So, I wonder, these measurements of them burning calories, is that during the actual games? Since the brain does take lots of energy, or is it just during the several days of tournaments? Because then those days would include lots of actual exercise...

I would only push back a bit on that some miscers are 2300 rated chess players, while those professors know dick all about the game.

yeah I have a hard time believing this. people that play video games would burn just as many, if not more calories by this measure. heart rate != calories burned.

Yeah tournaments can be brutal over several days when you play for 3-4 hours a match a day. I think my longest match lasted 5 hours, I was tired af

Anyone know how long gm classical matches actually last?

From what i know the time control is 90min/30min with a 30 sec increment. I dont think most of these games go past 80 moves so i dont see how they can go 6+ hours like people itt are claiming.

When i played in tourneys in high school and uni we have 60 mins on the clock no increments. I dont remember the games being anymore mentally/physically gruelling than taking an exam (in fact id say much less so).

Depends which format you play, classical for example is much more “intensive” because you actually have to calculate. Blitz, which is short time control, is played more by feel and what move you instinctively think is the best, so not much calculation involved.

Either way, im not buying this claim at all. In a 60 move game, these guys maybe have to really think hard about 10-15 moves AT MOST.

Got a source? Cus that makes no sense to me... how can an 80 move match which has a time control of 90min for the first 40 moves and 30 mins for the rest of the game with increments of 30 seconds amount to 6 hours???

Average game these days is an hour per game each player, sometimes slightly longer, and sometimes slightly shorter, depends on the tournament.

back in the day it was MUCH longer, but today that’s too boring and too expensive, so time controls are getting shorter and shorter.

Robert Sapolsky is one of the greatest intellectual minds of our time.

I watched his full lecture series online for Free. This kind of information is invaluable/gold. Can’t get enough of his vids.

I don’t think the kind of personality and traits needed to excel at chess would align with traits shared by fat people

Eh, you would think that sitting at a table playing a board game would fit in quite well with a fat, sedentary dude. Theres plenty of fatties who won the World Series of Poker. But then again there’s a much higher implementation of luck in poker than there is in chess.

Bobby Fischer is my favorite chess player. He did it all by him fukking self. No team of Chess coaches like the Soviets had. Just him.....alone in a room practicing against himself, reading books, and working out.

Im merely talking about the high levels of Intelligence, patience, discipline, foresight etc needed to excel at chess. I don’t think those are fat people traits tbh
