamorized as it once was.

The epidemic of drugs and violent crime in black communities is current and ongoing. A lot of what is being glamorized is happening today and is widespread. I moved from Detroit to the Sacramento area and can find the same kind of brother on the same kind of street corners. I have family in Youngstown Ohio, Chicago, parts of Texas and Florida and I can find them all their too. Same slang, same attire, same motivations and ambitions.

500 black bodies passed through Chicago morgues in 2020. How many mob hits were there? I don't think anyone knows and I don't think people watching Scorcese films go on to emulate mob-life in the same ways that rap music popularized a lifestyle.

The art form in itself is fine. The industry that has risen up behind it is not.

[Verse 1: Kanye West]
How we stop the Black Panthers?
Ronald Reagan cooked up an answer
You hear that? What Gil Scott was hearin'
When our heroes or heroines got hooked on heroin
Crack raised the murder rate in D.C. and Maryland
We invested in that, it's like we got Merrill lynched
And we been hangin' from the same tree ever since
Sometimes I feel the music is the only medicine
So we, cook it, cut it, measure it, bag it
Sell it, the fiends cop it, nowadays they can't tell if
That's that good ****, we ain't sure man
Put the CD on your tongue—yeah, that's pure, man

The epidemic of drugs and violent crime in black communities is current and ongoing. A lot of what is being glamorized is happening today and is widespread. I moved from Detroit to the Sacramento area and can find the some kind of brother on the same kind of street corners.

I will also note that a lot of rappers did change their style when watching Scarface and Italian Mob flicks. Nas went from being more socially conscious lyrics on Illmatic to Mafioso rap on It Was Written.

I understand the influence and on an impressionable young adult the wrong influence can set them astray. As we have talked about this before it is certainly incumbent on the parents to know what their children are listening to. My first CD was Jay-Z Vol 2 Hard Knock Life. Songs like "Money, Cash, Hoes" was on it but I think I knew it was entertainment considering I lived a cushy suburban life.
Whereas someone like my cousin would want my aunt to buy a polo for him because he heard Young Jeezy rap about it but his family lifestyle was checkered.

I know Chicago violence is increasing and there are a lot of young rappers getting killed over senseless violence. Pop Smoke, Nipsey Hussle, etc. That's one thing I hate about the rap industry though and I wish it would change.

Exactly. Just like it’s always low IQ blacks eating up something that’s not even music these days. Fair trade I guess

It took a while for Cole to reach his prime. I know he isn't "new" NEW but he's in the same generation as the other rappers I mentioned.

I'd argue Pusha T is representative of new rap also even though I was rocking with The Clipse in the early 2000s.
